A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • You can buy GLP-1 shares through an ISA, a general investment account or a SIPP, using any FCA-regulated UK broker that offers the relevant stock exchange.
  • There are three broad routes: pharmaceutical makers, wider supply-chain and consumer companies affected by the drugs, or a diversified fund.
  • Share prices move on trial data, regulation, pricing and competition, not only on how well a medicine works clinically.
  • No one can say which share will rise. Anything promising specific returns should be treated with suspicion.
  • If your real goal is a GLP-1 treatment for yourself rather than a portfolio, a GPhC-registered prescriber can assess whether you are eligible.
In this guide

01 · Step by step

How to buy GLP-1 stocks from the UK

You can buy GLP-1 stocks in five practical steps, and none of them needs specialist access. The same process works for any listed company, whatever sector it is in.

  • Choose an account type. A stocks and shares ISA shelters gains and dividends from UK tax within your annual allowance. A general investment account has no allowance limit but is taxable. A SIPP is a pension wrapper. Which suits you depends on your circumstances, so check gov.uk or speak to an authorised adviser.
  • Pick an FCA-regulated broker or platform. Check the firm appears on the Financial Conduct Authority register, and compare dealing fees, currency conversion charges and account fees. Charges can quietly erode returns on small purchases.
  • Check the exchange. Several of the best-known GLP-1 developers are listed in the United States, so buying their shares means dealing in dollars and paying a foreign-exchange cost. Some are listed in Europe. Your broker will say which markets it covers.
  • Fund the account and place an order. A market order buys at the current price. A limit order buys only at a price you set. Limit orders help when prices are moving fast.
  • Review and keep records. Keep contract notes for tax. Decide in advance when you would sell, so a headline does not make the decision for you.

That is the mechanical answer. The harder question is what to buy, and a pharmacy cannot advise on that.

02 · Your options

Three routes into the GLP-1 theme

Investors usually approach the theme in one of three ways, each with a different risk profile.

RouteWhat you ownMain attractionMain risk
Medicine makersShares in the pharmaceutical companies that develop and sell GLP-1 medicines, such as Eli Lilly, which makes Mounjaro (tirzepatide)1Most direct link to GLP-1 salesConcentration: one trial result, safety signal or pricing change can move the share sharply
Clinical-stage biotechsSmaller companies developing new obesity or diabetes medicinesPotential for large gains if a product succeedsMost pipeline medicines never reach the market; you can lose most or all of your money
Funds and ETFsA basket of healthcare or obesity-themed companiesSpreads risk across many holdingsFees, and the theme may be a small slice of the fund; always read the holdings list
Indirect exposureCompanies in food, drink, medical devices or healthcare services that could be affected by wider GLP-1 useDifferent angle, sometimes lower valuationThe link to GLP-1 demand is harder to measure and may be small

If you want a deeper look at individual names, see Mounjaro stocks and weight loss medication stocks.

03 · Straight talk

What we can and cannot tell you

We can explain how the medicines work and how they are prescribed in the UK, but we cannot tell you which share to buy. That is regulated financial advice, and we are a GPhC-registered pharmacy, not an investment firm.

That is also why we do not name a "best" GLP-1 stock, list shares "to buy today" or predict which will "skyrocket". Pages that do are guessing. Markets price in expectations, so a medicine can be a clinical success and the share can still fall if the result was already assumed. If you want a view on a specific share, speak to an FCA-authorised adviser and read the company's own annual report.

04 · What the drugs do

What GLP-1 medicines actually do

GLP-1 medicines mimic natural gut hormones that regulate appetite, and understanding that is the foundation of any sensible investment view. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin. This dual action is what distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic).1

For an investor, the point is that these are real, licensed medicines with published trial data, not a speculative concept. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages, and individual results vary.2

Clinical success does not equal investment success, though. Share prices depend on sales volumes, pricing, competition and expectations, as the next sections show.

05 · What moves share prices

What moves GLP-1 share prices

Four forces matter most: clinical data, regulation, pricing and competition. Understanding each helps you read headlines with a cooler head.

Clinical data. New trial results can reset expectations overnight. A head-to-head trial, a new indication or a safety review can each lift or knock a share. Smaller companies are the most sensitive because a single product often represents most of their value.

Regulation and access. Licences, safety reviews and health-service decisions affect how many people can be prescribed a medicine. In the UK, access on the NHS is being phased in over several years, while private prescribing is available to adults who meet the licensed criteria.4 Changes to either route change the size of the addressable market.

Pricing. Price changes affect revenue but also patient demand. Pharmacy sell prices differ because of confidential discounts. Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens ranged from £143.96 to £339.00 per month at our last check on 10 October 2026.

Competition. Several companies are developing new GLP-1 medicines, including tablets. Competing products can take market share, and a rival's good trial result can hurt a share even when your own company has done nothing wrong.

06 · Risks to weigh

The risks of investing in GLP-1 stocks

The main risk is that you can lose some or all of the money you invest, and a popular theme raises that risk rather than lowering it. A few specific points are worth understanding before you put money in.

  • Valuation risk. When a theme is widely discussed, prices often already reflect optimistic expectations. If growth merely meets expectations, the share may fall.
  • Concentration risk. Holding two or three GLP-1 companies is not diversification. They tend to rise and fall together on sector news.
  • Currency risk. Buying US-listed shares exposes you to the pound-dollar exchange rate on top of the share price.
  • Pipeline risk. Early-stage biotechs often have no approved product. Most experimental medicines do not reach pharmacies.
  • Headline risk. Social media and clickbait lists of "stocks to buy now" encourage chasing prices after a rise. Decisions made on a headline are often decisions made late.
  • Scam risk. Be wary of anyone who contacts you out of the blue, promises specific returns or pressures you to act quickly. Check any firm on the FCA register first.

A sensible approach, widely taught by regulators, is to invest only money you can afford to lose, spread it across sectors, and avoid borrowing to invest. None of this is specific to GLP-1 shares, but it applies strongly to a fashionable theme.

07 · Funds and ETFs

Is there an ETF for GLP-1 drugs?

You may find funds with an obesity, healthcare or biotech theme, but you should always check what a fund actually holds before buying. Treat this as a method rather than a shortlist.

Before buying a themed fund, check five things on its factsheet:

  • Top holdings. Do they include the companies making GLP-1 medicines, and at what weighting? A "healthcare" fund may hold very little of the theme.
  • Number of holdings. A fund with a handful of stocks is concentrated; one with hundreds is diluted.
  • Ongoing charges. Fees compound over time and come out whether the fund rises or falls.
  • Currency and domicile. This affects tax treatment and whether it can sit inside an ISA.
  • Index or active. An active fund relies on a manager's choices; an index fund follows rules.

A broad healthcare or global equity fund may already give you some GLP-1 exposure inside a more diversified holding. For many people that is a calmer way to take part in the theme than buying individual shares.

08 · Medicine or portfolio?

If you want the medicine, not the shares

If your interest in GLP-1 is personal rather than financial, the route is a prescription, not a brokerage account. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and a prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines first.1

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

EverydayMeds is a GPhC-registered UK online pharmacy (registration 9012878) with official LillyDirect supply, meaning Mounjaro comes direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), and every later order is £25 off the standard price. You can see current doses and prices on the Mounjaro pen page, which shows all six doses in stock. Prices checked 10 October 2026.

Do not confuse the two goals. Owning shares in a manufacturer gives you no access to the medicine, and nothing about holding a share changes whether a medicine is suitable for you.

09 · Understanding the product

Why product knowledge helps investors

Knowing how a medicine is actually used helps you judge claims about demand. Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week. After at least 4 weeks the dose rises to 5mg, then can step up by 2.5mg at minimum 4-week intervals up to a maximum of 15mg weekly. Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg, and higher is not automatically better.1

Each pen contains four weekly doses, so one pen lasts four weeks. That is why costs are quoted monthly.

Treatment is also reviewed: if someone has lost less than 5% of their starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, their prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right.1 Weight loss is gradual by design, and the first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase. Our guide to Mounjaro before and after one month explains what early weeks typically look like.

Two practical points for readers who analyse demand: first, individual results vary, so trial averages do not predict your own result. Second, the medicine works alongside diet and activity, not instead of them. Be sceptical of any investment story that treats demand as unlimited or outcomes as uniform.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can you buy GLP-1 stock?
Yes. You buy shares in the companies that make GLP-1 medicines through an FCA-regulated broker or investment platform, using an ISA, general investment account or SIPP. You can also buy a fund that holds them. There is no single "GLP-1 share", and this is general information rather than financial advice, so consider speaking to an authorised adviser.
Which GLP-1 stock is the best?
No share is best for everyone. The right choice depends on your risk tolerance, time horizon and existing holdings. Compare companies using their published annual reports, understand what each one's GLP-1 exposure really is, and consider an authorised adviser if you are unsure.
Is there an ETF for GLP-1 drugs?
Funds with obesity, biotech or healthcare themes may exist, but check what any fund holds before buying. Before buying, read the factsheet: check the top holdings, number of holdings, ongoing charges, currency and whether it can sit inside an ISA. A broad healthcare fund may already give you some exposure inside a more diversified portfolio.
What stocks will skyrocket in 2026?
No one can know. Lists promising stocks that will "skyrocket" are guesswork, and a fashionable theme can already be priced for good news. Share prices can fall as well as rise, and you can lose money. Treat any claim of specific returns with suspicion, and check any firm making one on the FCA register.
Do GLP-1 shares rise when the medicines succeed in trials?
Not always. Strong results, such as SURMOUNT-1 showing average weight loss of 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, show a medicine works, but markets react to results relative to expectations. Individual results vary, and a share can fall on good news if it was already assumed. Pricing, competition and regulation matter too.
Does owning shares in a drug maker give me access to the medicine?
No. Owning shares gives you a stake in a company, not a prescription. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. If you want to find out whether treatment suits you, you can start a free consultation with us, with no obligation.
Is Mounjaro available on the NHS?
Yes, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first. Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
What are the biggest risks of investing in GLP-1 stocks?
You can lose some or all of your money. Specific risks include high valuations after a popular run, concentration in a few similar companies, currency swings on US-listed shares, and pipeline failures at small biotechs. Only invest money you can afford to lose, diversify, and avoid acting on headlines alone.
