GLP-1 Release: What It Is and What Can Influence It (October 2026)

GLP-1 release is your body's natural secretion of a gut hormone that helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties.1 No food or supplement reproduces what a licensed GLP-1 medicine does. Medicines such as Mounjaro act on the same receptor pathway.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • GLP-1 is a natural gut hormone; its release is part of normal appetite regulation.
  • No food or supplement reproduces what a licensed GLP-1 medicine does.
  • Mounjaro activates GLP-1 and GIP receptors together, which is why it differs from single-action medicines.
  • Mounjaro does not leave the body instantly: tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear after a final dose.
  • Anyone considering treatment should have a prescriber review rather than relying on food claims.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Is natural GLP-1 release something you can control?

Only in a limited way. GLP-1 is one of the natural gut-hormone signals involved in appetite and in how fast the stomach empties.2 Your body releases it as part of normal digestion, and you cannot dial it up on demand.

You will see claims online that eggs, berries or particular meals "stimulate GLP-1 release". If you want to explore the topic, our guides on what foods release GLP-1 and GLP-1 and eggs cover it in more detail.

What matters for a person deciding what to do is the gap in scale. Eating well supports health and is the foundation of any weight plan. It is not the same as taking a medicine designed to act on the receptor directly.

02 · What to do next

What should you do if you want more than diet alone?

Speak to a prescriber about whether a licensed medicine is appropriate. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1 It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.

The Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 per month at the 2.5mg dose (standard price, checked 10 October 2026). You can also read our wider weight loss clinic overview.

03 · What GLP-1 does

What GLP-1 does in the body

GLP-1 is a natural gut hormone, and its receptor is one of the targets of Mounjaro. Activating it, together with the GIP receptor, helps regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.2

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.2

04 · What triggers release

What triggers GLP-1 release?

GLP-1 release is part of normal digestion.

If you want to read around the subject, see what triggers GLP-1 release, what naturally stimulates GLP-1 and whether you can stimulate GLP-1 naturally. Treat any page promising a dramatic effect from one ingredient with caution.

05 · Foods versus medicines

Foods versus GLP-1 medicines

A food-based approach is low-risk and sensible for general health, but it does not do what licensed medicines do. Supplements marketed as "natural GLP-1 boosters" are available cheaply without assessment, with no clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised.

Licensed medicines are different because they are tested and dosed. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary.

For more on practical eating, see foods to stimulate GLP-1.

06 · Medicines that act on GLP-1

The main GLP-1 medicines in the UK

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injectable medicine made by Eli Lilly, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).2

Wegovy is semaglutide, a once-weekly pen with a dose ladder of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg. Liraglutide (Saxenda) is a daily injection supplied at 6mg/ml.

07 · NHS access

NHS access to GLP-1 medicines

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

08 · Stopping treatment

What happens when GLP-1 treatment stops

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.2

Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load. Talk to your prescriber before stopping so you can plan together. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average. Our team provides ongoing monthly reviews, and repeat orders re-check suitability.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What triggers a GLP-1 release?
GLP-1 release is part of normal digestion, and the body does it without conscious effort. If you want more appetite support than diet gives, a prescriber can discuss licensed options with you.
Do eggs or berries stimulate GLP-1 release?
Claims that eggs, berries or other single foods stimulate GLP-1 release are common online. They can be part of a balanced diet, but no food reproduces what a licensed GLP-1 medicine does.
Which are the main GLP-1 medicines?
In the UK the licensed options include Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy (semaglutide) and liraglutide (Saxenda). Mounjaro activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, whereas semaglutide and liraglutide are single-action GLP-1 medicines. Mounjaro and Wegovy are once-weekly pens; liraglutide is a daily injection. A prescriber can advise which suits you.
What is the new GLP-1 pill coming out?
GLP-1 tablets exist, including oral semaglutide (Wegovy tablets) and orforglipron (Foundayo). They are different medicines from Mounjaro, with their own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results, and both are prescription-only.
Who should avoid GLP-1 medicines?
You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Our free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically. Always tell the prescriber about every medicine you take. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed: switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
What happens when you go off GLP-1?
The medicine does not leave your body instantly. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days and takes roughly four to five weeks to clear after a final dose, and nothing needs doing while it clears. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average. Discuss stopping with your prescriber first so you can plan what comes next.
Does GLP-1 remove plaque from arteries?
GLP-1 medicines are licensed here for weight management and type 2 diabetes only. If you have heart or circulation concerns, speak to your GP or cardiologist rather than relying on a general statement from the internet.
Is it worth trying to boost GLP-1 naturally before a medicine?
Eating well is sensible whatever you decide, and it is also the foundation of treatment, since medicines work alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Food alone does not reproduce what licensed medicines do, so if you meet the criteria and want more support, ask a prescriber about your options.
