How to Increase GLP1: Food, Habits and Medicines (October 2026)
You cannot reliably raise your own GLP1 by a meaningful amount with food or supplements. Balanced meals and regular habits are sensible, but their effect is far smaller than a licensed medicine. The proven route is a treatment such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide), which activates both GIP and GLP1 receptors.1 A Mounjaro pen costs £169.99 per month at the 2.5mg starting dose. A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Food, sleep and activity habits are worth having, but they do not replicate the effect of a prescription GLP1 medicine.
-
Mounjaro activates GIP and GLP1 receptors together, which helps regulate appetite and slows stomach emptying.
-
If you mean increasing your dose, the licensed ladder steps up after at least four weeks at the earliest, guided by your prescriber.
-
Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity, and individual results vary.

01 · The honest answer
Can you increase GLP1 naturally?
Only to a limited degree, and nobody can promise a measurable result. GLP1 is a natural gut hormone, and your body releases it as part of normal digestion. The medicines that carry the evidence work by activating the receptors for that hormone, not by nudging your own supply upwards.1
That difference matters. Articles listing foods that 'boost GLP1' usually describe small, short-lived changes in a blood marker. They rarely show that this translates into appetite control or weight loss that lasts.
Regular, balanced meals, enough protein, plenty of fibre-rich plants and sensible portions suit almost anyone who wants to manage weight. They also happen to be exactly what your prescriber will ask you to keep doing on treatment, because Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1
| Approach | What it can realistically do | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced meals, protein, fibre | Support a reduced-calorie diet and fullness; good foundations on or off treatment | — |
| Activity and sleep | Support overall health and the activity element of treatment | Treatment is used alongside increased activity |
| Supplements and 'natural Ozempic' products | Low-cost supplement, no clinical oversight; dosing is not standardised | None approved; dramatic weight-loss claims should be treated with caution |
| Viral tricks and teas | Not an established route to higher GLP1 | None |
| Licensed medicine (Mounjaro, Wegovy) | Activates GLP1 receptors; most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals | Licensed treatments with trial evidence; individual results vary |
02 · Your decision
Is a medicine the right next step?
It may be if you have a BMI that meets the licensed criteria and lifestyle changes alone have not been enough. Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults, and a prescriber decides whether it suits you.1 It is not a shortcut for people who are already a healthy weight.
If you are weighing it up, start with our weight loss clinic overview. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. If you are asking because of a specific worry, such as appetite, mood or blood pressure, our guides on GLP1 and blood pressure and on Mounjaro and anxiety cover those questions separately.
03 · How Mounjaro acts on GLP1
How Mounjaro acts on GLP1
Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1
In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 So the medicine does not 'increase' your own hormone.
This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic).1 Both are effective licensed treatments. Which suits you is a conversation with your prescriber, and our Wegovy pen page explains that option.
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection under the skin, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. There is no best time of day: what matters is consistency.1
04 · Raising your dose safely
If you mean increasing your dose
On Mounjaro, everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself.1
The dose then rises in steps through 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg and 12.5mg, up to a maximum of 15mg weekly. Each step comes no sooner than after at least four weeks, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.111
Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber will guide the right pace.1
Wegovy follows its own ladder: 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg, stepping up after 4 weeks on each of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg and 1.7mg, so the 2.4mg maintenance dose starts from week 17.
Do not take extra or earlier doses to push the effect. Prescriber-led changes within the licence are the only safe route, and our guide on whether GLP1 medicines increase metabolism explains why more is not simply better.
05 · What results to expect
What results to expect from treatment
Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The early weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month.1
Trial results show what is possible. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2
These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 Think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend, not individual weigh-ins.
Your prescriber reviews your response. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, they will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.1
Early weeks differ widely. Some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one, others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal. Early loss includes water weight, so the trend matters more than any single weigh-in.1
06 · Insulin resistance and GLP1
Does GLP1 help insulin resistance?
Mounjaro's dual action improves the way the body responds to insulin.1 Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1
If you have been told you are insulin resistant or have prediabetes, speak to your GP or prescriber about the right plan. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, tell your prescriber, because doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar.
Lifestyle changes remain central whatever the diagnosis. Treatment is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1
07 · Viral tricks and trends
Japanese tricks, superfoods and walking trends
None is an established way to raise GLP1.
Gentle walking is a sensible way to be more active, and that supports healthy habits. Treat any trend that promises dramatic weight loss, a particular body area, or a 'natural Ozempic' effect with caution. You cannot target fat loss to one area, and a product that sounds too good to be true usually is.
Supplements are low-cost and sold without clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. They are not equivalent to a licensed medicine; check with a pharmacist before taking any. Tell your prescriber about anything you take, and report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.
08 · Staying on track
Why people stop, and how to stay on track
Common themes are side effects, cost, slower progress than hoped, or life changes. All are worth raising with your prescriber before stopping.
Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.1
Habits that help any treatment: pick one injection day and keep it, rotate injection sites, keep pens correctly stored, and keep eating regular meals. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within four days of the scheduled time. After that, skip it and take the next dose on your normal day, and never take two doses within three days of each other.113
Stopping is also a decision for your prescriber and you. After a final dose, tirzepatide takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1
Other questions come up too, such as GLP1 and libido or GLP1 and estrogen.
09 · Safety: what not to do
Safety: shortcuts to avoid
Altering doses outside the licence means unknown dosing accuracy and no safety data.
The licensed ladder already starts low for tolerability.
Be careful where you buy. Offers to supply without a consultation or prescription are a warning sign. Our pens come through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. You can check our pharmacy on the GPhC register under registration 9012878.
Store pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, then discarded.
10 · Access: NHS and private
Getting a GLP1 medicine in the UK
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46
Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Ask your GP where you stand locally.
If you choose private treatment, ordering is simple: a free online consultation, a prescriber review, then dispensing and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. Same-day dispatch applies when ordered by 3pm. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). Ongoing monthly reviews are included. For background on costs, see our guide to the GLP1 price increase.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
11 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
How ordering works

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
