A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
You do not need a GP referral for private GLP-1 treatment, but you do need a prescriber review of your health history.
-
GLP-1 medicines are prescription-only, so anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription should be avoided.
-
NHS access is being phased in over several years, which is why many eligible people choose regulated private care.
-
Private health insurance policies differ; check your own policy wording rather than assuming weight-loss injections are covered.
-
Your first 2.5mg Mounjaro pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99).
In this guide
01 · The core answer
Can you get GLP-1 without your GP?
Yes. A private prescriber does not need your GP to refer you. They do need an accurate health history, your height and weight, and your current medicines, because tirzepatide is a prescription-only medicine supplied only after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary.
| Route | Who decides | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| NHS | Your GP or a specialist weight-management service | Phased access; highest-need groups first |
| Private online | A GPhC-registered prescriber | Questionnaire, review, then dispensing and delivery |
| Unregulated sellers | No one qualified | Counterfeit and safety risk; avoid |
02 · What to do next
Is private treatment right for you?
It may suit you if you meet the licensed criteria and do not want to wait for NHS access. If you are ready to look at costs, our Mounjaro private guide and the Mounjaro pen page explain the options. New customers get £40 off a first order with code FIRST40, and every later order is £25 off the standard price.
03 · NHS versus private
NHS versus private GLP-1 access
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP. For a closer look at the paperwork side, see our page on a GLP-1 private prescription.
04 · What the medicine does
What a private prescription gives you
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages — individual results vary.2 Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
05 · Private health insurance
Does private health insurance cover GLP-1?
Often not, and cover differs by insurer and policy. Many policies exclude weight-loss treatment or cover only specialist-led care, so Bupa and similar insurers may not pay for Mounjaro prescribed for weight management. Check your policy wording or ask the insurer before you pay, and keep your receipts in case a claim is possible.
Our consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid with no hidden fees.
06 · Choosing a safe provider
How to spot a safe private provider
Check that the pharmacy is on the GPhC register; ours is GPhC 9012878.12 Be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, or at prices that look implausibly low, because counterfeit pens have been the subject of MHRA alerts.7
We supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, with a free consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, free next-day tracked delivery and ongoing monthly reviews. You can also read about private GLP-1 assessment or browse our weight loss clinic.
07 · How ordering works
How ordering works
First, complete the free online consultation: a short health questionnaire with no obligation. Next, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Then our registered pharmacy dispenses it, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm, and delivery is free next-day tracked in temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99. All six doses are in stock.
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes
Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.
Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day
A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
