Can Mounjaro Get Rid of Diabetes? (October 2026)

Mounjaro is not a cure for diabetes: it is a licensed treatment that improves blood sugar control (HbA1c) and supports weight loss in type 2 diabetes.1 It does not remove the underlying condition, and your prescriber and diabetes team decide what any change in your results means. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is licensed for type 2 diabetes and for weight management in adults, but it manages the condition rather than curing it.
  • It activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which improve how the body responds to insulin.
  • If you have diabetes, tell your prescriber and your usual diabetes team so care stays joined up.
  • Weight management use needs a BMI of 30+, or 27–30 with a weight-related condition, plus diet and activity changes.
  • Never change diabetes medicines on your own; doses of some, such as insulin, may need adjusting.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

What Mounjaro can and cannot do for diabetes

Mounjaro is licensed for type 2 diabetes, where it improves blood sugar control (HbA1c) and supports weight loss.1 That is management, not a cure.

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1

QuestionHonest answer
Does it treat type 2 diabetes?Yes, it is licensed for it and improves HbA1c1
Does it cure it?No; it is a treatment
Does it support weight loss?Yes, alongside diet and activity2
Can I stop my other medicines?Only on your prescriber's advice

02 · What to do next

If you have diabetes and are considering Mounjaro

Speak to your GP or diabetes team first, because treatment and monitoring are coordinated differently when you have type 2 diabetes.1 If you are considering private treatment, our free consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and you can see the Mounjaro pen prices there too. Our broader guide to buying Mounjaro explains the process, and you can compare all weight loss treatments.

03 · Weight loss evidence

What the weight-loss trial showed

In SURMOUNT-1, 2,539 adults taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary.

For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

04 · Eligibility and stopping

Who can use it and what happens if you stop

For weight management, Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1 A prescriber assesses your BMI, history and current medicines first.

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system.1 Plan any change with your prescriber.

The NHS offers Mounjaro too, with access phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus a weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.4

05 · Side effects

Managing common side effects

Digestive symptoms are the most common side effects, especially when starting treatment or moving up a dose. Our guides cover bloating, constipation and feeling sick. Report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can diabetes be reversed with Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is a treatment for type 2 diabetes, not a cure. Your GP or diabetes team can interpret your HbA1c results and advise on any changes.
Can you reverse diabetes just by losing weight?
Weight loss can improve how the body responds to insulin, but whether your diabetes changes is a judgement for your GP or diabetes team, based on your tests.
What happens if you take Mounjaro and you are not diabetic?
Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27–30 with a weight-related condition, used alongside diet and activity. A prescriber assesses your BMI, history and medicines first to decide whether it is suitable.
How long should you stay on Mounjaro for diabetes?
Duration is a decision with your prescriber and diabetes team, based on your blood sugar, weight and how you tolerate treatment. Do not stop or change diabetes medicines without their advice.
Is it normal to gain weight after stopping Mounjaro?
In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average. Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.
Does Mounjaro increase life expectancy?
Mounjaro is licensed for type 2 diabetes and weight management, where it improves blood sugar control and supports weight loss. Ask your GP or diabetes team how treatment fits your long-term health.
What should I avoid while taking Mounjaro?
Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows, so ask your prescriber about this. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 If you take insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of low blood sugar risk. Always tell your prescriber about every medicine you take.
