GLP-1 and GLP-2 are two different gut hormones, and only GLP-1-based medicines are licensed in the UK for weight management. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) acts on GLP-1 and GIP receptors, not GLP-2. "GLP-2 for weight loss" products sold online are not a licensed route for weight management.

What is the difference between GLP-1 and GLP-2?

They are different gut hormones. The GLP-1 pathway is the one used in licensed weight-loss and diabetes medicines. Tirzepatide is described as the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1

Is GLP-1 the same as Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It acts on GLP-1 and also on GIP, which distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).1

03 · Is GLP-2 good for weight loss?

Is GLP-2 licensed for weight loss?

No. There is no licensed GLP-2 weight-loss medicine in the UK, while licensed GLP-1-based treatments such as tirzepatide have trial data. In SURMOUNT-1, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages and individual results vary.2

04 · Buying peptides online

Can you buy peptides for weight loss over the counter?

Sellers advertise "GLP" peptides online, but a product offered without a consultation or prescription is not a regulated route. Such products may be counterfeit or unlicensed. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting suspected side effects.7

Your options in the UK

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.4 Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment instead.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary.

What is the difference between GLP-1 and GLP-2?

What are GLP-2 medications?
There is no licensed GLP-2 weight-loss medication in the UK, and we do not supply one. Ask your GP or a prescriber about any specific product. For weight management, the licensed options are GLP-1-based, such as Mounjaro and Wegovy.

If you have used one and feel unwell, speak to a healthcare professional and report it through the Yellow Card scheme. For severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, pain in the upper right abdomen, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing, get medical help straight away.
Is GLP-2 good for weight loss?
There is no licensed GLP-2 weight-loss medicine in the UK. Licensed GLP-1-based treatments have published trial results, such as SURMOUNT-1 for tirzepatide, where individual results vary.
Where can I buy a GLP-2 or GLP peptide safely?
For weight management, use a regulated UK pharmacy that supplies licensed medicines after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Avoid anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. You can check a pharmacy on the GPhC register.
What is the most trustworthy peptide company?
