A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Watch the manufacturer's KwikPen video and read the patient information leaflet before your first injection; the pen's own instructions always take priority.
-
Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day.
-
Rotate the injection site with each dose; the stomach, front of the thigh, or back of the upper arm (if someone else injects).
-
Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every EverydayMeds order.
In this guide
01 · Start here
Which video should you watch?
Watch the video made for the KwikPen, the multi-dose pen used in the UK, rather than a clip made for another device or country. Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 Handling is the same pen design across strengths, but always check that the strength on the label matches what you were prescribed.
Be careful with videos that show vials, syringes or single-dose pens. Those are different products, and some clips found online were made for other markets. If a video differs from the leaflet in your box, follow the leaflet and ask the pharmacy that dispensed your pen. We also keep a plain-English walkthrough on our Mounjaro video guide and a longer text version in how to use the KwikPen.
02 · Your next step
What to do before you press play
Have your pen, the leaflet and your prescriber's dosing instructions in front of you, so you can pause the video and compare. Choose your injection day first, because the weekly rhythm matters more than the time of day. There is no "best" time of day: Mounjaro works the same morning or evening, with or without food, and what matters is the same day each week.1
| What the video shows | What to check against the leaflet |
|---|---|
| Preparing and checking the pen | Strength on the label matches your prescription; the leaflet's own checks before use |
| Setting the dose | The number in the dose window shows your dose |
| Choosing a site | Stomach, front of thigh, or back of upper arm if someone else injects; rotate each week |
| Injecting | Follow the pen's instructions; do not improvise the steps |
| Afterwards | Safe disposal in a sharps bin; pen storage |
If you have not yet started treatment and are weighing up where to begin, our weight loss clinic explains the process, and the Mounjaro pen page shows current prices and the free consultation.
03 · Setting the dose
How the dose window works
The Mounjaro KwikPen is set by turning the dose knob until the dose indicator shows the correct dose in the window. This is the part of the video worth watching twice, because people used to other injectables often listen for clicks out of habit.
The dose you set is the dose your prescriber chose. Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week, and the starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself.1 If you are on your first pen, our guide to injecting the 2.5mg starting dose covers what to expect. When your prescriber moves you up, the 5mg injection guide is the natural next read.
04 · Where to inject
Choosing and rotating injection sites
Mounjaro is injected under the skin (subcutaneously), and a video will show you the three licensed areas. Licensed injection sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection.1
Rotate the site with each dose.1 A simple habit is to alternate between the left and right side of your stomach, then move to a thigh. Some people note the site in a diary or in the GLPTrackr companion app, our free tracking app for iOS and Android, so they never have to remember which side they used last.
The back of the upper arm is hard to reach yourself. Only use it when a partner, relative or carer is injecting, and ask them to watch the video too, so they are following the same steps you are.
05 · Timing and missed doses
Timing, missed doses and changing your day
Pick a day and time you will remember. Many people choose a weekend morning so early side effects fall on days off, and then stick to it.1 A repeating phone reminder helps more than any video.
If you forget, the rule is clear. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day — never take two doses within 3 days of each other.1
You can also move your injection day. You can change your weekly injection day if needed, as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.1 If you are unsure whether you are inside the window, ask your prescriber before injecting rather than guessing.
06 · Storing your pen
Storing the pen before and after use
Storage is usually covered at the end of a video, and it is worth getting right. Keep Mounjaro pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them.13 Never use a pen that has been frozen.
Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days — useful for short trips — after which it should be discarded.13 Keep the pen cap on to protect it from light.
For unopened pens, keep them in the fridge until first use; they keep until the expiry date printed on the box. If an unopened pen has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before using it rather than relying on a remembered day limit.
Our orders arrive in temperature-controlled packaging by free next-day tracked delivery, so unpack the pen promptly and put it in the fridge as the leaflet describes.
07 · Travelling with pens
Injecting when you are away from home
You can fly with Mounjaro. Carry pens in hand luggage (hold luggage can fall below freezing), ideally in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of your prescription.13 In-use pens tolerate up to 30 days not above 30°C, so most holidays need no special arrangements; for hot climates use an insulated pouch.
Check destination rules for travelling with prescription injectables before you fly. Pack your sharps bin or a travel-safe disposal plan too, because the injection day does not pause for a holiday. If you cross time zones, keep the same injection day and ask your prescriber if you are unsure.
08 · What to expect afterwards
What to expect after the injection
Videos rarely cover the days after. The 2.5mg starting weeks are about adjustment, and experiences differ widely: some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one, others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal.1 Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.
Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. Think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend rather than individual weigh-ins. Trials measured results at 72 weeks.2 In SURMOUNT-1, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages and individual results vary.2
If something new worries you after an injection, speak to your prescriber. If you have severe, persistent stomach pain, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing, get medical help straight away. You can also report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19
09 · Beyond Mounjaro
Other weight loss injections and further reading
Other injectable weight loss medicines use different pens, doses and schedules, so a Mounjaro video does not transfer. Liraglutide, for example, is a daily injection supplied at 6mg per millilitre, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro. Wegovy has its own ladder of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg. Our overview of how to administer weight loss injections compares the general principles, and how to take Mounjaro on video and the main Mounjaro injection guide go deeper on this medicine.

10 · How we support you
Support from EverydayMeds
EverydayMeds is a GPhC-registered UK online pharmacy (GPhC 9012878). Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every order, so you are not left piecing instructions together. Your consultation is free and is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and ongoing monthly reviews are included. Our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, account portal chat, or phone on 0333 207 0413.
Mounjaro comes from official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. Your first order is £40 less with code FIRST40, and every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25). Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
11 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes
Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.
Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day
A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
