Do GLP-1 Supplements Work? An Honest UK Answer (October 2026)

GLP-1 supplements do not work like prescribed GLP-1 medicines. They are not equivalents and not substitutes for treatment, and they do not activate the same hormone receptors in a licensed, tested way. Licensed options such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide) have trial evidence behind them; supplements sold as natural boosters do not. Prescribed treatment is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Supplements sold as "natural GLP-1 boosters" are not equivalents and not substitutes for prescribed treatment.
  • Prescribed GLP-1 medicines have named trials; supplements do not have comparable evidence.
  • Dosing of supplements is not standardised, and there is no clinical oversight.
  • No supplement is required with Mounjaro; a standard multivitamin is a reasonable safety net.
  • A GPhC-registered prescriber can tell you whether a licensed treatment suits you.

01 · The core answer

Do GLP-1 supplements work?

No, not in the way the label implies. Supplements marketed as "natural GLP-1 boosters" are not equivalents of prescribed treatment and are not substitutes for it.13 Dramatic weight-loss claims on these products are not backed by the kind of trials that licensed medicines go through.

By contrast, in the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages and individual results vary.2 Nothing comparable exists for supplements.

02 · What to do

What to do instead

If you are weighing up options, a licensed route is the realistic one. Our weight loss clinic explains who treatment suits, and the Mounjaro pen page has live prices and a free consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. If you are comparing supplement types, see whether they work for weight loss, or look at natural versions and booster products.

03 · How real GLP-1s work

How prescribed GLP-1 medicines work

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1

That is a defined pharmacological action in a tested product. A supplement that merely contains a plant extract does not replicate it. For the oral licensed tablets, see our guide to how Foundayo works.

04 · Supplements and treatment

Supplements alongside treatment

No supplement is required with Mounjaro, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight. Discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist.13

Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.13 If you are curious about pills in general, read whether oral supplements work.

05 · Realistic expectations

What realistic results look like

Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest; most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days.2

Any product promising fast, dramatic change should be treated with caution. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

06 · Buying safely

Buying safely

Be wary of anyone offering to supply a prescription GLP-1 medicine without a consultation or prescription. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting side effects.7 Our pharmacy is GPhC-registered (9012878), and Mounjaro comes via official LillyDirect supply. For supplement shopping questions, see where people buy them.

07 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What is the closest supplement to GLP-1?
No supplement is a close equivalent. Products sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment. If you want the effect of a GLP-1 medicine, the realistic route is a licensed treatment reviewed by a prescriber.
Are there any natural GLP-1 boosters?
Products are sold under that name, but they are not equivalents of prescribed treatment. There is no tested, standardised natural product that does what a licensed medicine does. Our guide to supplements that claim to work goes into more detail.
Does taking GLP-1 orally work?
Some licensed GLP-1 tablets exist, such as Wegovy tablets and Foundayo, and are described in their product information. That is different from over-the-counter supplements, which are not licensed medicines.
Is GLP-1 the same as Mounjaro?
No. GLP-1 is a natural gut hormone. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide. It is a once-weekly prescription injection.
What is the most successful weight loss supplement?
No supplement has trial results comparable to licensed medicines. In SURMOUNT-1, tirzepatide users lost on average 15% to 20.9% of body weight depending on dose over 72 weeks, versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. Individual results vary.
Who cannot take GLP-1?
You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive; stop it at least one month before trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.
What medications interact badly with GLP-1?
Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, doses may need adjusting because of low blood sugar risk. Tell your prescriber about every medicine and supplement you use.
Where can I buy GLP-1 pills?
Licensed GLP-1 medicines are prescription-only and supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Be cautious of sellers offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. Check the pharmacy on the GPhC register.
