01 · The core answer
Is hair shedding on Mounjaro something to worry about?
For most people it is not a reason to worry, because it is a recognised and usually temporary effect. The UK patient leaflet lists hair loss among the common side effects of Mounjaro, and it is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.1
Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.2 So it affects a minority of people, and it is more common on treatment than without it.
If you are weighing up treatment, our guide on whether the medicine causes hair loss goes through the same evidence from a slightly different angle.
02 · Your next step
What should you do if you notice shedding?
Start with your meals, then talk to your prescriber if it worries you. Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, which is another reason your reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced.1 Eating very little is not a safer way to lose weight.
If your shedding is heavy, if it comes with other new symptoms, or if you cannot eat properly, tell the prescribing team. They can review your pace of loss and your dose. Our weight loss prescribers run ongoing monthly reviews, and side-effect support is part of the aftercare.
03 · Why shedding happens
Why hair sheds during rapid weight loss
The clinical position is that shedding is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.1 In practice, your body is adapting to eating less and losing weight quickly.
Mounjaro activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite so most people feel fuller sooner.1 That reduced intake is the intended effect. It is also why the diet must stay balanced, with protein in particular.
Many people also lose hair for reasons unrelated to treatment. If your hair was already thinning, or the pattern looks unusual, ask a clinician rather than assuming the medicine is the cause. Our page on Mounjaro hair side effects covers the wider picture.
04 · Hair breakage
Is hair breakage the same as hair shedding?
Not exactly: hair loss is on the leaflet's list of side effects, but breakage is not. Shedding means hairs falling out from the root.
The UK patient leaflet lists hair loss as a common side effect (up to 1 in 10 people) but does not name breakage separately, so a sudden change in hair texture is worth describing to your prescriber. They can help work out whether it relates to your diet, your pace of weight loss or something else entirely. You can also report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19
Gentle handling is sensible while your hair is under strain. Avoid tight hairstyles, limit heat styling and be careful with chemical treatments. That is general hair care, not a treatment for the medicine's effects.
05 · What helps
How to reduce hair shedding on Mounjaro
You cannot stop shedding on demand, but you can support your body while it settles.
- Keep meals balanced. Protein and overall nutrition matter, so do not let the reduced appetite turn into skipped meals.1
- Avoid chasing maximum speed. A loss pace guided by your prescriber rather than maximum speed is the approach recommended.1
- Do not rush the dose ladder. If a dose is hard to tolerate, prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up.1
- Stay hydrated and keep gentle activity going, including resistance exercise if you can.
- Be gentle with your hair.
Do not stop treatment on your own because of shedding. If it is distressing, speak to your clinical team first.
06 · How long it lasts
How long does shedding last, and does hair grow back?
It is described as temporary, and for most people it settles as weight stabilises.1
For a fuller discussion, see whether Mounjaro hair loss is temporary and what people ask about Mounjaro hair growth.
If shedding continues long after your weight has levelled off, or you notice bald patches, see your GP or prescriber to look for other causes.

For NHS patients, our page on hair loss and Mounjaro on the NHS explains where to raise concerns. NHS access to Mounjaro is being phased in over several years.4
08 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
