GLP-1 Capsules in the UK: What They Are and What Is Real (October 2026)
GLP-1 capsules sold online are supplements, not licensed GLP-1 medicines. The licensed GLP-1 treatments in the UK are prescription-only injections, such as the Mounjaro pen and Wegovy, plus two newer once-daily tablets, Wegovy tablets and Foundayo. None of them is a capsule you can buy over the counter. Current as of October 2026.

01 · The short answer
Are GLP-1 capsules real, and what should you do instead?
No licensed GLP-1 capsule exists in the UK, so products sold under that name are not the same as prescription GLP-1 medicines. A real GLP-1 medicine is prescription-only, has a published licence, a patient information leaflet and trial results. Capsules marketed as "GLP-1 boost", "GLP-1 activate" or "GLP-1 gel capsules" have none of these. They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and the label wording is marketing rather than a medicine licence.
It helps to be clear about what the licensed options are. Tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro, is a once-weekly injection. There is no tablet form of Mounjaro. Two GLP-1 weight-loss tablets are now licensed in the UK: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk), approved by the MHRA in June 2026, and Foundayo (orforglipron, made by Eli Lilly), approved in August 2026.2021 Other licensed options are Wegovy and Saxenda (liraglutide) injections, and orlistat tablets.
| Product type | Is it a licensed medicine? | Form | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| "GLP-1 capsules", gel capsules, boost or activate capsules | No, supplement | Capsule | No comparable trial evidence; dosing is not standardised |
| "Natural GLP-1" products such as berberine | No, not a medicine | Capsule or tablet | Not regulated for this use; low-cost supplement, no clinical oversight |
| Wegovy tablets | Yes, prescription-only | Once-daily tablet | OASIS 4 trial |
| Foundayo (orforglipron) | Yes, prescription-only | Once-daily tablet | ATTAIN-1 trial |
| Mounjaro (tirzepatide) | Yes, prescription-only | Once-weekly injection | SURMOUNT trials |
| Wegovy (semaglutide) | Yes, prescription-only | Once-weekly injection | STEP 1 trial |
Supplement capsules cost little and need no assessment, which is exactly why they are risky: nobody checks whether they suit you, what else you take, or whether they do anything. Our guides on whether GLP-1 capsules work and whether GLP-1 capsules are safe look at each question.
02 · Your next step
The two decisions most readers face
The first decision is whether a medicine is relevant to you at all. Licensed GLP-1 treatments are for adults who meet specific criteria. For the tablets, that means a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.20 For Mounjaro, NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition on the NHS pathway.4 If you are below those thresholds, a capsule will not change the picture; a conversation with a pharmacist or GP about diet, activity and other support is the sensible route.
The second decision is which licensed form fits your life. Some people prefer a daily tablet; others prefer a single injection each week. Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection; Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are once-daily tablets. A prescriber will check which option is suitable for your health, your other medicines and your routine.1 You do not need to decide alone, and you do not need to pay anything to start: our consultation is free, and a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
If you want the injection route, our weight loss clinic explains the process, and the Mounjaro pen prices and consultation page shows live prices. A new customer's first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), and every later order is £25 off the standard price. All six doses are in stock.
Whatever you choose, treat a supplement as a supplement. It is not a cheaper version of a prescription medicine, and it is not a stepping stone to one. If your aim is weight management with clinical support, start with an assessment rather than a capsule.
03 · What capsules actually are
What are GLP-1 capsules?
GLP-1 capsules are, in almost every case, dietary supplements sold online with names such as "GLP-1 boost", "GLP-1 activate", "GLP-1 gel capsules" or "high strength GLP-1 weight loss capsules". They are not GLP-1 medicines. A GLP-1 medicine is a prescription product that copies or stimulates a natural gut hormone, and it has been through clinical trials, a regulator's review and a published licence. A supplement capsule has done none of that.
The wording matters because it blurs a line. GLP-1 is the name of a hormone and of a whole class of licensed medicines. A seller can print "GLP-1" on a pot of capsules, and it may sound as though the product works the same way. It does not follow. The licensed medicines are carefully manufactured, dose-controlled and prescribed after a health assessment. Supplement capsules typically contain plant extracts, fibres or vitamins, and the amount in each capsule is not set by any clinical standard.
"Natural GLP-1" supplements, such as berberine, are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence.20 You may see dramatic weight-loss claims on product pages, but they do not come from the sort of trials that sit behind licensed treatments.
Supplements also carry a practical problem: no one reviews whether they suit you. A prescriber asks about your medical history, your other medicines and your goals. A website selling capsules asks for your payment details. For anyone with a health condition, taking regular medication, or planning a pregnancy, that gap is not trivial.
You may also see "GLP-1 liquid capsules" or "super evolution" style names. They follow the same pattern: an appealing label and no licence. Our pages on GLP-1 liquid capsules and GLP-1 super evolution capsules look at how those names are used. If a page promises specific results, a quick, effortless outcome or "the same as the injections", treat that as a warning sign rather than a selling point.
None of this means every capsule is dangerous. It means a capsule cannot be presented honestly as a replacement for a licensed GLP-1 treatment. When you read a product page, ask three simple questions. Is it licensed as a medicine in the UK? Has a prescriber reviewed my suitability? Is there published trial evidence for this exact product? If the answer to any of them is no, it is not what the name suggests.
One more point on language: "capsule" and "tablet" are often used loosely online. A licensed GLP-1 tablet is a film-coated tablet taken once a day. It is not a capsule, and it is not sold over the counter.
04 · Licensed GLP-1 medicines
Which GLP-1 medicines are licensed in the UK?
The licensed GLP-1 weight-management options in the UK are injections and, now, tablets. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg. Wegovy (semaglutide) is another once-weekly injection, with a dose ladder of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg, stepping up after at least four weeks and reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.18
Liraglutide, sold as Saxenda, is supplied at 6mg/ml and is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. Orlistat is a tablet that works differently: it blocks some dietary fat absorption and produces smaller average losses. Each of these has its own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results, and each is prescription-only or pharmacist-supplied under defined rules.
Two GLP-1 tablets have arrived recently. Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk) were approved by the MHRA in June 2026, and Foundayo (orforglipron, made by Eli Lilly) was approved in August 2026.2021 They are different medicines from Mounjaro, with their own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results, and both are prescription-only.
They have named active ingredients, set dose steps, listed side effects and published trials. You can read the leaflet. You can report a suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19 A prescriber is accountable for the decision to start you on them.
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.6 NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP. That is why many adults who meet the licensed criteria look at regulated private treatment.
For comparison purposes, prices for our own Mounjaro pen are shown live on the product page, and the starting pen is £169.99 at the standard price. Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens ranged from £143.96 to £339.00 per month across all doses as of 11 October 2026, so it is worth comparing like with like.
In short, the real GLP-1 choices are a weekly injection or a daily tablet. If you see a capsule claiming to be a third category, it is a supplement.
05 · Wegovy tablets
Wegovy tablets: the licensed daily GLP-1 pill
Wegovy tablets are the closest licensed product to what many people mean by a GLP-1 pill. They contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, taken as one tablet once a day.20 They are licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.
The dose ladder is gradual. Treatment starts at 1.5mg once daily and steps up to 4mg, 9mg and then the 25mg maintenance dose, with at least one month at each dose; the dose can stay at an earlier step if needed.20 That flexibility matters, because tolerability differs between people, and a prescriber can hold you at a step that suits you rather than pushing on.
The routine is the main practical hurdle. The tablet must be taken on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, swallowed whole with a sip of water (up to half a glass, about 120ml), and you then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other tablets.20 For some people that is easy to build into a morning; for others it is a daily friction. If a dose is missed, skip it and take the next tablet the following day. People on the 2.4mg weekly Wegovy injection can move to the 25mg tablet, starting one week after their last injection.
In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo.22 Individual results vary, and trial averages do not predict your own result. This figure should not be set against Mounjaro trial figures as if the two were head to head, because the trials involved different people, durations and doses.
Side effects are mostly digestive. The most common side effects are digestive — nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and stomach pain — along with headache and tiredness; gallstones and hair loss are listed as common.22 Your prescriber will talk through what to expect and what to do if symptoms are troublesome.
Who should think about tablets? People who dislike needles may find them appealing, and those who already have a settled morning routine may find the fasting window manageable. People who struggle with strict timing, or who take other tablets in the morning, may find the weekly injection easier. Neither is better in the abstract; the right one is the one you can follow consistently under clinical guidance.
Wegovy tablets are not sold over the counter and are not a capsule. If you are weighing them against a weekly injection, our weight loss clinic page explains how a prescriber review works, and the Wegovy pen page covers the injectable form.
06 · Foundayo
Foundayo (orforglipron): a different kind of daily tablet
Foundayo is the other licensed GLP-1 tablet, and its rules for taking it are simpler. It contains orforglipron, a once-daily GLP-1 tablet made by Eli Lilly, the maker of Mounjaro.21 Unlike Wegovy tablets it can be taken at any time of day, with or without food and without water restrictions; the tablet is swallowed whole.
It is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. Treatment starts at 0.8mg once daily, then steps up to 2.5mg and 5.5mg, and then to 9mg, 14.5mg or 17.2mg depending on response and tolerability, with at least 30 days at each dose; 17.2mg once daily is the maximum.21 If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible, but never more than one tablet a day.
There is an important point for anyone using the contraceptive pill. Foundayo may make oral contraceptive pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase.21 Discuss this with the prescriber before starting rather than relying on memory later.
In the ATTAIN-1 trial of 3,127 adults without type 2 diabetes, people taking the highest dose of orforglipron for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4% of their body weight, compared with 0.9% on placebo; the two lower doses gave 7.8% and 9.3%.23 The trial used capsules, and the UK 17.2mg tablet corresponds to the highest trial dose, so the tablet and capsule doses are not comparable milligram for milligram.
The UK product you can be prescribed is a tablet, and the capsule used in research is not something you can buy. It also has nothing to do with supplements sold online under similar words.
The most common side effects are digestive — nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting, indigestion and stomach pain. In the trial, 10.3% of people on the highest dose stopped because of side effects, compared with 2.7% on placebo.23 Even a convenient tablet is not free of downsides, and a prescriber can adjust how you step up.
If a weekly injection suits you better, the Mounjaro pen is the option we supply from official LillyDirect stock, and a prescriber can help you compare the routes against your own health and routine.
07 · Why no Mounjaro capsule
Is there a Mounjaro capsule or tablet?
There is no capsule or tablet form of Mounjaro. Tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK, supplied as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths.1 Any website offering "Mounjaro capsules" is selling something other than the licensed medicine, and our page on Mounjaro capsules explains how to spot the difference.
Why does it matter? The way Mounjaro works explains part of it. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide.
So when someone asks, "Is GLP-1 the same as Mounjaro?", the honest answer is that GLP-1 is a hormone and a drug class, while Mounjaro is one specific medicine that acts on GLP-1 and GIP receptors. Mounjaro is a GLP-1 medicine in the broad sense, but it is not simply a GLP-1 product, and a capsule labelled GLP-1 does not contain it.
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system — there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 A supplement offers no equivalent information, because it has no defined active ingredient with a known behaviour in the body.
For comparison between licensed medicines, SURMOUNT-5 is the trial that compared tirzepatide directly with injected semaglutide.15 No trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet, so results from separate trials — with different people, durations and doses — should not be set against each other as if they were head to head. The practical differences matter as much as the averages: Wegovy tablets need a strict empty-stomach routine every morning, Foundayo has no food or water rules, and Mounjaro needs one injection a week.
Where does that leave the reader? If you want Mounjaro, you want the pen, supplied against a prescription after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Our supply comes from official LillyDirect, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, and we stock genuine KwikPens across all six doses. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every order, so the injection itself is well supported.
If you would rather avoid injections, a tablet may suit you, and a prescriber can explain it. What you should not do is substitute an unregulated capsule and assume it is a milder, cheaper version of the same thing. It is not, and the safest assumption is that it is unproven.
08 · Side effects and safety
Side effects and safety: what to expect from real GLP-1 medicines
Licensed GLP-1 medicines can cause side effects, and most are digestive. Taking Mounjaro as the worked example: the most common — affecting more than 1 in 10 people — are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort.1 Common effects (up to 1 in 10) include indigestion, reduced appetite, dizziness, reflux, burping, hair shedding and injection-site reactions. Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts.
The trials give more detail on the stomach. In the trials supporting Mounjaro's weight-management licence, nausea was reported by 24.6% of people on 5mg, 29.0% on 10mg and 28.0% on 15mg, compared with 8.5% on placebo.1 Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea were more common while the dose was being increased and became less frequent over time. That pattern is one reason Mounjaro uses a gradual dose ladder, and prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up if a new dose is hard to tolerate.
Practical steps help most people: eat smaller meals slowly, stop at the first feeling of fullness, favour plain lower-fat foods while adjusting, stay well hydrated, and avoid lying down straight after eating. If nausea or vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs prompt attention.13
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.1 If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.
Mood is a common worry. Regulators have looked specifically at whether GLP-1 medicines are linked to low mood or suicidal thoughts: the EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence and concluded in 2024 that it does not support a causal link, and the MHRA keeps this under continuous review.17 That said, any big change in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel — tell your prescriber about any history of depression, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment.
If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.
Compare that with supplement capsules. There is no published licence listing their side effects, no standard dosing, no safety review of the kind licensed medicines have, and no prescriber watching for problems. The absence of listed side effects on a pot is not evidence that there are none. The same applies to the question "What is the safest pill to lose weight?": no pill is safe in the abstract. Safety depends on the medicine, your health, your other medicines and supervision. Our guide on whether GLP-1 capsules are safe expands on this.
If you notice any new symptom on any medicine, speak to your prescriber, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Reporting helps regulators spot problems early, and it applies to supplements too.
09 · Buying safely: NHS and private
Buying safely: NHS access, private treatment and scams
The safest way to get a GLP-1 medicine in the UK is through a prescriber, whether on the NHS or privately. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
Private treatment should look like a clinical service, not a shop for capsules. At EverydayMeds, the journey has four steps. You complete a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Our registered pharmacy dispenses it, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm. Delivery is free next-day tracked (DPD, temperature-controlled packaging, discreet), with Saturday delivery at £14.99.
Ongoing care is included: monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, and side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping. You can also use GLPTrackr, our free companion app for tracking a GLP-1 journey. Support is available Monday–Friday 9am–5pm by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, via the account portal chat, or on 0333 207 0413.
On cost, the consultation is free, the price shown is the price paid, and there are no hidden fees. Payment options include Visa, Mastercard and Klarna, plus pay-monthly options, with no subscriptions. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). Planning ahead, a first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg, at standard prices; a new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order £25 less.
Counterfeits are the real hazard with anything sold as a GLP-1 product. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme.7 Warning signs include sellers offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, social media listings, unusually dramatic promises, and products described as "the same as" a prescription medicine but sold as a supplement. You can verify a UK pharmacy on the GPhC register; ours is registration 9012878 on the GPhC register.12
For Mounjaro itself, our supply is official LillyDirect, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, with genuine KwikPens and all six doses stocked. Unopened pens go in the fridge at 2–8°C until first use; once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days, and must then be thrown away. For why dosing advice for supplements is not the same as for medicines, and how to read product claims critically, see GLP-1 capsules reviews.
10 · Dosage, results and claims
GLP-1 capsule dosage, results and the claims you will see
GLP-1 capsule dosage is not standardised. Because supplements are not licensed medicines, no regulator sets how much a capsule should contain, how often to take it, or how it should be stepped up. Licensed medicines are different: each has a defined starting dose, steps and maximum, set out in the product information.
The honest answer depends on the medicine, and the evidence only exists for licensed ones. Trial figures are averages and individual results vary. In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo.22 In the ATTAIN-1 trial of 3,127 adults without type 2 diabetes, people taking the highest dose of orforglipron for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4% of their body weight, compared with 0.9% on placebo; the two lower doses gave 7.8% and 9.3%.23 These are separate trials, and they should not be set side by side as a ranking.
A trial average over its full duration says little about what you personally will lose by a given date, and promises of rapid loss are a hallmark of supplement marketing. Where a seller states a dramatic figure and a short timescale, treat it as dramatic weight-loss claims with no clinical standing.
You may be asked to think in kilograms. A worked example names the starting weight: for someone starting at 100 kg, 13.6% is about 13.6 kg. That is simple arithmetic on a trial average, not a forecast for you, and it says nothing about how fast it happens.
Good outcomes also depend on habits around the medicine. Licensed treatments are used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Protein intake, resistance exercise and a pace guided by your prescriber help protect muscle, and temporary hair shedding is a recognised side effect linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect. These are the things that move results, rather than a capsule bought on impulse.
If you want to understand whether a capsule can do anything at all, our guides on whether GLP-1 capsules work and GLP-1 capsules for weight loss go through the question in detail. The short version is that there is no comparable trial evidence for supplements, and the licensed medicines are where the numbers come from.
If you are thinking about a treatment plan, a prescriber can set realistic expectations, start you on an appropriate dose, review progress monthly, and adjust. That support is the part a capsule cannot offer.
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.
Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day
A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
