A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Bone density loss is not a listed side effect in the Mounjaro SmPC or patient information leaflet.
  • Gradual weight loss, enough protein and regular activity are the practical steps that sit within the licence.
  • Tell your prescriber about any bone-health history, fractures or long-term steroid use before you start.
  • New symptoms can be reported through the Yellow Card scheme, and your prescriber can advise on any bone concern.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Does Mounjaro lower bone density? The honest short answer

Bone density loss is not listed as a side effect in the Mounjaro SmPC or patient information leaflet.113 That is a statement about the licensed product information, and it is not the same as saying the question is settled. Losing weight changes the body in several ways, and bone health is one of the areas clinicians keep an eye on during any weight-loss treatment, whether it involves medicine, surgery or diet alone.

If you want to read the wider discussion, our guides on whether Mounjaro affects bone health and GLP-1 medicines and bone density cover related angles.

Mounjaro is a once-weekly prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary. Whether it suits you, given your own bone health, is a decision for you and a prescriber, based on your history.

02 · Decision one

Is bone density relevant to me?

For many adults the practical answer is that it deserves a short conversation, not a lasting worry. It matters most if you already have a reason to think about your bones. Examples include a previous fracture from a minor fall, a diagnosis of osteoporosis or low bone density, a family history, long-term steroid use or early menopause.

If any of these apply, say so in your consultation. Our free online consultation is a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation, and it is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber rather than a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. That review exists precisely so that your history, including bone health, is weighed by a person before any pen is dispatched.

If none of these apply, you are in the situation most adults are in: no specific warning in the product information, and general advice that is sensible for anyone changing their weight.

03 · Decision two

What should I do next?

Work through these steps in order.

  • Disclose your bone history. Give your prescriber the full picture before you start, including medicines such as long-term steroids.
  • Keep the pace gradual. Mounjaro is designed to work gradually, with a slow dose ladder and a review of response, rather than as a crash approach.4
  • Protect protein and activity. Those are the two habits the licensed guidance on plateaus points to, and they are also the ordinary foundations of bone and muscle care.
  • Ask about your own risk. If you are worried, ask your GP whether a bone assessment is appropriate for you.
  • Report new symptoms. Tell your prescriber about anything new and consider reporting it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

Once you have decided that treatment is right for you, you can see current doses and prices on the Mounjaro pen product page. You can also browse our wider weight loss clinic information first.

04 · Product information

What the Mounjaro product information says about bone

The SmPC and patient information leaflet do not list bone density loss as a side effect of Mounjaro.113 These two documents are the authoritative description of what a licensed medicine is known to cause. The SmPC is written for prescribers and the leaflet for patients, and both are kept in the electronic medicines compendium.

It helps to be precise about what that absence means. It means bone density loss is not listed as a side effect in the UK patient leaflet recorded in the licensed information. It does not mean that nobody has ever asked the question, and it does not mean your own bones are certain to behave in any particular way.

The same approach applies to any symptom that the leaflet does not mention. It is not listed as a side effect in the UK patient leaflet, so the right response is not to dismiss it or to assume it is caused by treatment. It is to discuss it with your prescriber, who can consider other explanations, including the ordinary effects of changing diet, activity or weight.

What the leaflet does tell you

The leaflet and SmPC describe the licensed use, the dose ladder across the six strengths of 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg, and the effects people should watch for. Reading them in full before you start is good practice for any prescription medicine. Our support team can point you to them, and your prescriber can talk through anything you do not follow.

Reporting something new

If you notice a new symptom that the leaflet does not describe, you can report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Reports from patients and clinicians are how regulators spot patterns over time. You do not need to be certain that the medicine caused the symptom to report it, and reporting does not replace speaking to your prescriber. Do both. Our related guide on bone-related side effects expands on how to tell the different possibilities apart.

If you are weighing treatment and bone health is one of several worries, write down your questions before the consultation. A short list of concerns, such as previous fractures, medicines you take and family history, makes the review faster and more useful. You will not be judged for asking, and the consultation is free.

05 · Why people ask

Why people ask whether weight loss affects bones

People ask because bone is living tissue that responds to the body it supports, and any treatment that changes body weight naturally prompts the question. The question is not unique to Mounjaro. It is raised about weight loss from diet, surgery and other medicines too, which is why our guides on weight loss injections and bone density and weight loss drugs and bone density take the broader view.

What Mounjaro does

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve how the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. That is the described mechanism. Bone is not named as a target of it.

What pace to expect

Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase, and most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days. A gradual pace is one reason prescribers review response regularly and step doses up slowly rather than rushing.4

Why online answers conflict

Short videos and blog posts often blend three separate things: what a trial measured, what a researcher suspects, and what an influencer experienced. Only the first is evidence for a specific claim, and even then only for the population studied. When you meet a confident number about bone loss on a GLP-1 medicine, ask three questions. Which study produced it? Which medicine and dose were involved? Who was in the group? If the page cannot answer, treat the number as unreliable.

If you are asking because you are already on another medicine that is known to matter for bones, mention it to your prescriber. They can weigh the whole picture in a way a general web page cannot.

06 · What trials measured

What the main trial measured

The headline Mounjaro weight-loss trial, SURMOUNT-1, measured weight loss in 2,539 adults over 72 weeks.2 That matters because many pages quote a trial result as though it answered every question about a medicine. A trial answers the questions it was designed to ask.

In SURMOUNT-1, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost substantially more weight on average than people making lifestyle changes alone, with results measured over 72 weeks and varying with dose. These are trial averages, individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

Other things trials reported

Trial participants also saw average improvements in waist size, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar measures, and most participants with prediabetes returned to normal blood-sugar levels.2 These are secondary outcomes, not promises. They show why prescribers describe weight management as health management. Bone health is a part of overall health, and it is reasonable to want it considered alongside the rest.

What to take from this

You can still act sensibly: choose treatment with a prescriber who knows your history, keep the pace gradual, look after protein intake and activity, and report anything new. Our summary guide on whether bone density issues are linked to Mounjaro follows the same cautious line.

One last point on trials. Participants in trials are monitored closely and are not a perfect picture of every person who later takes a medicine. That is another reason to talk to a clinician about your own situation rather than rely on an average.

07 · Protecting your body

Looking after muscle and bone while losing weight

The most practical protection is to treat Mounjaro as one part of a plan that also includes food quality, protein and physical activity. That is also how it is licensed: alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.1

When weight loss stalls, the licensed guidance on responses includes protecting protein and activity.4 We apply that sensible thinking more broadly. Eating enough protein across the day and staying physically active are ordinary good habits for anyone, and they are especially worth keeping when appetite is smaller than usual.

Eating when your appetite is smaller

Because most people feel fuller sooner on Mounjaro, meals can shrink without any effort. That is the intended effect, but it can mean important foods get squeezed out. Plan meals around protein and varied foods first, then fill in the rest. What suits you depends on your own diet and any conditions. A pharmacist or dietitian can help if you have restrictions.

Movement

Regular moderate activity, such as brisk walking, plus resistance work for muscle, is the pattern usually recommended alongside treatment. If you have not exercised for a long time, check with your GP before starting something demanding.

Supplements

You may wonder whether to take calcium or vitamin D. Whether you need a supplement depends on your diet, your sun exposure and your health. Ask your pharmacist or GP what suits you, particularly if you take other medicines.

Pace matters

Do not try to speed things up by doubling doses or adding unlicensed products. A plateau is not a reason to do either.4 A steadier loss with good habits is more likely to feel manageable and sustainable, and it leaves your prescriber more room to adjust if something changes. Our ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and follow-up assessments exist for that reason: someone is looking at how you are doing, not only at what you weigh.

08 · Plateaus and pace

Plateaus, dose steps and the pace of treatment

Weight loss on Mounjaro is not linear, and plateaus of a few weeks are normal and expected as the body adapts to a lower weight.

Within the licence, the responses to a plateau are to review food intake honestly, since portions drift back up, protect protein and activity, check the basics such as sleep and alcohol, and discuss with your prescriber whether a dose step-up is appropriate if you are not yet at maximum.4 A plateau is not a reason to double doses or add unlicensed products.

Early weeks

The 2.5mg starting weeks are about adjustment. Some people notice appetite change and early loss in the first week, while others feel little until a higher dose. Both are normal. Early loss includes water weight, so the trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.

Reviews of your response

Treatment response is reviewed by your prescriber. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you. That review is also a natural moment to raise anything about your general health, including bone concerns.

What stopping looks like

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 If you stop because of a worry, speak to your prescriber first where you can, so that the plan for food, activity and follow-up is considered rather than abrupt.

Why a slower pace is not a failure

Slower early progress does not predict failure. The dose you respond to may still be ahead of you, and the trial averages people quote were measured over a long period. If you want to understand more about the pace, our guide on how Mounjaro may affect bones sits alongside the results guides on this site.

If you notice aching in your bones or joints during treatment, that is a separate symptom to discuss; see our page on bone pain on Mounjaro for how to approach it.

09 · Who should be cautious

Who should raise bone health before starting

Anyone with an existing bone concern should say so before starting, and the consultation is built to capture it. Whether treatment is suitable is a clinical decision for the prescriber, based on your full history.113 You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems.

It is still useful to know which parts of your history to mention. Think about the following and write down anything that applies.

  • A fracture from a minor fall or knock.
  • A diagnosis of osteoporosis or low bone density, now or in the past.
  • Medicines taken for bones, or medicines taken long term that may matter for bones, such as steroids.
  • Early menopause, or a history of missed periods over a long time.
  • A family history of bone problems.
  • Conditions affecting digestion or absorption of food.
  • A history of eating difficulties, since that is relevant to any weight treatment.

Why disclosure helps

A prescriber who knows these things can decide whether treatment is suitable, whether a different plan is better, or whether you should speak to your GP first. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. You lose nothing by being open.

Other medicines

Tell the prescriber about everything you take, including supplements. Because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, it can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly when you start treatment or increase the dose. For example, doses of insulin or sulfonylureas may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. Bring the whole list, not just the ones you think are relevant.

Age and life stage

Your life stage changes the questions a prescriber may ask. If you are older, past the menopause, or have had a long period of low activity, you may simply want to ask your GP about your own bone health in general, whatever you decide about treatment.

What the licence requires

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary, and this page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

10 · NHS and private

NHS and private access, and where bone questions fit

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

Bone questions do not change by route. Whether your prescription comes through your GP, a specialist service or a private pharmacy, the product information is the same, and the right answer to a bone concern is a conversation with a clinician who has your history.

What private treatment with us involves

Our process runs in four steps. First, a free online consultation, which is a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Second, review by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Third, dispensing by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm. Fourth, free next-day tracked delivery in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99. The price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees.

Supply and aftercare

We supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, sourced directly from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. Ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and follow-up assessments are carried out by the prescribing team, with side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping. That matters for questions like this one, because your circumstances can change between orders, and you can raise a new concern at the next review.

If you are waiting for the NHS

Ask your GP about your place in the rollout, and look after your general bone and muscle health in the meantime. If you are deciding between waiting and paying privately, bone health is one factor among many, and a prescriber can help you weigh it. Support is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat or by phone on 0333 207 0413.

11 · Reporting and next steps

Reporting symptoms and what to do next

If you notice a new symptom on Mounjaro, tell your prescriber and consider reporting it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 That applies to bone and joint symptoms as much as to any other. You do not need proof that the medicine is responsible. Reports help the regulator see patterns that no single clinic could.

When to speak to someone promptly

Get medical help straight away if you have a fracture or sudden or severe pain; for pain after a minor knock or a notable change in how you move, contact a clinician. These are not things to wait out or to explain away with a web page. For non-urgent concerns, your GP or our prescribing team can advise on the next step.

Keeping a simple record

Keep a short note of when symptoms started, which dose you were on, what else changed and anything that makes it better or worse. A clear record from you is far more useful to a prescriber than a general impression, and it helps rule out other explanations.

Counterfeits and where you buy

Buying Mounjaro from an unregulated seller carries real risks, including counterfeit products. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts.7 Anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription should be avoided. Our registration is GPhC 9012878, and you can check it on the GPhC register.

Choosing your next step

If you are already on treatment and worried, speak to your prescriber at your next review, or sooner if something is new. If you are comparing options, our weight loss clinic page gives the wider picture. Whichever you choose, the principle is the same: honest information, a gradual pace, and a clinician who knows your history.

12 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Does Mounjaro decrease bone density?
Bone density loss is not listed as a side effect in the Mounjaro SmPC or patient information leaflet. That is not the same as saying the question is closed, because changing your weight can affect the body in many ways. If you have bone concerns, tell your prescriber before starting, and raise any new symptom at your reviews.
Can Mounjaro cause bone density issues?
It is not listed as a side effect in the UK patient leaflet, and it is not named among the side effects in the licensed product information. If you already have a bone condition or risk factors, such as a previous fracture from a minor fall, long-term steroid use or early menopause, mention them in your consultation so the prescriber can consider them. Report any new symptom through the Yellow Card scheme and discuss it with your prescriber.
Can you regain bone density after weight loss?
Bone health is individual and depends on age, diet, activity, hormones and medical history. If you are worried about your own bones, ask your GP whether an assessment is sensible for you and what a realistic plan would involve, including nutrition and exercise advice.
Does Mounjaro deteriorate your muscles?
Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, so protecting muscle matters: aim to include a protein source at every meal, and do resistance exercise two or more times a week. If you notice unusual weakness or loss of strength, tell your prescriber so it can be looked into properly.
Is low bone density reversible?
That is a question for a clinician who knows your history, because the answer depends on the cause, your age and your wider health. If you have been told you have low bone density, ask your GP what treatment, nutrition and activity plan is right for you, and tell any prescriber before starting weight-loss treatment.
What is the quickest way to increase bone density?
There is no quick fix, and it is wise to be wary of any claim that promises one. Bone health is built through steady habits such as varied nutrition, enough protein, regular weight-bearing activity and, where needed, treatment that a clinician prescribes. If you are concerned, speak to your GP, who can check whether you need an assessment, and ask a pharmacist about supplements.
What is the number one vitamin to rebuild bone density?
Whether you need any supplement depends on your diet, your sun exposure, your health and the medicines you take. A pharmacist or GP can advise you individually, and low-cost supplements are easy to buy without any assessment, so a quick conversation first is wise.
What are the three worst bone density drugs?
If you take any long-term medicine and worry about your bones, ask your GP or pharmacist whether it is relevant to bone health. Always mention every medicine you take when you have a consultation for weight-loss treatment.
What drink helps with bone density?
Overall nutrition matters more than any single drink, and the right choices depend on your diet, any allergies or intolerances, and your health. If appetite is smaller on treatment, plan meals around protein and varied foods first, and ask a pharmacist, dietitian or GP for tailored advice.
