GLP-1 Supplement vs Injection: What the Evidence Shows (October 2026)
A GLP-1 supplement and a GLP-1 injection are not like-for-like choices: injections such as Mounjaro and Wegovy are licensed medicines with large trials behind them, while "GLP-1 supplements" are not medicines and have no comparable trial evidence.2 A Mounjaro starting pen costs £169.99 per month at standard price. 01 · The short verdict
GLP-1 supplement vs injection: the verdict
If you want a treatment with proven, measured results, the choice is between licensed medicines, not between a supplement and an injection. Supplements are not a weaker version of an injection; they are a different category altogether. They are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence.20
An injection may suit you if you meet the licensed criteria for weight management. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg) are both effective, licensed once-weekly treatments. In the SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head trial, adults on tirzepatide lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on Wegovy.15 Which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice, not the headline number alone.
A licensed tablet may suit you if you would rather avoid injections. Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) and Foundayo (orforglipron) are now licensed in the UK, are prescription-only and have their own dosing and eligibility checks.2021 You can see current Wegovy prices on the Wegovy pen page.
A supplement suits you if you want a low-cost product and accept there is no clinical oversight and no trial-proven weight-loss result. We would not describe it as a substitute for either of the other two options.

Supplements, tablets and injections compared
| Factor | "GLP-1" supplements | Licensed GLP-1 tablets | Mounjaro / Wegovy injections |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Over-the-counter product, not a medicine | Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) and Foundayo (orforglipron) | Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) and semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy) |
| Licensed in the UK for weight loss | No | Yes: Wegovy tablets approved June 2026, Foundayo approved August 2026 | Yes, both |
| Prescription needed | No | Yes | Yes |
| Trial evidence | No comparable trial evidence | Own trials, not comparable with Mounjaro's results | SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head: 20.2% on tirzepatide vs 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy) over 72 weeks; individual results vary |

| Clinical oversight | None | Prescriber review | Prescriber review and ongoing reviews |
| Cost | Low-cost supplement, no clinical oversight | See current Wegovy tablet prices on the product page | Mounjaro starting pen £169.99 per month at standard price |
Trial results in the table come from different studies with different designs, so do not read them across the columns as a race. Only SURMOUNT-5 compares two medicines directly.15
03 · Deciding
The factors that should decide it
The first factor is evidence. Injections and tablets are licensed medicines with published trials; supplements are not, and nothing about "natural GLP-1" marketing changes that.20 The second is safety oversight. A prescriber checks that a medicine suits your health, your other medicines and your history. A supplement has no such step.
The third is convenience. A weekly injection means one decision per week, on the same day, at any time of day.1 A tablet may suit people who dislike needles. The fourth is cost. Your first 2.5mg Mounjaro pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), and every later order is £25 off the standard price. You can see all doses on the Mounjaro pen page.
If you are weighing up the delivery route itself rather than supplements, our injection versus oral comparison goes deeper on that question.
04 · What supplements are
What "GLP-1 supplements" actually are
A "GLP-1 supplement" is a marketing term, not a type of medicine. Products such as berberine are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence.20 They do not contain a GLP-1 receptor agonist, the drug class that Mounjaro and Wegovy belong to.
The names do a lot of the selling. "Nature's Ozempic" and "poor man's Ozempic" are labels sellers use to suggest a supplement does what a prescription medicine does. They do not. Ozempic itself is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes, and it is not a UK weight-loss medicine.18 A label borrowing its name tells you about the marketing, not the product.
Dosing is not standardised either, so two products with the same name can differ. Dramatic weight-loss claims on a supplement page are a warning sign. Our explainer on how these products are claimed to work and our berberine comparison cover the detail.
You may also come across supplement bundles or wonder where to buy them. Bundling several products does not add up to a licensed treatment. It adds up to several unregulated products, with no prescriber looking at the combination.
05 · How injections work
How GLP-1 injections work
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 Its active ingredient, tirzepatide, activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve how the body responds to insulin.1
In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. This dual action distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy).1 Wegovy is the licensed semaglutide option for weight management at the 2.4mg maintenance dose.18
Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg. Each pen contains four weekly doses.1 It is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. Licensed sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection. Rotate the site each time.13
Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every EverydayMeds order. Many people find the weekly routine easier than expected, because there is nothing to remember on the other six days.
06 · Do they work as well?
Do GLP-1 pills or supplements work as well as injections?
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20%.2 These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
For a worked example, someone starting at 100 kg would lose about 21 kg at the 20.9% trial average. That is arithmetic on a trial average, not a prediction for you.
In STEP 1, adults on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy) lost on average 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo.9 In SURMOUNT-5, the first large head-to-head trial, adults lost on average 20.2% on tirzepatide versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg over 72 weeks.15 Both are effective, licensed treatments.
Tablet trial results should not be set against Mounjaro's, because they are different medicines with their own studies and designs. Wegovy tablets and Foundayo each have their own product information, dosing and eligibility checks.2021 Your prescriber can explain which fits your situation.
07 · Speed of results
Which GLP-1 loses weight fastest, and how quickly?
No licensed GLP-1 works in days, and no supplement has evidence of working at all. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month.2
Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend rather than individual weigh-ins. Early loss includes water weight. Some people notice appetite change in week one, others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal.2
Your prescriber reviews your response. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, they will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.2
How to speed up weight loss safely
The safe levers are the ones in the licence: follow the dose ladder, keep to a reduced-calorie diet, increase physical activity and attend your reviews. Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg weekly, which is about letting your body adjust rather than weight loss. After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, then can step up by 2.5mg at minimum 4-week intervals to a maximum of 15mg. Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg, and higher is not automatically better.1
Do not stretch, split or spread doses to try to go faster or cheaper.
08 · Safety and stacking
Safety: why combining products is a mistake
Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed "research" peptides (such as retatrutide, which has no UK licence) or compounded copies. These combinations have no safety data and no regulated supply chain. If something promises faster results outside a licensed pathway, that is the warning sign.1
That also means you should never run two GLP-1 medicines together. If you are moving between licensed medicines, it is done under prescriber supervision. Typically the previous medicine is stopped, a washout interval is observed and Mounjaro is started at a dose your prescriber judges appropriate, often 2.5mg.1
Counterfeit and unregulated products are a real risk when buying outside a registered pharmacy. Check any pharmacy on the GPhC register, and be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.7 EverydayMeds is registered with the GPhC (9012878) and supplies Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution.
The commonest early effects of Mounjaro are mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection, and they usually settle.2 If you notice a new symptom, speak to your prescriber, and report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19
One interaction worth knowing is contraception: Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 If you take insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar.
09 · Tablets and alternatives
Tablets, orlistat and other licensed options
There is no tablet form of Mounjaro, because tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK. Two GLP-1 weight-loss tablets are now licensed: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk), approved by the MHRA in June 2026, and Foundayo (orforglipron, made by Eli Lilly), approved in August 2026.2021 Both are prescription-only and are different medicines from Mounjaro.
Orlistat is a tablet that blocks some dietary fat absorption and produces smaller average losses. Wegovy and Saxenda (liraglutide) are other licensed injectables. Wegovy is once weekly, with pens of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg, stepping up after at least 4 weeks to reach 2.4mg from week 17. Liraglutide is a daily injection supplied at 6mg per millilitre.
The pills with evidence are prescription medicines, and the choice between them depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice. For a wider look at the options, see all weight loss treatments.
10 · NHS and private access
NHS and private access
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
If you go private, the process is straightforward. First, you complete a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no obligation. Second, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it; payment is taken when you place the order, and if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Third, our registered pharmacy dispenses and dispatches the same day when ordered by 3pm, with free next-day tracked delivery in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging.
You can start your free consultation when you are ready. A new-customer discount applies to first orders and a reorder discount to every future order, with current values shown live on the page. Payment options include Visa, Mastercard and Klarna, with no subscriptions, and ongoing monthly reviews are included. The free GLPTrackr app can help you track your journey.
11 · Cost over a year
Planning the cost of an injection
A supplement is a low-cost product with no clinical oversight, so comparing its sticker price with a medicine is not a fair test. For Mounjaro, plan around the dose you will settle on. If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg.
Those totals are before discounts: a new customer's first order is £40 less with code FIRST40, and every later order is £25 less (code DOSE25). Prices are checked and dated, and the price shown is the price paid.
If you settle on a middle dose, the monthly standard prices are £279.99 for 7.5mg, £290.99 for 10mg and £319.99 for 12.5mg.
12 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
