GLP-1 and Longevity: What the Evidence Shows (October 2026)

No GLP-1 or GIP/GLP-1 medicine is licensed in the UK to extend lifespan. Headlines about ageing and lifespan are early-stage research, not a treatment claim.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro is licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes. Lifespan extension is not a licensed use of any GLP-1 medicine.
  • Mouse studies and epigenetic-clock headlines do not show that the medicine you can be prescribed will help you live longer.
  • Reducing excess weight under clinical supervision is the realistic, evidence-based health goal to discuss with a prescriber.
  • If you meet the licensed criteria, a free consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Does GLP-1 treatment help you live longer?

Nobody can honestly promise that it does. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, and that is the use we supply it for.1 The medicine has not been licensed to slow ageing or add years to life.

A result in mice, or a change in a laboratory ageing marker, is not the same as a person living longer or staying healthier for longer. Those are different questions, and the second needs long-term human outcome data.

Carrying excess weight is a health issue that a prescriber can help you address, and tirzepatide has measured weight-loss results in a large trial. That is a defensible reason to consider treatment. "It might extend my life" is not.

02 · Your decision

Is this relevant to you?

It is relevant if your real question is whether treating excess weight is worth it for your long-term health. That question has a clear pathway: an assessment of whether you meet the licensed criteria, then a conversation about benefits, side effects and what happens if you stop.

It is not a good reason to start if you are a healthy adult without a weight concern and simply want an anti-ageing edge. The medicine is licensed for people who need it for weight management or diabetes, and a prescriber will judge suitability for you individually. Using a prescription medicine for a purpose it is not licensed for, based on social-media enthusiasm, takes on side effects without a recognised benefit.

If you are weighing up the longer-term picture, our guide to the Mounjaro longevity question and the page on the wider longevity angle cover the same debate.

03 · Next step

What to do next

Start with your goal. If it is managing weight, read how treatment works, what the trial evidence shows and what it asks of you in diet and activity. If you want to see whether you qualify, the Mounjaro pen page shows current prices and starts a free online consultation, reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

If you are not sure treatment is right, our weight loss clinic hub explains the options, including lifestyle support. There is no pressure either way, and speaking to your own GP is always reasonable.

04 · What GLP-1 medicines are

What GLP-1 medicines are

GLP-1 medicines are treatments that copy or enhance a natural gut hormone involved in appetite and blood sugar. The group includes semaglutide, sold as Wegovy for weight management, and liraglutide, which is a daily injection supplied at a concentration of 6mg/ml. Mounjaro belongs to the same wider family but acts a little differently.

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

Notice what is missing from that licence: any reference to lifespan, ageing or longevity. That absence matters. A licence reflects the uses a regulator has assessed and approved on the evidence supplied by the manufacturer. When a page describes a GLP-1 medicine as an anti-ageing drug, it is going beyond the licence and, usually, beyond the evidence.

It also helps to know that "GLP-1" is often used loosely online. People say it when they mean any weight-loss injection, and sometimes when they mean unregulated products sold without a prescription. Only a prescription medicine supplied by a registered pharmacy after a consultation should be treated as the real thing.

For any individual product, the patient information leaflet is the authoritative plain-language guide to who should and should not use it, how to inject, and what side effects to watch for.13 Reading it before you start is far more valuable than reading longevity commentary. It is written for patients, it is specific to the pen you will hold, and it is the document your prescriber expects you to have read.

In short, the label tells you what the medicine is for today. Anything beyond that is a research question, and research questions are answered over years, with large groups of people followed carefully, not by a viral post or a promising animal result.

05 · How Mounjaro works

How Mounjaro works

Mounjaro works by acting on two gut-hormone receptors, which changes appetite and how the body handles insulin. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).1

The longevity argument usually runs through a chain of reasoning: the medicine reduces appetite, appetite reduction resembles eating less, eating less is linked in animals to longer life, therefore the medicine might lengthen life. Each link is plausible as a hypothesis. None of them is a demonstrated human result for the medicine you could be prescribed. A chain of plausible steps is a reason to run studies, not a reason to make a promise.

It is also worth being clear that the mechanism supports a diet, rather than replacing one. The licensed use is alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.2 People who treat the pen as a shortcut and ignore nutrition, protein, movement and sleep are not following the model the evidence is based on.

Those looking at downstream physiology sometimes ask about heart rate variability, which our page on Mounjaro and HRV discusses, and about unusual organ-related questions, such as those covered in the Mounjaro and spleen guide. In each case the sensible approach is the same: separate what is documented from what is speculated, and bring any specific worry to your prescriber.

The practical takeaway is that the mechanism explains why weight falls, which is the measured effect. It does not, on its own, establish an effect on how long you live.

06 · What the trial evidence shows

What the trial evidence shows

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2

For a worked example, someone starting at 100 kg would see 20.9% as about 21 kg. That is straight arithmetic on the trial average, not a forecast for you.

Now consider what this does and does not tell you about longevity. The trial measured body weight over its duration. It was not designed to show whether participants lived longer than people not taking the drug.

Be wary of anyone who takes weight-loss percentages and presents them as anti-ageing results. They are not. Equally, be wary of anyone who compares figures across different trials as if the drugs had been tested head to head. Trial populations, durations and designs differ, so each result should be read on its own terms.

07 · Ageing research: what is hype

Ageing research: what is hype and what is evidence

Most longevity headlines about GLP-1 medicines come from animal experiments or from laboratory markers of ageing, and neither is proof that a person will live longer.

First, ask who or what was studied. A study in mice may be interesting for science, but mice live in controlled conditions, on controlled diets, for a short natural lifespan, and many findings in animals do not carry over to people. Second, ask what was measured. A change in an epigenetic or biological-age marker is an indicator, not an outcome. Researchers are still debating how well such markers predict real-world health. Third, ask whether the finding was in the licensed medicine at licensed doses in the group of people who would actually use it.

A fourth question is about the source. A clinic selling treatment has a commercial interest in the story sounding exciting.

None of this means the research is worthless. Scientists are right to investigate whether medicines in this class affect health beyond weight. It means the honest present position is "unproven", not "proven" and not "disproven". The wording that fits the evidence is that these are questions under investigation.

The product information describes the licensed uses.1 If a page tells you a prescription medicine will make you biologically younger, it has moved from reporting evidence to selling a hope. Treat that as a signal to read more carefully, not to buy more quickly.

If longevity is your motivation, the more reliable levers are well known and unglamorous: a healthy weight where that is a concern, regular movement, good sleep, not smoking, sensible alcohol intake and routine health checks with your GP.

08 · Weight, health and ideal weight

Weight, health and the question of ideal weight

There is no single ideal body weight for longevity. BMI is a screening tool used to judge eligibility for treatment, not a verdict on how long you will live.

BMI is calculated from height and weight and expressed in kg/m². Thresholds such as 27, 30, 35 and 40 appear in guidance and licensing, but they decide who may be offered a treatment, not what weight will give you a long life. The NICE recommendation, for example, concerns adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4

A prescriber assessing you will look at more than a number. They will consider your health history, current medicines and what you are hoping to achieve. That is why a consultation, rather than a calculator, decides suitability.

What the trial evidence adds is that, among adults in SURMOUNT-1, a large share lost a meaningful proportion of their body weight with treatment alongside diet and activity, while those on lifestyle changes alone lost much less.2 If excess weight is affecting your health, that is the benefit on the table.

It is also worth saying what weight loss is not. It is not a promise of a particular outcome for any individual, and trial averages do not predict your own result. Some people lose less than the average and some lose more. Whether the changes translate into a longer life is not established by these figures.

A more helpful goal than a perfect number is a sustainable one: a weight at which you feel well, your conditions are better controlled and you can keep up healthy habits. Set that with your prescriber or GP, and revisit it over time. If your aim is better day-to-day wellbeing, that is a more honest and more achievable target than a lifespan figure no one can promise.

09 · Safety, side effects and risks

Safety, side effects and potential dangers

Any medicine that changes how your body handles appetite and digestion carries side effects, and anyone considering one for longevity should weigh them honestly against the lack of an established longevity benefit. The authoritative, complete list for your pen is in the patient information leaflet, and we encourage you to read it before you start.13

The best preparation is practical. Read the leaflet, follow the pen's instructions for injecting, keep your prescriber informed about other medicines and health conditions, and use the support your pharmacy provides. Our team offers ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and side-effect support, so you are not left to work things out alone.

Because Mounjaro slows how quickly the stomach empties, digestive effects are a topic people raise. If you are curious about unusual sensations, our page on the gag reflex and Mounjaro addresses one such question directly. For any new or worrying symptom, speak to your prescriber, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19

Regulators also keep these medicines under review. For example, the European Medicines Agency's safety committee reviewed the evidence and concluded in 2024 that it does not support a causal link between GLP-1 medicines and suicidal thoughts, and the MHRA keeps this under continuous review.17

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, doses may need adjusting to avoid low blood sugar, and your prescriber will advise.

The honest summary on risk is that treatment has real benefits for the right person and real side effects for many. Taking it for an unproven anti-ageing purpose shifts that balance in the wrong direction.

10 · NHS and private access

NHS and private access

You can reach Mounjaro through the NHS or privately, and the right route depends on your eligibility and how long you are willing to wait. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions). Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.46

The NHS also publishes its own guidance on the medicine, which is a good neutral place to start reading.5 Speak to your GP if you think you may be in a group NHS services are prioritising. The NHS prescription charge in England is £9.90 per item, where it applies.

NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.

Privately, treatment is paid for directly. Our process is straightforward. You complete a free online consultation and a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Approved orders are dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.

A starting pen at 2.5mg has a standard price of £169.99 per month. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). Current prices were checked 11 October 2026, and the price shown is the price paid.

Our supply comes through official LillyDirect channels, directly from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, and we dispense genuine KwikPens. That matters because counterfeit and unregulated weight-loss products exist; the MHRA publishes alerts about them.7 Be cautious of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, and check any pharmacy on the GPhC register, ours is registration 9012878.12

Whichever route you choose, the reason should be your health need, not a longevity promise.

11 · Starting, stopping and long term

Starting, stopping and thinking long term

Planning costs matters as well. At standard prices, a first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less than the standard price.

Storage is simple. Keep pens in the fridge between 2–8°C and never freeze them; once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Unopened pens keep until the printed expiry date. Follow the pen's instructions for injecting.13

Stopping is part of the long-term picture. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system — there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 Research on continued treatment for maintaining weight reduction has been published as the SURMOUNT-4 study, and your prescriber can discuss what it means for your plans.14

For people thinking in terms of decades, the sensible frame is health maintenance. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and the habits you build while on it are what you carry forward.2 Our aftercare includes monthly reviews and follow-up assessments, repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping and no subscription lock-in. The free GLPTrackr app can help you log your progress.

When you are ready to see whether you qualify, begin on the Mounjaro pen page. This medicine is prescription-only, supplied after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary, and this page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

12 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Do GLP-1 medicines help you live longer?
This has not been established for the medicines available on prescription in the UK. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, not for extending lifespan. Animal studies and ageing-marker headlines are interesting research, but they are not proof that a person will live longer. If you want to improve long-term health, speak to a prescriber about whether treatment for weight is appropriate for you.
What are the benefits and side effects of taking GLP-1 medication?
The benefit with measured evidence is weight loss. In SURMOUNT-1, people on tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. Individual results vary. The most common side effects, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort, and they are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose. Report any suspected side effect to your prescriber and through the Yellow Card scheme.
Is metformin used to improve longevity?
Metformin is a separate diabetes medicine, and whether it suits you is a decision for your GP or prescriber. The same caution applies as for GLP-1 medicines: a licensed use is not the same as a proven lifespan benefit. Ask your prescriber about your own circumstances rather than relying on online claims.
What is the ideal body weight for longevity?
There is no single ideal body weight for longevity. Health depends on body composition, fitness, age, other conditions and family history. BMI, measured in kg/m², is used to judge eligibility for treatment, with thresholds such as 27, 30, 35 and 40 appearing in guidance, but it does not predict lifespan. A better goal is a weight you can sustain and at which your health is well managed. Agree that target with your prescriber or GP.
What are the reviews of GLP-1 drugs for weight loss?
In SURMOUNT-1 of 2,539 adults, tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise produced average weight loss of 15% on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages, individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.
What happens if you drink alcohol on GLP-1?
There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and alcohol adds calories that work against your goals. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. If you notice any unexpected symptoms after drinking while on treatment, speak to your prescriber, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
What do I need to know before starting GLP-1 treatment?
Know what the treatment is for, how it is used and what it asks of you. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and type 2 diabetes, is injected once weekly, and works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Read the patient information leaflet, tell your prescriber about your medicines and health history, and expect ongoing reviews rather than a one-off purchase.
What is the hard truth about GLP-1 medications?
The hard truth is that they are effective weight-management medicines, not proven anti-ageing treatments. The measured results are real, but they come with side effects, a need to change diet and activity, and a long-term commitment. Stopping means the medicine clears over roughly four to five weeks, and your habits then matter. Promises of dramatic transformation or extended lifespan go beyond the evidence. A prescriber can help you decide honestly whether the balance of benefit and risk suits you.
What happens the first time you take a GLP-1 injection?
You inject your starting dose using the pen, following the pen's instructions and the leaflet. Many people notice feeling fuller sooner and less hungry between meals. Side effects can occur, so know whom to contact. Our team provides side-effect support and monthly reviews, and you can report any suspected effect through the Yellow Card scheme.
