Is 10mg Mounjaro Effective? What the Evidence Shows (October 2026)
Yes, 10mg Mounjaro is an effective dose: in the main obesity trial, people on 10mg lost on average 19.5% of their body weight over 72 weeks, alongside diet and exercise.2 That is a trial average, and individual results vary. Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg; higher is not automatically better. A 10mg pen costs £290.99 per month. Prices checked 11 October 2026.

before you start.
-
10mg is a well-evidenced maintenance dose, with strong average results in the main obesity trial over 72 weeks.
-
Higher is not automatically better: many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg, and your prescriber guides the pace.
-
Early weeks are an adjustment phase, so judge 10mg by the trend over months, not by single weigh-ins.
-
If appetite control fades or progress stalls, review diet, routine and dose with your prescriber rather than changing the pen yourself.
-
A 10mg pen costs £290.99 at the standard price, and every later order is £25 off.

01 · The short answer
Is 10mg Mounjaro effective for weight loss?
Yes, 10mg is effective for most people who reach it, and the trial evidence is strong. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2
Those are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 The numbers describe a group, so they cannot predict what you personally will lose on 10mg.
The same trial reported how many people reached meaningful milestones. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2
02 · Comparing doses
Is 10mg better than 7.5mg, or than 15mg?
10mg is not automatically better than 7.5mg or worse than 15mg; your prescriber will guide the right dose and pace for you. Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg, and higher is not automatically better; your prescriber will guide the right pace.1
| Dose | Where it sits | Who it often suits | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5mg | First step after the starting dose | Many people settle here | Average trial results are lower than at higher doses |
| 7.5mg | Middle step | Steps up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals | Your prescriber guides the pace |
| 10mg | Upper-middle step and common maintenance dose | Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg | Side effects are most likely when moving up a dose |
| 15mg | Maximum licensed dose | Up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on response and tolerance | Higher is not automatically better |
It is a clinical decision, made after a review, not a race. Our page on the Mounjaro 10mg dose covers the practical side in more detail.
03 · What to do next
Is 10mg right for you, and what next?
Whether 10mg is right for you is a decision for your prescriber, based on how you respond and tolerate treatment. Nobody should jump straight to 10mg: everyone starts on 2.5mg, and the dose then rises in steps of at least four weeks each.1
If you are weighing up treatment, our weight loss clinic explains how a consultation works. A 10mg Mounjaro pen costs £290.99 at the standard price, which works out at £72.75 per week, and the doses are in stock. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25).

04 · What the trial shows
What the trial evidence actually tells you
The evidence for 10mg comes mainly from the SURMOUNT-1 obesity trial. Participants were adults taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise, and the comparison group made lifestyle changes alone.2 Over 72 weeks the difference between the groups was large.
It is worth reading these numbers carefully. An average of 19.5% on 10mg means some people lost more and some lost less. The headline figure is a midpoint for a group who took the medicine for well over a year, not a promise for any individual or any timescale.
It is also worth noticing what the trial does not say. It does not say 10mg is necessary. The same trial reports strong results at 5mg and slightly higher average results at 15mg.
Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg, and your prescriber guides the right pace.1
05 · How long it takes
How long does 10mg take to kick in?
10mg does not usually feel like a sudden switch, because you do not start there. By the time you reach 10mg you have already been on lower doses for several steps, so your body is partly adapted and the change is a gradual strengthening of effects you already know.
Doses step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of every four weeks, up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.1
Effects on the scales are slower and less tidy. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design, and trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days. Judge progress by trend rather than individual weigh-ins, because water weight and normal fluctuation can hide real change from week to week.
Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle. If they do not settle, or if they are severe, speak to your clinical team rather than pushing through.
06 · Hunger on 10mg
Why am I still hungry on 10mg?
Some hunger on 10mg is common and does not mean the medicine has failed. Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 It makes eating less easier; it does not remove appetite entirely.
Practical steps that sit within normal healthy-eating advice include planning regular meals, choosing filling foods, keeping to the same injection day each week and not skipping doses. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day.1
If hunger has clearly increased over several weeks, speak to your prescriber. They can look at your dose, routine and any other medicines. Do not try to stretch or alter doses yourself.
07 · When appetite fades
Why Mounjaro may stop suppressing your appetite
Appetite control can feel weaker over time, and there are ordinary explanations to check before assuming the medicine has stopped working.
Weight loss on Mounjaro is not linear: plateaus of a few weeks are normal and expected as the body adapts to a lower weight. A plateau is a reason for a review, not a reason to panic. Your prescriber can look at the trend, your diet and activity, and whether a dose change is appropriate.
Treatment response is reviewed by your prescriber: if you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.2
08 · Fat or appetite?
Does Mounjaro burn fat or just suppress appetite?
Mounjaro works through appetite and digestion. Tirzepatide helps regulate appetite, slows how quickly the stomach empties, and improves the way the body responds to insulin.1 Eating less then creates the calorie reduction that leads to weight loss.
This is why the medicine is licensed for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. The medicine makes the diet easier to follow; it does not replace it.
Early loss on the scales also includes water weight, so the first readings can look more dramatic or more disappointing than the underlying trend. Judge progress over months.
The dual action of GIP and GLP-1 is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic).1 Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label.
09 · Speeding up progress
How to get the most from 10mg safely
Several habits help you get the most from the dose you are on. Taking it on the same day each week matters more than the time of day: there is no best time, and Mounjaro works the same morning or evening, with or without food.1
Build meals around protein and fibre, drink enough fluids, keep moving in a way you can sustain and protect your sleep. These are standard healthy-living steps and they support the reduced-calorie diet the medicine is designed to work with.
Inject correctly. Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week at the stomach area, the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection, and you should rotate the site with each dose.1
Store pens properly. Keep Mounjaro pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, after which it should be discarded.1
Avoid anything marketed as a booster, and do not combine the medicine with unlicensed products. If you want faster progress, the right route is a conversation with your prescriber about your dose.
10 · Food and side effects
Foods to avoid and side effects on 10mg
No food is banned on Mounjaro. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly, so smaller, slower meals work better.
The commonest early effects are mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection, and these usually settle.1 Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts.
Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 If you take insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting to avoid low blood sugar.
You can report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Report new symptoms rather than assuming they are harmless or unrelated.
11 · Restarting treatment
Does Mounjaro work second time around?
After a final dose, tirzepatide takes four to five weeks to clear the system, and there is no way to speed this up.1 If you have been off for a while, your prescriber will decide where to restart, and you should not simply resume at 10mg. The licensed ladder begins at 2.5mg for tolerability, and your prescriber can set the pace within the licence.
Repeat orders at EverydayMeds re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping, so a restart is always reviewed.
Treatment response is formally reviewed by your prescriber, and any decision to continue, adjust or stop is made with you.
12 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
13 · NHS and private access
NHS and private access to higher doses
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
Private treatment through EverydayMeds starts with a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. It is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. We are a GPhC-registered pharmacy (9012878), and our Mounjaro is supplied through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution.
Orders placed by 3pm are dispatched the same day, with free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. Ongoing monthly reviews are included, and the 10mg strength is in stock. If you already hold a 10mg prescription elsewhere, see our page on a 10mg Mounjaro pen, and for supply questions read whether 10mg is on backorder. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine supplied after a consultation, and individual results vary.
