Foods to Stimulate GLP-1: What the Evidence Supports (October 2026)
The foods most often linked with GLP-1 release are protein-rich foods, high-fibre foods such as oats, beans and lentils, and foods with healthy fats such as olive oil and nuts. Food can nudge your own gut hormones, but the effect is far smaller than a prescribed GLP-1 medicine, and no food replaces treatment.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Protein, soluble fibre and healthy fats are the food groups most often linked with natural GLP-1 release.
-
The effect of food is modest and short-lived, far less than the licensed medicines.
-
Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents to prescribed treatment.
-
Eating more protein and fibre is still sensible, because it helps fullness and muscle protection.
-
If you want a medicine-level effect, a clinician-reviewed consultation is the proper route.
In this guide
01 · The short answer
Which foods stimulate GLP-1?
Foods that digest slowly and keep you full are the best-supported candidates: protein sources, soluble fibre and healthy fats. These are the same foods dietitians already recommend for fullness, so there is no need to chase an exotic list.
Whether a particular food boosts it more than another, and for how long, is much less certain than internet lists suggest. For more on the topic, see our guide on whether you can stimulate it naturally and our explainer on how GLP-1 production works.
| Food group | Examples | Why it is discussed | How strong is the case? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protein | Fish, poultry, eggs, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, tofu | Digested into amino acids that gut cells respond to; also helps fullness and muscle | Reasonable for fullness; hormone effect is modest |
| Soluble fibre | Oats, barley, beans, lentils, chickpeas | Slowly digested and good for fullness and gut health | Good for fullness and gut health; any hormone effect is uncertain |
| Healthy fats | Olive oil, avocado, nuts, oily fish | Often named on lists of GLP-1 foods | Nutritious, but calorie-dense, so portions matter |
| Fermented foods | Yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut | Often named on lists of GLP-1 foods | Early evidence, so treat as a bonus |
| Supplements | Berberine and so-called GLP-1 boosters | Heavily marketed | Low-cost supplement, no clinical oversight; not equivalent to medicine |
02 · Your next step
Is a food-first approach enough for you?
For some people, yes. If you want to improve fullness and eating habits, building meals around protein, fibre and vegetables is a sound start. It costs little and carries no medical risk for most adults.
If you have tried this and still struggle with appetite, a licensed medicine is a different category of tool. Mounjaro, for example, activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors directly, which is not something a meal can match.1 If you meet the criteria, you can read about the Mounjaro pen, which has a standard price of £169.99 per month at the 2.5mg starting dose, or explore our wider weight loss clinic.
03 · Protein foods
Protein foods and GLP-1
Protein is the most practical food group to build around, mainly because it keeps you full. Fish, chicken, turkey, eggs, dairy, tofu and pulses all count. Many people find protein-led meals reduce the urge to snack.
Egg whites get particular attention online. We cover that in our guide to egg whites and GLP-1, but the short version is that eggs are a convenient protein source, not a hormone switch.
If you are on a GLP-1 medicine, protein has a second job. Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and a protein source at every meal, together with resistance exercise on a regular weekly basis, helps protect muscle. This matters more as appetite falls and doses rise.
04 · Fibre and legumes
Wholegrains, lentils and legumes
Soluble fibre is the second pillar, and the foods are familiar: oats, barley, beans, lentils, chickpeas and other legumes.
The sensible takeaway is that these foods are good for fullness, blood sugar steadiness and digestion, whatever their exact hormone effect.
Introduce fibre gradually. Adding a lot suddenly can cause bloating, and on a slower-emptying stomach it can feel uncomfortable. Vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts fit here too, and our guidance for people on treatment is to prioritise vegetables and fibre.
05 · Fats and fermented foods
Healthy fats, fermented foods and fenugreek
Healthy fats such as olive oil, avocado, nuts and oily fish are often named as GLP-1 foods. They are nutritious, but they are also calorie-dense, so portion size decides whether they help or work against a calorie deficit.
Fermented foods such as live yoghurt, kefir and sauerkraut are linked with gut health, and the evidence for a direct GLP-1 effect is still early. Fenugreek (methi) appears on many lists too. Evidence for it is limited, and anything concentrated into a supplement should be discussed with a pharmacist first.
For a fuller meal-planning view, our pages on a natural GLP-1 diet and foods that boost it go through practical meals, and foods that trigger release covers the same ground from a different angle.
06 · Supplements and hype
Natural GLP-1 boosters and supplements
Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment.13 They are typically a low-cost supplement with no clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised. Be sceptical of dramatic weight-loss claims and of any seller offering to supply a prescription medicine without a consultation or prescription.
No supplement is required with Mounjaro. Eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight, and anything beyond that is worth discussing with a pharmacist.13 Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.
07 · Food versus medicine
Food versus a GLP-1 medicine
Eating well supports your own GLP-1 signalling; a medicine acts on the receptors directly and for far longer.
Tirzepatide activates both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which together help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 It is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so food still matters on treatment. Our related guide on diets that target the same hormone explains the comparison further.
08 · Eating on treatment
What to eat if you are already on treatment
No food is banned on Mounjaro, but some choices make treatment easier. Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly, so smaller, slower meals work better.
Drinking enough matters more than usual, because reduced appetite means less fluid from food. If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away. Coffee and tea are fine, although strong coffee on an empty stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux, and high-calorie coffee drinks are an easy place for the calorie deficit to leak.
Activity counts too: regular moderate movement such as brisk walking, plus resistance work for muscle, is part of the licence rather than an optional extra. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes
Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
