Health Benefits of Weight Loss Injections (UK Guide, October 2026)
The main health benefit of weight loss injections is substantial, sustained weight reduction: in the SURMOUNT-1 trial, adults taking tirzepatide lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, against 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 Results vary, and treatment works alongside diet and activity. A Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 per month. Prices checked 10 October 2026.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
The best-evidenced benefit is weight reduction: SURMOUNT-1 averages ranged from 15% (5mg) to 20.9% (15mg) over 72 weeks, and individual results vary.
-
Tirzepatide helps regulate appetite, slows stomach emptying and improves how the body responds to insulin.
-
Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30+, or 27–30 with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or prediabetes.
-
Early side effects such as mild nausea and tiredness are common and usually settle; benefits build gradually from 5mg onward.
-
Injections are not a shortcut: they work alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

01 · The short answer
What health benefits can weight loss injections offer?
The clearest benefit is meaningful weight loss, delivered alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. In SURMOUNT-1, which enrolled 2,539 adults, average loss over 72 weeks was 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg, compared with 3.1% for lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary.
Many articles list a long chain of knock-on benefits. The table shows where the evidence is direct, and where you should ask your prescriber rather than rely on a headline.
| Area | What is known | Where the limit is |
|---|---|---|
| Body weight | SURMOUNT-1 averages of 15% (5mg), 19.5% (10mg) and 20.9% (15mg) at 72 weeks2 | Trial averages do not predict your own result |
| Appetite | Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals1 | Experience differs; some feel little until a higher dose |
| Insulin response | Tirzepatide improves the way the body responds to insulin1 | This is a mechanism, not a promise of a specific blood-sugar outcome |
| Weight-related conditions | The licence recognises high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes when assessing suitability1 | Your prescriber decides what treatment means for your own conditions |
| Inflammation, joints, mood, fertility | Ask your prescriber about these | Do not assume a benefit |
That last row matters. If a particular condition is your reason for considering treatment, raise it in your consultation.
02 · Is it for you?
Who is likely to benefit, and who is eligible?
Eligibility follows the licence. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1
A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.1 If you want a broader overview of the class, our weight loss injections guide compares the options, and our page on the Mounjaro health benefits goes deeper on this one medicine.
03 · Getting started
What does it cost and how do you start?
The Mounjaro pen costs £169.99 per month at the 2.5mg starting dose, and every dose from 2.5mg to 15mg is in stock. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40. A new customer's first order at any dose carries the same £40 new-customer discount, and every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25). Prices were checked 10 October 2026.
If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices, before discounts. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. A new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order £25 less.
Ordering works in four steps:
- Free online consultation: a short health questionnaire, no charge and no obligation.
- Prescriber review: reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
- Dispensing and dispatch: dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.
- Delivery: free next-day tracked delivery in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.
You can start your free consultation whenever you are ready. We supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, and ongoing monthly reviews with the prescribing team are included.
04 · How the injections work
How do weight loss injections work?
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1
Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.
This dual action distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic).1 For a plain-English primer on the wider class, see what the health benefits of GLP-1 medicines are.
The benefit is indirect. The medicine changes appetite and digestion; the weight loss, and anything that follows from it, comes through eating less and moving more over months. That is why the licence ties treatment to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.11
05 · What SURMOUNT-1 shows
What does the main trial evidence show?
SURMOUNT-1 is the headline trial for tirzepatide in weight management. Over 72 weeks, 2,539 adults taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2
The spread of results is as important as the average. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20%.2
To make the percentages concrete: for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg and 15% is about 15 kg. Your own starting weight, dose and tolerance will change the picture, and trial averages do not predict your own result.
These figures describe weight change, not proof of any particular outcome for blood pressure, cholesterol, joints or heart health. For a wider look at the topic, see our overview of the health benefits Mounjaro may have.
06 · Weight-related conditions
Which weight-related conditions does the licence recognise?
The licence names the conditions that count as weight-related: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.1 For someone with a BMI between 27 and 30, having at least one of these is what makes treatment licensed.
Mounjaro is also licensed for type 2 diabetes, and the improved response to insulin is part of how tirzepatide works.1 If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, your doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar, so tell your prescriber about every medicine you take.
If you live with one of these conditions, the practical step is a conversation, not an assumption. Your prescriber can tell you how treatment fits with your current medicines and monitoring. Do not change other medicines yourself.
The same logic applies to claims about energy, mobility, sleep or mood. Our page on health benefits of GLP-1 treatment discusses the class more broadly.
07 · Realistic pace
How fast do the benefits arrive?
Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days.2
Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week. After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, then can step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg) up to 15mg, depending on response and tolerance. Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg, and higher is not automatically better.1
Some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one; others feel little until a higher dose. Both are normal. Early loss includes water weight, so the trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in.1
Your prescriber reviews your response. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, they will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.1
There is no approved way to speed this up beyond following the licensed schedule.
08 · Side effects and safety
What are the risks and side effects?
The commonest early effects are mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection, and these usually settle.1 The full list of side effects is in the patient information leaflet supplied with every pen.13 Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis), pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems), or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.
A benefit is only a benefit if the treatment is safe for you, which is why every order is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Tell them about your medical history and everything you take, including contraception, because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1
Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom. You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19
Buy only from a registered pharmacy. Beware of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, because counterfeit pens are a recognised risk.7 You can check our registration (9012878) on the GPhC register.
09 · NHS or private?
Can you get weight loss injections on the NHS?
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46
Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Ask your GP about NHS eligibility first if you are in a higher-need group.
If you go private, our online registration for weight loss injections explains the process, and our overview of the benefits of weight loss drugs covers the trade-offs. You can also browse all weight loss treatments we offer.
10 · Limits and expectations
What can weight loss injections not do?
They do not replace diet and activity. Mounjaro must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 The injection supports the habits; it does not substitute for them.
They do not work on a fixed timetable. Progress is judged by trend, not by individual weigh-ins, and the trial figures are averages across many people.
Finally, stopping is part of the picture. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system; there is no way to speed this up.1 Talk to your prescriber before you stop, so you can plan what happens next. Our page on health devices and weight loss injections covers the practical kit side.
11 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
