A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Trial averages rise with dose, and the figures come from 72 weeks of treatment, not a few weeks.
  • Mounjaro works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
  • Your own result depends on dose reached, how long you stay on treatment, diet, activity and your starting point.
  • Weight usually comes off gradually, so a single week's scale reading says little about your overall direction.
  • A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your progress and guides dose changes; you should not adjust doses yourself.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

How much weight will you actually lose on Mounjaro?

You will most likely lose weight steadily rather than quickly, and the total depends on the dose you reach and how long you stay on treatment. The trial averages are a guide, but they are averages. Individual results vary.

It helps to think in percentages of your starting weight rather than a fixed number of kilograms or stones. If you want a worked example, for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is the average on the highest dose at the end of the trial, not a target for the early months.

The trial figures also assume continued treatment alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.2 They do not describe what happens in a few weeks. Our guide to how much weight loss a week on Mounjaro covers realistic expectations, and Mounjaro weight loss in a month looks at the early stretch.

02 · Your result

What shapes your own result

Several practical factors explain why two people on the same dose can see different results.

FactorWhy it matters
Dose reachedTrial averages rise from the lower to the higher maintenance strengths, so the dose you settle on matters.
Time on treatmentThe headline figures come from 72 weeks, so early results are only part of the picture.
DietTreatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet. Feeling fuller sooner makes that easier, but it does not replace it.
Physical activityIncreased activity is part of the licensed use of the medicine.
Starting weightThe same percentage is a larger number of kilograms if you start heavier.
ConsistencyRegular weekly dosing and attending reviews keep treatment on track.
Side effectsTroublesome symptoms may slow dose increases, which changes your path.

None of these is a reason to expect failure. They are reasons to treat the trial average as a range of possible outcomes rather than a forecast. For a fuller picture of what to anticipate over time, see Mounjaro expected weight loss.

03 · What to do next

Is this relevant to you, and what next?

If you are an adult with a weight-management goal and want clinical support, the next step is a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. They decide whether Mounjaro is suitable for you and guide your starting dose. You can see current pen prices and start the process on the Mounjaro pen page, where a 2.5mg starter pen is shown at £169.99 standard price.

If you would like broader context first, our weight loss clinic hub explains the wider approach, including diet, activity and review support.

04 · Trial results by dose

What SURMOUNT-1 found, dose by dose

The SURMOUNT-1 figures are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

The trial also reported how many people reached particular milestones. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2

The comparison group received lifestyle changes alone, so the gap shows what the medicine adds on top of diet and activity.

05 · The early weeks

What to expect in the early weeks

In the early weeks you are likely to notice appetite changes before you notice much on the scales. Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

Each KwikPen contains four weekly doses. Because you are still working up through the strengths, early weight change is typically smaller than the figures for the higher maintenance doses. That is a normal pattern, not a sign that the medicine is failing.

Many people ask what to expect in the second month or in the third week. The honest answer is that the picture varies. Some people see steady movement on the scales; others notice smaller clothing changes, less snacking and more control around food before the number moves. Weight also fluctuates day to day with fluid, food volume and bowel habits, so track a trend over several weeks rather than reacting to single readings. Our free GLPTrackr companion app is designed for exactly that kind of tracking.

If side effects such as nausea make eating difficult, speak to your prescriber rather than pausing or changing the dose yourself. If a new dose is hard to tolerate, prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up.

06 · Pounds per week

Weekly loss and big milestones

The trial figures describe total change over 72 weeks, not a weekly rate, and weekly loss in real life is uneven. Some weeks show a drop, some show little, and occasionally the scale goes up before it comes down again.

Large totals are possible for some people over a long treatment course, particularly at higher doses. Losing a lot very quickly is not the goal of treatment. Steady loss, supported by diet and activity, is what the trial pattern reflects.2 If you are losing weight faster than you feel comfortable with, or you cannot eat enough, tell your prescriber.

For smaller goals, such as a modest amount over a few months, results depend on starting weight, dose and habits. Many people reach this sort of change, but results vary, so it helps to set expectations at a sensible level.

07 · What to avoid

What to avoid while taking Mounjaro

The main thing to avoid is treating the injection as a replacement for diet and activity. Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and results vary.2

Several other points matter for safety:

  • Oral contraceptives: the medicine can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1
  • Insulin or sulfonylureas: doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar, so tell your prescriber about any diabetes treatment.13
  • Unregulated sellers: avoid anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. Counterfeit medicines are a real risk, and the MHRA publishes alerts.7
  • Self-adjusting doses: your prescriber guides dose changes, so do not change your dose yourself.

If you notice a new symptom, speak to your prescriber and consider reporting it through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Hair thinning is one concern some people raise; our guide on whether you can get hair loss from Mounjaro explains what to know.

08 · Keeping the weight off

What happens if you stop

Results depend on continuing treatment and the habits you build alongside it, so stopping is a decision to plan with your prescriber. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

As the medicine clears, appetite effects fade, and some people notice hunger returning. That is why diet and activity habits built during treatment matter. If you are worried about how stopping might feel, read can you withdraw from Mounjaro and can you get withdrawals from Mounjaro. For background on the medicine itself, see what Mounjaro is derived from.

09 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

10 · NHS and private routes

NHS or private: how people access it

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).4 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

If you choose a private route, check the pharmacy is on the GPhC register. EverydayMeds is GPhC-registered (9012878) and supplies genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply. Consultation is free, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews every order, ongoing monthly reviews are included, and delivery is free next-day tracked. Same-day dispatch applies when you order by 3pm. Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
How many pounds will I lose in a week on Mounjaro?
There is no fixed weekly amount. Trial figures describe total change over 72 weeks, and week-to-week loss is uneven, with some weeks showing little change. Early weeks on the starter dose are usually quieter than later ones. Track your trend over several weeks rather than single readings, and speak to your prescriber if you are concerned about the pace.
How long does it take to lose a large amount of weight on Mounjaro?
The trial averages come from 72 weeks of treatment alongside diet and activity, and larger totals usually build over a long course at higher doses. Your starting weight, dose and habits all change the timing, so your prescriber can help you set realistic milestones.
What should I expect in the second month of Mounjaro?
By then you are usually stepping up through the doses. Many people notice reduced appetite and feeling full sooner, with gradual weight change rather than dramatic drops. Side effects may appear after dose increases. Weight fluctuates day to day, so judge progress over several weeks, and tell your prescriber if side effects make eating difficult.
How much weight should I lose on Mounjaro after a few months?
It varies, and the published averages relate to 72 weeks, not a few months. Early results usually reflect the lower doses while you titrate, so they are typically smaller than the maintenance-dose averages. Individual results vary with diet, activity and starting weight. Your monthly review is the place to discuss whether your progress is on track.
Is it normal to lose several stone in a few months on Mounjaro?
Some people lose weight quickly, but rapid loss is not the aim and cannot be expected. The trial results describe gradual change over 72 weeks. If you are losing weight very fast, struggling to eat enough or feeling unwell, contact your prescriber rather than continuing unchanged.
What should I avoid while taking Mounjaro?
Avoid relying on the injection without diet and activity changes, buying from sellers who supply without a consultation or prescription, and changing your dose yourself. Tell your prescriber about oral contraceptives, since absorption can be reduced, and about insulin or sulfonylureas, since doses may need adjusting. If you take the pill, switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
Do the trial results predict how much I will lose?
No. Trial averages do not predict your own result. SURMOUNT-1 reported average loss by dose over 72 weeks, and individual results vary with diet, activity, dose reached and how long you stay on treatment.
