A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Hair shedding is a recognised, common side effect of Mounjaro, and it is linked to rapid weight loss rather than a direct drug effect.
  • For most people shedding settles as weight stabilises, so it is usually temporary rather than permanent.
  • Balanced nutrition, protein especially, matters while you are eating less on treatment.
  • Tell your prescriber if shedding is distressing, patchy or not settling, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Do weight loss drugs cause hair loss?

They can be associated with it, but not in the way most people fear. Temporary hair shedding is a recognised side effect of Mounjaro, reported as common in trials and linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.1 In other words, the shedding tracks how fast and how much weight changes, not a toxic action of the medicine on the hair follicle.

Hair shedding is listed among the common effects: common effects (up to 1 in 10) include indigestion, reduced appetite, dizziness, reflux, burping, hair shedding and injection-site reactions.1 It is not a serious or dangerous effect, though it can be upsetting.

The trial numbers help put it in proportion. Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1 So most people did not report it. A small minority did, and it was more frequent than on placebo. Our other guides go deeper on whether Mounjaro causes hair loss and on weight loss injections more broadly.

02 · Your decision

Is this relevant to me, and what should I do?

It is relevant if you are considering treatment, already on it, or noticing more hair in the brush or shower drain. If you are considering treatment, hair shedding should be one item on a balanced list of possible effects, not a reason to rule treatment out. Most side effects of Mounjaro are digestive, and hair shedding is far less common than nausea or diarrhoea.

If you are already on treatment and shedding, the practical response is calm and fairly simple: keep your meals balanced, make sure you are eating enough protein, avoid pushing for maximum speed of weight loss, and tell your prescriber. For most people shedding settles as weight stabilises.13 If it does not settle, is patchy, or comes with other symptoms, ask your prescriber or GP to look at it rather than assuming the medicine is the only possible cause.

If you are weighing up treatment, you can read about our weight loss clinic and how a prescriber-led review works. The free consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and ongoing monthly reviews are included, which is where side effects like this can be talked through.

03 · Why shedding happens

Why do weight loss drugs cause hair loss?

The honest answer is that the shedding is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.1 Tirzepatide helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties, so most people feel fuller sooner and eat less. A sizeable change in body weight and food intake is a significant change for the body to absorb, and hair can reflect that.

Nutrition matters here: protein intake and overall nutrition matter, which is another reason the reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced.13 Eating much less is the intended effect of the medicine, but eating badly while eating less is not. A smaller plate still needs to carry protein and a variety of foods.

This framing also explains why people on very different weight loss routes report similar experiences. If the trigger is the pace of weight change, then diet, surgery and medicines can all be followed by shedding. It is not a sign that the medicine is damaging you, and it is not a sign that the medicine is not working.

04 · How common is it

How common is hair loss on Mounjaro?

It is common but affects a minority. Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1 That means the great majority of people in those trials did not report hair loss at all.

The comparison with placebo matters, and it is worth reading honestly. The placebo group also lost some hair and reported it, which shows that background shedding happens in any group of adults. But the tirzepatide group reported it more often, consistent with it being a recognised effect of treatment and the weight loss that comes with it.

First, trial figures describe groups, and they do not predict your own experience. If you are on Wegovy or another weight loss medicine, the right place to check is that product's own patient information leaflet. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label.

For context, hair shedding sits in the same band of common effects as indigestion, reduced appetite and dizziness. By contrast, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort are the more frequent effects. If you want to know how those compare, see our guide on whether all weight loss drugs cause nausea.

05 · Will it grow back

Does hair loss from weight loss drugs grow back?

For most people, yes: the shedding is described as temporary and it settles as weight stabilises.13 Because the cause is linked to the pace of weight change, the shedding is expected to ease once your weight stops falling quickly, for example when you reach a maintenance dose and your prescriber helps you hold your weight steady.

People vary, and hair grows slowly, so any recovery is gradual and may be hard to spot at first. Taking photos in the same light every few weeks is a less stressful way to judge progress than checking the plughole daily.

Hair that does not settle deserves attention. See your GP or prescriber if shedding continues once your weight has stabilised, if you notice bald patches, if your scalp is sore or scaly, or if you have other symptoms such as marked tiredness. Hair thinning has many causes that are unrelated to medicines, and a clinician can look for those.

You can also report any suspected side effect, including hair loss, through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Reports help regulators keep watching the safety of these medicines. Our related guide on GLP-1 medicines and hair loss covers the wider drug class.

06 · Reducing the risk

How to reduce hair shedding on a weight loss drug

The evidence-based levers are about pace and nutrition, not products. Since the shedding is linked to rapid weight loss itself, the most useful step is avoiding chasing maximum speed. Mounjaro uses a gradual dose ladder partly to help your body adapt, and if a dose is hard to tolerate, prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up.13 Your pace should be guided by your prescriber.

Second, keep nutrition balanced. Protein intake and overall nutrition matter.13 In practice that means building meals around a protein source, adding vegetables and whole grains, and not skipping meals simply because you feel less hungry. When the appetite is low, small, regular, nutrient-dense meals do more than occasional large ones.

Third, protect lean mass. The same measures recommended for facial volume and loose skin apply here: adequate protein, resistance exercise, and a pace of loss guided by your prescriber.13 These steps support the body generally.

Fourth, manage the digestive effects that can make eating harder. Eat smaller meals slowly, stop at the first feeling of fullness, favour plain lower-fat foods while adjusting, and stay well hydrated.13 If nausea or vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs prompt attention.

Finally, speak up early. Our prescribing team offers side-effect support and monthly reviews, and repeat orders re-check suitability, so there is a natural point to raise shedding rather than quietly worrying.

07 · Shampoo and vitamins

What about shampoo, vitamins and supplements?

Few of them separate marketing from evidence.

Balanced nutrition and adequate protein matter more than any bottle. A low-cost supplement, taken without clinical oversight, is not a substitute for eating properly, and dosing of supplements is not standardised. If you suspect your diet is lacking something, a pharmacist or your GP can discuss whether a check or a supplement is sensible for you.

Be cautious about products that promise dramatic regrowth. If a seller offers to supply a hair treatment or any prescription medicine without a consultation or prescription, walk away. Genuine prescription treatments for hair loss are supplied after a proper assessment, and we are a full UK online pharmacy that also offers hair loss treatments, reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

Gentle hair care costs nothing: avoid tight hairstyles, harsh heat and aggressive brushing while hair is shedding.

08 · Other causes to rule out

When hair loss may not be the medicine

Not every case of thinning during treatment is caused by the medicine, and it helps to keep an open mind. Hair loss is common in adults generally, for many reasons unrelated to weight loss drugs. Starting treatment means you are looking more closely at your appearance and your body, and you may notice shedding that was already happening.

Patterns worth discussing with a clinician include a receding or widening parting that develops slowly, distinct bald patches, a sore or flaky scalp, and shedding that continues well after your weight has levelled off. These do not fit the description of temporary shedding linked to rapid weight loss, and they deserve a proper look.

Hormonal changes, illness, stress and other medicines can all play a part, and they are best assessed by someone who knows your history. Tell your prescriber about every medicine you take and any recent illness. If you are female and concerned, the same applies: raise it with your GP or prescriber so the full picture is considered, rather than relying on guesswork.

It is also sensible to separate hair from other changes people attribute to weight loss drugs. Facial hollowing, often called Ozempic face, is not a drug effect but what losing a significant amount of weight quickly can do to facial volume on any method, including diet or surgery.13 Our wider guides cover hair loss and weight loss drugs and weight loss medication more generally.

09 · Weighing up the trade-off

Weighing hair shedding against the benefits of treatment

Hair shedding is one possible effect to weigh against the reasons you are considering treatment, and it is usually temporary. Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Most side effects follow a pattern: they appear in the first days after starting or increasing a dose, peak early and settle as your body adapts. Hair shedding behaves a little differently, because it is tied to weight change rather than to each injection, but the principle of a gradual approach is the same. Going slowly, eating well and keeping in touch with your clinical team gives the best chance of a comfortable experience.

Remember that stopping suddenly is not a remedy. After a final dose, tirzepatide takes four to five weeks to clear the system, and nothing needs doing while it clears. If you are considering stopping because of hair shedding, talk to your prescriber first; stopping should always be planned with your prescriber.

Access is also part of the decision. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.4 Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Whichever route you take, make sure the supplier is a registered pharmacy; ours is GPhC 9012878, with official LillyDirect supply and genuine KwikPens. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

10 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can weight loss drugs cause hair loss?
Yes, temporary hair shedding is a recognised side effect of Mounjaro, reported as common in trials. It is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect. In the weight-management trials, hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide, compared with 1.0% on placebo. For most people it settles as weight stabilises.
Can Mounjaro cause hair thinning?
Mounjaro can be followed by temporary hair shedding, which the product information lists among its common effects. It is linked to rapid weight loss rather than a direct drug effect. Most people do not experience it, and for those who do it generally settles as weight stabilises. If thinning is patchy or persists, ask your prescriber or GP to assess it.
Does hair loss from weight loss drugs grow back?
For Mounjaro, shedding linked to rapid weight loss generally settles as weight stabilises, so hair is expected to recover for most people. If shedding continues after your weight levels off, speak to your GP or prescriber.
How to stop hair loss from rapid weight loss?
You cannot fully control it, but you can reduce the trigger. Avoid chasing maximum speed and let your prescriber guide your pace. Keep nutrition balanced, with adequate protein, and stay hydrated. Resistance exercise also helps protect lean mass.
How to grow hair back after weight loss?
For most people hair recovers by itself as weight stabilises, so the focus is on steady nutrition, adequate protein and patience. If hair has not recovered once your weight is stable, or you notice bald patches, see your GP or prescriber to look for other causes.
What vitamins help with hair loss?
What the guidance supports is balanced nutrition and adequate protein while eating less. Supplement dosing is not standardised, so ask a pharmacist or your GP whether a supplement or blood check is appropriate for you.
What shampoo is recommended for GLP-1 hair loss?
The shedding is linked to rapid weight loss itself, which a shampoo cannot change. Gentle hair care avoids extra breakage, but nutrition, a sensible pace of weight loss and time matter more. A pharmacist can advise on products.
How to stop hair loss from a GLP-1 as a woman?
The approach is the same for women and men: keep meals balanced with adequate protein, avoid maximum-speed weight loss, and discuss your dose pace with your prescriber. If thinning is persistent, patchy or distressing, ask your GP or prescriber to assess other possible causes. You can also report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
