A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Mounjaro's licensed use is weight management and type 2 diabetes, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
-
The SmPC and patient leaflet are the reference documents for listed side effects. Tell your prescriber about your bone history before you start.
-
New symptoms, including bone pain or a fracture, should be raised with your prescriber and can be reported through Yellow Card.
-
Mounjaro is a medicine you take alongside lifestyle changes, not instead of them, and monthly reviews are the place to raise bone health.
In this guide
01 · The short answer
Does Mounjaro cause bone loss?
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 The official place to check listed side effects is the Summary of Product Characteristics and the patient information leaflet.113
Where a symptom is not listed there, the sensible step is to discuss it with your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19
02 · Is this relevant to you?
Should bone health change your decision?
It depends on your own history, which is why a clinician needs to hear it. People who already have a bone condition, have broken bones easily, or take medicines that affect bones should say so in their consultation. Our weight loss clinic consultation is free and is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, who can weigh this against the benefit of treatment.
If you are simply curious, the practical position is calm. Mounjaro is licensed for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and that framing matters for bone health as much as for weight.1
If you are ready to see what treatment involves, the Mounjaro pen page shows current prices and starts the consultation. All six doses are in stock.

04 · Why people ask this
Why the bone density question comes up
People ask about GLP-1 and bone density because these medicines lead to meaningful weight loss, and weight change is something many readers associate with changes elsewhere in the body.
The size of the weight change in trials is the reason the topic is discussed at all. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary.
05 · What the label covers
What the licensing documents are for
The Summary of Product Characteristics and the patient information leaflet are the documents that list the known side effects of Mounjaro. They are written for prescribers and patients.113 Read them before you start, and keep the leaflet that comes with your pen.
If you notice something that is not described there, such as new bone pain, a fracture or any symptom that worries you, the right route is simple. Tell your prescriber, and consider reporting it through the Yellow Card scheme, which is how suspected side effects are collected for the medicines regulator.19
Our guide on whether Mounjaro causes bone density issues takes the same approach: start from the licence, then talk to a clinician.
06 · How Mounjaro works
What Mounjaro does in the body
Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.
Pages on GLP-1 bone loss and on whether weight loss drugs affect bone density are worth reading, but check any figure they give against the label and a clinician.
07 · Before you start
What to tell your prescriber
The most useful thing you can do about bone health is to give your prescriber a full picture before treatment begins. That is what the free online consultation is for, and it is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber rather than a scoring script.
Worth mentioning, if they apply to you:
- any diagnosed bone condition, or a history of fractures
- any medicines you take regularly, including ones prescribed for other conditions
- other long-term conditions, and whether you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy (Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive)
- how much physical activity you currently do, and what you are able to add
It is simply the information a prescriber needs to judge whether treatment is suitable. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 Ask your prescriber what kind of activity suits you given your own history.
08 · During treatment
What to do if something changes
If you develop a new symptom during treatment, contact your prescriber. Ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments are part of the aftercare we provide, and side-effect support is available through our team.
For symptoms such as bone pain, there are many possible explanations unrelated to any medicine. A clinician can sort these out. Our article on whether Mounjaro can cause bone pain goes through that question in the same spirit.
When you contact us, say what the symptom is, when it began and what you were doing, and which pen strength you are on. If the symptom is serious or sudden, get medical help straight away instead of waiting for a review. Afterwards, consider a Yellow Card report.19
Support is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat, or by phone on 0333 207 0413.
09 · Stopping and clearance
If you stop Mounjaro
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system.1 There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average. Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.
If you are thinking of stopping because of a bone-health worry, speak to your prescriber first. They can review your history and your dose with you.
You can also ask a question without committing to anything. The consultation is free, carries no obligation, and the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees.
10 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
11 · Access and cost
NHS and private routes
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
Whichever route you take, the bone-health conversation is the same: tell the prescriber your history and ask your questions. Privately, our Mounjaro pen comes from official LillyDirect supply, with free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging, and same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
