Does Fasting Increase GLP-1? (October 2026)

Fasting is not a substitute for a GLP-1 medicine. Mounjaro is different: it activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors directly, once weekly, whatever your eating pattern.1 Fasting is a way of eating, not a licensed treatment. Anyone already on injections should talk to their prescriber before changing how they eat. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Fasting is an eating pattern. It is not a licensed medicine and is not a substitute for a GLP-1 treatment.
  • Mounjaro activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors directly, so its action does not depend on a fasting window.
  • Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so tell your prescriber before you fast.
  • If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, doses may need adjusting because of low blood sugar risk.
  • Report any new or worrying symptoms to your prescriber and through the Yellow Card scheme.

01 · The core answer

Does fasting increase GLP-1, and does it matter?

Fasting does not replace what a GLP-1 medicine does.

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 Because it acts on the receptors directly, it does not need a fasting window to work.

The more useful question is usually practical: should I fast while using, or considering, a GLP-1 treatment? Our page on fasting while on GLP-1 goes deeper on that side of it.

02 · Your decision

What should you do next?

Start by deciding what you actually want from fasting. If the aim is appetite control or weight management, a conversation about licensed treatment may be more useful than trying to engineer a hormone response through meal timing.

If you already take a GLP-1 medicine, do not begin a fasting routine without telling your prescriber. If you are not sure whether treatment suits you, our weight loss clinic explains the options. If you meet the licensed criteria and want regulated private treatment, the Mounjaro pen costs £169.99 per month at the 2.5mg starting dose, with every pen reviewed through a free consultation. 03 · How Mounjaro works

How Mounjaro works without fasting

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1

It is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

This is the key contrast with fasting. A medicine delivers a consistent, measured dose on a weekly schedule.

The same dual action distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).1 If you want to see how the options compare, our guide to how to increase GLP-1 sets out the wider picture.

04 · Is fasting safe on injections?

Is it safe to fast while taking GLP-1 injections?

The safe answer is to ask your prescriber first, because treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.1

Mounjaro already makes many people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 Adding long gaps between meals on top of that can make it harder to eat enough. That is a reason to talk it through, not a reason to act alone.

One interaction matters especially. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. This is not the same as saying the medicines must never be combined. It means your prescriber or diabetes team should guide any change in eating pattern.

If you notice a new symptom after changing how you eat, speak to your prescriber. Severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing: seek immediate medical help. You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19

Our page on fasting while on GLP-1 covers the practical side in more detail.

05 · Natural GLP-1 and food

Can food and drink raise GLP-1 naturally?

Many readers ask whether certain foods, drinks or habits lift GLP-1 on their own.

Low-cost supplements sold as a natural version of these medicines come with no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. Dramatic weight-loss claims attached to them deserve scepticism.

If you want to explore the topic, we have separate pages on how to increase GLP-1 naturally, whether coffee increases GLP-1, whether keto increases GLP-1 and whether akkermansia increases GLP-1.

06 · What the trials measured

What the trial evidence covers

The weight-loss evidence for Mounjaro comes from studies of the medicine used alongside diet and exercise, not from fasting studies. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

The trial did not test fasting windows, so it cannot tell you whether adding one would help or hinder. Do not read these figures as a prediction for a fasting routine. Trial averages do not predict your own result.

07 · Questions people ask about fasting

Common fasting questions, answered honestly

For questions about insulin, blood sugar or a fasting insulin test, a GP or diabetes team is the right place to go. They can look at your own results and history rather than general claims.

For signs that something is working, the sensible measures are the ones you and your clinician agree on in advance. Examples are how you feel, your appetite, and the follow-up reviews that come with treatment. Be wary of any source that offers a quick reset or a dramatic number.

08 · If you are considering treatment

If you are considering a GLP-1 medicine

If your interest in fasting comes from wanting help with weight, a licensed treatment may be worth a conversation. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary.

NHS access exists but is phased in over several years. NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first. Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.4

EverydayMeds is a GPhC-registered UK online pharmacy (registration GPhC 9012878).12 Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Mounjaro is supplied through official LillyDirect supply, and delivery is free next-day tracked in temperature-controlled packaging. A new-customer discount applies to first orders: new customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25).

Ongoing monthly reviews are included, so questions about eating patterns, including fasting, can be raised with the prescribing team as you go. Our free GLPTrackr app can also help you log how you feel.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Does fasting increase GLP-1?
Fasting is an eating pattern, not a licensed medicine, and it is not a substitute for a GLP-1 treatment. Mounjaro activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors directly, regardless of when you eat. If you want to change your eating pattern, discuss it with your prescriber first.
Is it safe to fast while taking GLP-1 injections?
Ask your prescriber before you fast. Mounjaro is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and many people already feel fuller sooner on it. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, doses may need adjusting because of low blood sugar risk, so get guidance first.
Can fasting replace Mounjaro or Wegovy?
No. Fasting is an eating pattern, not a licensed medicine. Mounjaro and Wegovy are prescription treatments with trial evidence, used alongside diet and activity.
Does fasting regulate insulin?
For concerns about insulin or blood sugar, speak to a GP or your diabetes team.
What foods stimulate glucagon release?
For questions about blood sugar hormones, ask a GP, pharmacist or dietitian who can consider your health history rather than general claims.
Why is 16 hours the magic number for fasting?
Popular windows are lifestyle conventions rather than licensed guidance. If you take a GLP-1 medicine, your prescriber can advise on what is sensible for you.
What are signs that fasting is working?
Agree measures with your clinician, such as how you feel, appetite and your regular reviews. Be cautious about sources promising quick resets or dramatic numbers, and report any new or worrying symptoms to your prescriber.
How long does Mounjaro stay in the body if I stop?
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. Speak to your prescriber if you are unsure.
Where can I get Mounjaro in the UK?
You can use the NHS, where access is phased in over several years, or regulated private treatment. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. See our Mounjaro pen page for current prices.
