Why a video helps, and where it falls short

A video shows the physical handling of the pen far better than text does. You see how the pen is held, how the needle goes on and how the dose indicator behaves. That removes most first-dose anxiety.

A video cannot tell you whether the medicine is right for you, which dose you should be on or what to do about side effects. It can also go out of date if the device or leaflet is revised. • Checking the pen label for the right name and strength before use.
• Looking at the medicine to confirm it looks as the leaflet describes.
• Attaching a new needle correctly and removing the caps.
• Delivering the dose and knowing when the injection is complete.
• Removing the needle and putting it straight into a sharps bin.

05 · Storage and pen life

Storage: fridge, travel and the 30-day rule

Yes, you should refrigerate Mounjaro pens that you have not started. Store unopened pens in the fridge at 2–8°C until first use, and they keep until the printed expiry date.¹¹³

Once a pen is in use, the UK KwikPen is licensed for up to 30 days (not above 30°C) out of the fridge. After that, sterility and potency are no longer assured, so the pen should not be used even if medicine appears to remain. That is the reason for the 30 days limit: it is the window the product was tested for.¹

Taking your pen on a plane

You can fly with Mounjaro: carry pens in hand luggage (hold luggage can fall below freezing), ideally in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of your prescription. Read the storage section of the leaflet, then check with your airline and ask your pharmacy how to keep the pen within its labelled storage conditions.¹³

Practical points: keep the pen in its original packaging, carry your pharmacy label or prescription paperwork, and do not leave medicine somewhere exposed to extreme heat or cold. Plan how you will dispose of used needles safely at your destination.

07 · What to avoid

What to avoid while on Mounjaro

The leaflet is the full list of cautions, so read it rather than rely on a short summary.¹³ Two points come up often. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed, so ask your prescriber about contraception.⁷ The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.¹ If you use insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar, so tell your prescriber.

Never share a pen or a needle with anyone. If you notice a symptom you did not expect, discuss it with your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.¹⁹

How quickly Mounjaro starts working

Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. How soon this begins varies from person to person.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages, and individual results vary.² Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
