Does Keto Increase GLP-1? An Honest UK Answer (October 2026)

Keto may prompt your gut to release some of its own GLP-1 after fatty, protein-rich meals, but that is not the same as the sustained, targeted effect of a licensed GLP-1 medicine such as Mounjaro. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Dietary fat and protein can stimulate gut hormones, but keto is not the same as a licensed GLP-1 medicine.
  • Mounjaro activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors directly, which is a different mechanism from diet-driven hormone release.
  • Keto is a diet choice, not a treatment. Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity.
  • If you take insulin or sulfonylureas, any big diet change should be discussed with your prescriber first.
  • Ask your prescriber before combining keto with Mounjaro, especially if you have diabetes.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Does keto raise your own GLP-1?

Possibly in a modest way, but the claim is often stated with more confidence than the evidence supports. The usual argument is that fat and protein reach the intestine and stimulate cells that release gut hormones, GLP-1 among them. That is a reasonable idea about digestion. It does not tell you how large the effect is, how long it lasts, or whether it changes your appetite in daily life.

02 · Comparison

Keto compared with a GLP-1 medicine

The two work in different ways and carry different levels of evidence.

FactorKeto dietMounjaro (tirzepatide)
What it isAn eating pattern you chooseA once-weekly prescription injection

Licensed for weight managementNo, it is not a medicineYes, in adults1

Tirzepatide's results are trial averages, and individual results vary.

03 · What to do

What should you do next?

If you were hoping keto would work like a GLP-1 medicine, the honest answer is that the two are not interchangeable. If you are eligible and want clinical support, our weight loss clinic explains the options, and the Mounjaro pen page shows current prices and the free consultation.

04 · How Mounjaro works

How Mounjaro differs from diet-driven GLP-1

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide.1

A diet works upstream, by changing what reaches your gut. A medicine works at the receptor. That is why we would not describe keto as a natural version of Mounjaro, however the hormone story is told online. For readers curious about other levers, see whether fasting increases GLP-1 and whether coffee does.

05 · What trials show

What the Mounjaro trial evidence shows

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages, and individual results vary. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 The trial did not test keto, so it tells you nothing about combining the two.

06 · Keto and Mounjaro together

Can you do keto while taking Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet, and the pattern that suits you depends on your health, your medicines and what you can sustain.

Medicines for diabetes need particular care. If you use insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. That does not mean they cannot be used with Mounjaro, but any large change in carbohydrate intake should be planned with your prescriber, not improvised.

Slowed stomach emptying is part of how the medicine works, so very rich, heavy meals may feel uncomfortable for some people. Our related guide on GLP-1 and the keto diet looks at the practical side of eating this way.

07 · Ketosis questions

Ketosis and Mounjaro

For Mounjaro, check the patient information leaflet and raise any new or unusual symptom with your prescriber. You can also report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19

For ketosis itself, a dietitian or your GP is the right source. This matters most if you have diabetes, because ketone problems can be serious there, so get medical advice if you are worried.

08 · Other natural options

Other food-based ideas people try

Keto is one of many tactics aimed at boosting GLP-1 without medication. Others include particular gut bacteria, coffee, fasting and supplements. Our pages on akkermansia and increasing GLP-1 naturally assess them in the same cautious way.

The pattern across them is consistent: a plausible mechanism is not proof of a meaningful result. Low-cost supplements come with no clinical oversight and no standardised dosing. If a seller promises dramatic weight-loss claims, treat that as a warning sign.

Sustainable habits matter more than any single trick: regular meals you can keep up, enough protein, movement you enjoy, and sleep. Those are the foundations a prescriber will ask about whichever route you take. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Does keto increase GLP-1?
Fat and protein can stimulate the gut to release hormones including GLP-1, so keto may raise your own GLP-1 somewhat. It is not equivalent to a licensed GLP-1 medicine, which acts directly on the receptors.
Is a keto diet good for GLP-1?
It may support some natural gut-hormone release, but 'good' depends on your health and goals. If you take diabetes medicines or Mounjaro, speak to your prescriber before making a large dietary change.
Can I do keto while taking Mounjaro?
Ask your prescriber first. Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet, and the pattern that suits you depends on your health and medicines. If you use insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of low blood sugar risk, so plan any big carbohydrate change with them.
Does Mounjaro cause ketosis?
Ketosis is not listed as a side effect in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet; tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom, and you can report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme. If you have diabetes and are worried about ketones, speak to your prescriber or GP.
Will a small amount of sugar kick you out of ketosis?
The threshold varies between people and depends on the rest of your diet. This is a nutrition question rather than a Mounjaro one, so a dietitian or your GP is the best source, particularly if you have diabetes.
What does pee look like in ketosis?
If you are worried about ketones, especially with diabetes, speak to your GP or pharmacist instead of relying on colour.
How long can you safely stay on keto?
Safety depends on your health, medicines and how well you manage the diet. Review it with a GP or dietitian, and tell your prescriber if you are on Mounjaro or any diabetes treatment.
Is keto a natural alternative to Mounjaro?
No. Keto is an eating pattern; Mounjaro is a licensed prescription medicine that activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Trial results for tirzepatide, such as SURMOUNT-1, say nothing about keto. If you want clinical support, our free consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
