A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Constipation is a recognised Mounjaro side effect because food moves through the gut more slowly and many people eat and drink less.
  • Start with regular water through the day, fibre from vegetables and whole grains, and daily movement.
  • If it persists, ask a pharmacist to recommend a suitable laxative rather than guessing.
  • Pain, bloating or more than a few days without a bowel movement means contacting your clinical team.
  • Viral 'tricks' and homemade laxatives have no support; stick to the basics.
In this guide

01 · Core answer

What to do first when Mounjaro makes you constipated

Begin with the three basics: fluids, fibre and movement. They cost almost nothing to try. They work best when started early, before things become uncomfortable.

StepWhat to doWhy it helps
Fluids firstDrink water regularly through the day rather than in one goMany people eat and drink less on Mounjaro, so stools can become harder to pass
FibreInclude vegetables and whole grains in your mealsAdds bulk to what is moving through a slower gut
Daily movementKeep up gentle activity every day, such as walkingSupports normal bowel activity

02 · Your situation

Is this normal, or something to act on now?

Some constipation is expected. Constipation is very common on Mounjaro for weight management and may affect more than 1 in 10 people, because food moves through the gut more slowly and many people eat and drink less.1 If you are a few days into a new dose and things have slowed, that fits the usual pattern.

It is worth acting rather than waiting when you notice the first signs: harder stools, straining, or a clear change from your own normal. Early small changes beat late big ones. If symptoms come with pain, bloating or several days without a bowel movement, do not self-manage for long. Speak to your clinical team.13

If you are weighing up treatment and want to understand how the medicine and dosing work, our Mounjaro pen page explains the doses and consultation.

03 · Why it happens

Why Mounjaro causes constipation

Mounjaro slows the gut and often reduces how much you eat and drink. Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 The slower movement of food is a direct part of how the medicine works.

Eating less adds to the effect. Less food means less bulk, and less drinking means harder stools. Both together make constipation more likely than either alone.

That is why the fixes target the same two things: more fluid and fibre going in, and more movement to keep the gut active. It is also why relief often feels like steady maintenance rather than a single fix.

04 · Fluids, fibre, movement

Fluids, fibre and movement in practice

Fluids come first because they are the quickest thing to correct. Aim for regular water through the day.1 Sipping steadily is easier than forcing large amounts, especially when you feel full quickly. Keep a bottle in view, and tie drinks to routines such as meals, work breaks and walks.

Fibre comes from vegetables and whole grains.1 Because Mounjaro can reduce appetite, small portions of fibre-rich foods at each meal are more realistic than a large salad you cannot finish. Build it up gradually, as a sudden jump in fibre without enough fluid can leave you feeling more blocked, not less.

Eating habits that suit digestive side effects generally apply here too: eat smaller meals slowly, stop at the first feeling of fullness, and stay well hydrated.1 Favour plain lower-fat foods while you adjust, and avoid lying down straight after eating.

Movement does not need to be intense. Daily gentle activity, such as a walk after meals, fits the advice and also supports the activity that Mounjaro is meant to be used alongside.1

05 · Laxatives and pharmacists

Which laxative is suitable with Mounjaro?

No single laxative suits everyone. If constipation persists, a pharmacist can recommend a suitable laxative.1

Different laxatives work in different ways, and the right choice depends on your symptoms, other medicines you take and your general health. A pharmacist can ask about these in a couple of minutes, face to face or by phone, and tell you how to use the product properly.

When you speak to them, mention that you take Mounjaro, which dose you are on, when you last increased it, and how long you have been constipated. Also mention any other medicines. This lets them recommend something suitable and tell you what to watch for.

If you have a prescriber involved through your online consultation, tell them too. Our aftercare includes side-effect support and ongoing monthly reviews, so constipation is a reasonable thing to raise at any time, not only at a scheduled check-in.

Avoid taking laxatives routinely without advice, and avoid combining several products at once. If one is not working, go back to the pharmacist rather than adding another. For a fuller walk-through of options, see our page on treatment options for constipation.

06 · Quick tricks and myths

Quick tricks, homemade laxatives and 'nurse's cocktails'

Quick tricks are not a safe substitute for the basics. A fast trick, a homemade laxative that works immediately, a nurse's cocktail or a timed routine that promises to empty the bowels has no support.

Be cautious: Mounjaro slows how food moves through the gut. Harsh or improvised remedies can cause cramping and dehydration, and if you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.1 Something described as 'immediate' is not a gentle adjustment of a slowed gut.

The same goes for supplements marketed as natural alternatives. Low-cost supplements bought without any assessment have no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. They are not a substitute for the steps above or for advice from a pharmacist.

If you feel severely blocked, are in pain, or have gone several days without a bowel movement, do not experiment at home. Contact your clinical team or a pharmacist. If you think a product has caused an unexpected reaction, you can report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

07 · When to seek help

When constipation needs a clinician

Contact your clinical team for pain, bloating or more than a few days without a bowel movement.1

Some symptoms are more urgent. Get medical help straight away for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting, which could be pancreatitis.13 Pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes could signal gallbladder problems and also needs medical help straight away.13 Signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing, also need immediate medical help.

Constipation by itself is not usually an emergency, but get medical help straight away if it comes with severe, persistent stomach pain, with or without vomiting, or if you cannot keep fluids down. Do not wait it out.

Pain is also a reason not to reach for painkillers without checking first. Our page on pain relief and Mounjaro explains what to ask a pharmacist, and our guide to headache relief covers another common issue, since dehydration can contribute to both.

08 · Timing and dose changes

Timing: dose increases and how long it lasts

Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts.1 So if constipation appears after a step up, it may settle as you adapt.

Most side effects appear in the first days after starting or increasing a dose, peak early, and settle as your body adapts.

If a new dose is hard to tolerate, prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up. Speak to your clinical team rather than pushing through severe symptoms.1 Do not change your own dose or skip doses to manage bowel symptoms without talking to them.

A practical tip: before an increase, tighten your routine. Make sure fluids, fibre and walking are already in place, so you are not building habits while symptoms are at their peak.

09 · Constipation then diarrhoea

When constipation swings to diarrhoea

Constipation and diarrhoea are both very common digestive effects of Mounjaro, and some people notice one after the other.1 The gut is adjusting, and diet, fluids and any laxative you have used can all shape the pattern.

If you have used a laxative and then develop loose stools, stop and speak to a pharmacist before taking more. Diarrhoea, like vomiting, can lead to dehydration, so keep drinking. If you cannot keep fluids down, get medical help straight away.1

Our page on swings between constipation and loose stools goes into the pattern in more detail.

10 · Starting treatment

If you are thinking about starting Mounjaro

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Constipation is one of several digestive effects worth knowing about before you begin, not a reason to avoid treatment automatically. Many people manage it with the basics above. If you have a history of bowel problems, mention it in your consultation so the prescriber can take it into account.

Our consultation is free, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically. We supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, with free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. Our weight loss clinic page explains the wider service, and ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support are part of aftercare. We are GPhC-registered (9012878).

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Which laxative works best with Mounjaro?
There is no single best laxative, and the right one depends on your symptoms and other medicines. If constipation persists after fluids, fibre and daily movement, a pharmacist can recommend a suitable laxative. Tell them you take Mounjaro and which dose you are on, and ask how to use the product safely.
How often should I poop on Mounjaro?
Normal varies between people, so compare against your own usual pattern rather than a fixed target. Mounjaro slows how food moves through the gut, so some change is expected. Contact your clinical team for pain, bloating or more than a few days without a bowel movement.
What is the 7 second trick to relieve constipation?
The supported approach is regular water, fibre from vegetables and whole grains, and daily movement. A pharmacist can recommend a laxative if it persists.
What is a homemade laxative that works immediately?
Harsh approaches can cause cramping and dehydration on a medicine that already slows your gut. Use fluids, fibre and movement, then ask a pharmacist for a suitable laxative if constipation continues.
How to poop fast when severely constipated?
Severe constipation on Mounjaro needs advice, not improvisation. If you have pain, bloating or have gone more than a few days without a bowel movement, contact your clinical team. Get medical help straight away for severe, persistent stomach pain, especially with vomiting. Do not try aggressive home remedies.
Does Mounjaro constipation go away?
For most people, side effects ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts, and they are most likely when starting or moving up a dose. If it does not settle, a pharmacist can advise on a laxative, and your prescriber can consider holding your dose longer before stepping up.
Should I change my dose because of constipation?
Do not change or skip doses yourself. If a new dose is hard to tolerate, prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up. Speak to your clinical team, who can review your symptoms and decide the safest next step for you.
