Does Mounjaro Get Rid of Apron Belly? (October 2026)

Mounjaro can shrink the fat part of an apron belly, but it cannot tighten loose, stretched skin. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, people on 15mg lost 20.9% of their body weight on average over 72 weeks.2 Skin that has stretched for years may remain. Individual results vary. Current as of October 2026.2

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro helps you lose body weight, which can reduce the fat in an apron belly (pannus).
  • It does not tighten loose skin, so some overhang may remain after weight loss.
  • SURMOUNT-1 averages were 15% on 5mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks; individual results vary.
  • Persistent excess skin is usually discussed with a GP or surgeon, not treated with medicine.
  • Mounjaro is for adults who meet the licensed BMI criteria, alongside diet and activity.
In this guide

01 · The honest answer

What Mounjaro can and cannot change

Mounjaro can reduce an apron belly where the overhang is mostly fat, because it supports weight loss. Tirzepatide activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, helping you feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

It does not act on skin. If the skin has stretched over a long time, it may hang once the fat beneath it has gone. Results vary from person to person.

Part of the apron bellyEffect of weight loss with Mounjaro
Fat under and in front of the skinCan reduce as body weight falls
Stretched, loose skinMay remain; medicine does not tighten it
Skin folds and rubbingMay ease if the overhang shrinks

02 · Next step

Is Mounjaro right for you?

If you are exploring treatment, our free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. You can see current strengths and prices on the Mounjaro pen page, or read our Buy Mounjaro guide. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99).

03 · Expected weight loss

How much weight loss to expect

In SURMOUNT-1, 2,539 adults on tirzepatide with diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. These are trial averages, so they do not predict your own result. Read more in our guide on belly fat and Mounjaro.

04 · Options for loose skin

Options if loose skin remains

Loose skin that stays after weight loss is a matter for your GP or a surgeon, not for Mounjaro. Procedures such as a panniculectomy or tummy tuck are surgical decisions, and costs, risks and recovery vary by surgeon and clinic, so ask for a personal assessment.

Exercise can build muscle underneath, but it may not tighten skin. NHS funding for skin removal is decided locally; ask your GP what applies where you live.

05 · Who can take it

Who Mounjaro is licensed for

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber assesses suitability.11

It is also available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for a BMI of at least 35 plus a weight-related condition.4 See all weight loss treatments.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is it actually possible to get rid of apron belly?
Partly. If your apron belly is mostly fat, weight loss with Mounjaro, diet and activity can reduce it considerably. If it is largely loose skin, the skin may remain, and only a surgeon can remove it. A GP can assess which applies to you.
Will GLP-1 help with apron belly?
GLP-1 and GIP medicines such as Mounjaro help with weight loss, which can reduce the fat in an apron belly. They do not tighten skin. SURMOUNT-1 showed average losses of 15% to 20.9% over 72 weeks, but individual results vary.
Can you get rid of pannus stomach without surgery?
Weight loss can reduce a pannus that is mainly fat, and Mounjaro can support that alongside diet and activity. Loose skin generally will not tighten without surgery. Speak to your GP about what suits your situation.
What tightens the apron belly?
No medicine, including Mounjaro, tightens skin. Gradual weight loss and strength training may improve the look of the area underneath, but results vary. Persistent excess skin is assessed by a GP or surgeon.
How to tighten saggy stomach skin after weight loss?
Mounjaro does not tighten skin. Keeping active and building muscle may help how the area looks, but results vary. If skin remains and causes discomfort or rashes, ask your GP about options, including surgery.
How much does it cost to have your apron belly removed?
Costs depend on the procedure, surgeon and clinic. Ask for written quotes after a consultation. NHS funding is decided locally, so check with your GP.
What are the risks of apron belly surgery?
Any surgery carries risks, and a surgeon should explain them to you in a consultation. Tell any surgeon you are taking or have taken Mounjaro.
Will my stomach be flat after a panniculectomy?
That is a question for a surgeon, who can explain what the procedure aims to do and what results to expect for you. Weight loss beforehand, including with Mounjaro, may be discussed as part of planning.
