A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Novo Nordisk's GLP-1 range centres on semaglutide (Wegovy, Wegovy tablets, Ozempic) plus liraglutide (Saxenda).
  • Mounjaro is made by Eli Lilly, not Novo Nordisk, and works on two gut-hormone receptors rather than one.
  • Wegovy steps up after at least four weeks and reaches its 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.
  • Saxenda is a daily injection; Wegovy and Mounjaro are once weekly.
  • Which medicine suits you is a prescriber's decision, based on your health history, not on brand.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

What GLP-1 drugs does Novo Nordisk make?

Novo Nordisk makes two active ingredients in this class: semaglutide and liraglutide. Semaglutide is sold as Wegovy, Ozempic and Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide). Liraglutide is sold as Saxenda, a daily injection. Our guide to Novo Nordisk GLP-1 products goes through each one.

02 · Your decision

Which Novo Nordisk medicine is relevant to you?

For weight management, the relevant Novo Nordisk options are Wegovy and Wegovy tablets. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes: it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss. Novo Nordisk is the company; Ozempic is one of its brands.

If you want to compare Wegovy with Lilly's alternative, start with our page on Novo Nordisk and Mounjaro. When you are ready, the Mounjaro pen and Wegovy pen pages show live prices, and our weight loss clinic explains the consultation.

03 · Wegovy in practice

How Wegovy is taken

Wegovy pens come as 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg, taken once weekly. Titration steps up after at least four weeks and reaches the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17. The 2.4mg dose is the licensed maintenance dose for weight management.18

Your first order of the starting pen is from £99.99. Read how to buy genuine Wegovy in the UK or the 0.25mg starting dose page, and check buying Wegovy online. Our guide to Wegovy fridge storage covers handling.

04 · How Mounjaro differs

How Mounjaro differs from Novo's medicines

Mounjaro differs because tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. That dual action distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 Individual results vary, and trial averages do not predict your own result.

05 · Nicknames and NHS access

"Poor man's Ozempic" and NHS access

"Poor man's Ozempic" is a marketing nickname for low-cost supplements such as berberine, not a medicine. Dramatic weight-loss claims made for them are not an established effect of the product, and they carry no clinical oversight.

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What GLP-1 does Novo Nordisk make?
Novo Nordisk makes semaglutide, sold as Wegovy, Wegovy tablets and Ozempic, and liraglutide, sold as Saxenda. Wegovy is a once-weekly pen, while Saxenda is a daily injection. Mounjaro is not among them: it is tirzepatide, made by Eli Lilly.
Is Novo Nordisk the same as Ozempic?
No. Novo Nordisk is the pharmaceutical company; Ozempic is one of its semaglutide brands. Wegovy is a different brand of semaglutide from the same company, with its own dose ladder. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes. It is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss.
What is known as the "poor man's Ozempic"?
It is a marketing nickname for low-cost supplements such as berberine. They are not licensed GLP-1 medicines, carry no clinical oversight, and dramatic weight-loss claims made for them are not an established effect of the product. If you want a GLP-1 treatment, a prescriber can assess you.
How much does a multi-month supply of Wegovy cost?
It depends on the dose, because Wegovy steps up after at least four weeks to the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17. Your first order of the starting pen is from £99.99. See the Wegovy pen page for current prices at each dose.
Which is safer, Wegovy or Mounjaro?
Both are licensed prescription medicines with their own side-effect profiles, and neither can be ranked as safer. Mounjaro acts on GIP and GLP-1 receptors, whereas semaglutide acts on GLP-1 alone. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your history to decide which suits you.
How long do you stay on Wegovy?
How long you stay on it is agreed with your prescriber through regular reviews, based on your response, tolerance and goals.
Why are people stopping Wegovy?
Reasons differ from person to person and can include side effects, cost or reaching a goal. If you are considering stopping or switching, speak to your prescriber first, and report any side effects through the Yellow Card scheme. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.
What is the cheapest way to get Wegovy?
Compare current prices for the same dose and check what the quoted price includes. Our first pen is from £99.99 on a first order, with the consultation free. Beware of any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.
