A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro can be prescribed alongside HRT, and no interaction is known.
  • Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, so tablets may be absorbed more slowly when you start.
  • Tell your prescriber about all HRT, whether tablet, patch, gel, spray or coil.
  • Mounjaro's eligibility criteria are the same at any adult age; menopause does not change them.
  • Mounjaro is licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes, not for menopause symptoms.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can you take Mounjaro if you are on HRT?

Yes. Mounjaro can be prescribed alongside HRT, and there is no known interaction.1 Its eligibility criteria are the same at any adult age, so being on HRT neither rules you out nor puts you in a special category.13

The practical point is absorption. Tirzepatide slows how quickly the stomach empties.1 Oral medicines in general can therefore be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment. That matters most for HRT taken by mouth, so mention it in your consultation.

02 · Your next step

What should you do next?

Tell the prescriber every medicine you take, including the type of HRT and how you take it. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews each consultation, so your HRT is considered as part of the whole picture.

For a wider view of the service, see our weight loss clinic.

03 · Why absorption matters

Why stomach emptying matters for HRT

Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 Slower emptying is why most people feel fuller sooner.

The same effect is the reason oral medicines can be absorbed more slowly at the start of treatment. There is no known interaction between Mounjaro and HRT.1

If you take HRT tablets, you can ask your prescriber or menopause clinician whether the form you use suits you. Do not stop or change HRT on your own because you are starting Mounjaro. Our guide on whether Mounjaro interferes with HRT goes through the question in more detail.

04 · Types of HRT

Tablets, patches, gels and the coil

HRT comes in several forms, and the route matters when a medicine slows stomach emptying. Tablets pass through the stomach. Patches, gels and sprays are absorbed through the skin, and a coil sits in the womb.

Oral medicines in general can be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment, and your prescriber decides what suits you. If you use a gel, it is still worth naming it in your consultation. Your prescriber needs the full list.

Other organisations, including the British Menopause Society, publish their own views on GLP-1 treatments and HRT. Read our summary of what the BMS says about Mounjaro and HRT, and discuss anything that applies to you with a clinician who knows your history.

05 · Menopause and weight

Menopause weight gain and what Mounjaro can do

Weight gain around menopause is common. It is driven by hormonal and metabolic change, which can make diet-only approaches slower.13

What the trials show is overall weight change. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes. It is not a treatment for hot flushes, sleep disturbance or other menopause symptoms, and you should keep using the treatments your clinician has given you for those.1

06 · Other medicines

Which medicines need a conversation?

Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed "research" peptides or compounded copies. Always give your prescriber a full list, including HRT, prescription medicines and anything bought over the counter. Insulin and sulfonylureas are one example: doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar.1

If you notice a new symptom after starting treatment, tell your prescriber. You can also report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Our HRT and Mounjaro side effects guide covers what to watch for. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

07 · NHS or private

NHS or private access

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

If you are on HRT through the NHS, your GP can tell you where you sit in the local rollout. Private treatment is supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.

08 · Timing and stopping

Starting, stopping and follow-up

Treatment starts at 2.5mg and steps up over time. Our Mounjaro and HRT week by week guide shows what to expect while both are in your routine.

If you stop, tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days. After a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system.1 Nothing needs doing while it clears. Our prescribing team offers ongoing monthly reviews, so you can raise any HRT questions as your dose changes.

Does HRT stop Mounjaro working?

What medications should you not take with Mounjaro?
Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed "research" peptides or compounded copies, and you should give your prescriber every medicine you take, including HRT.
