Does GLP-1 Help Thyroid Issues? What the Evidence Supports (October 2026)
No: GLP-1 medicines are not a treatment for thyroid conditions. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, not for any thyroid disorder1. Weight loss may matter to some people who also have a thyroid condition, but thyroid results may not change. Thyroid history also needs to be disclosed before treatment.

Any change in thyroid blood results is not a promised outcome, and your thyroid medicine and tests stay with your own clinician.
-
Tell your prescriber about medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2 in you or a close relative before starting.
-
Having an underactive or overactive thyroid does not automatically rule you out; your prescriber reviews your full history.
-
Never change thyroid medicine yourself because you have started a weight-loss injection.
In this guide
01 · The core answer
Does GLP-1 treat thyroid problems?
No. GLP-1 medicines do not treat, cure or reverse thyroid conditions. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, and in the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes1. Thyroid disease is not on that list. If you hope an injection will fix an underactive or overactive thyroid, it will not.
The question usually comes from a more practical place. Many people with a thyroid condition find weight hard to manage and wonder whether a weight-loss injection is safe or helpful for them. The honest answer has two halves. The first is about benefit: the medicine acts on appetite, not on the thyroid gland. The second is about safety: there is a specific thyroid-related precaution in the product information that your prescriber must weigh before you start.
If your thyroid results change as your weight changes, that is a conversation for the clinician who manages your thyroid.
02 · Is this relevant to me?
Should you take a GLP-1 if you have thyroid issues?
Often you can be considered, but it depends on which thyroid issue you have and on your full history. The product information separates two quite different situations. A common treated thyroid condition, such as an underactive thyroid managed with regular medication, is not named as a reason to avoid Mounjaro. A history of medullary thyroid cancer, or the inherited condition MEN 2, in you or a close relative is the situation your prescriber must specifically weigh1.
As a precaution, tell your prescriber if you or a close relative have had medullary thyroid cancer or the inherited condition MEN 2 — they will weigh this in your assessment. Routine thyroid monitoring is not required for most people.113
In practice that means three things. Be complete and accurate on your consultation form. Mention every thyroid diagnosis, every thyroid medicine, and any family history you know of. And keep seeing whoever monitors your thyroid, because starting a weight-loss medicine does not replace that care.
03 · What to do next
What to do next
Start by checking whether you meet the licensed criteria for weight management, then complete a free consultation that a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews. Our guide to taking Mounjaro with thyroid issues covers the practical questions in more depth, and our wider GLP-1 and thyroid explainer sets out the background. If you are ready to look at treatment, the Mounjaro pen page shows current doses and prices, with all strengths in stock. Our weight loss clinic page explains the full service.
If you are unsure whether your thyroid history matters, do not guess. Describe it in the consultation and let the prescriber decide. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
04 · Thyroid safety warning
The thyroid safety warning explained
The only thyroid-specific caution on Mounjaro concerns a rare type of thyroid cancer, not the everyday thyroid conditions most people have. In rodent studies tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumours; it is not known whether this applies to humans, and no increase has been shown in human trials.1 That sentence is worth reading slowly, because it is easy to over-read or under-read.
It does not say the medicine causes thyroid cancer in people. It says an effect was seen in animals, that nobody knows whether it carries over, and that human trials have not shown an increase. Regulators still treat it as a precaution, which is why it appears in the product information and why prescribers ask about it. If you want to read about the cause-and-effect question directly, our page on whether Mounjaro can cause thyroid issues goes through it.
What your prescriber is looking for
Your prescriber is looking for a history of medullary thyroid cancer or the inherited condition MEN 2 in you or a close relative. Not on that list: an underactive thyroid, an overactive thyroid, Hashimoto's, Graves' disease, thyroid nodules, or taking thyroid replacement medicine. None of those is named as a reason to be refused. They are still part of your medical history, and a prescriber needs to see them to give a safe assessment.
Why disclosure matters even for common conditions
Your consultation is not a pass or fail quiz. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it as a whole, looking at your conditions, your medicines and your goals together. If you leave out a thyroid diagnosis because you assume it is irrelevant, the prescriber cannot make that judgement for you. We would always rather have too much information than too little.
Monitoring
The product information also says routine thyroid monitoring is not required for most people.1 That is not the same as saying you should stop any monitoring you already have. If your GP or endocrinologist checks your thyroid regularly, that continues exactly as before. Mounjaro does not replace it and does not remove the need for it.
Symptoms to report
If you notice something new that worries you, such as a lump or swelling in the neck, tell your prescriber or GP rather than waiting for a scheduled review. You can also report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Reporting is how regulators keep watching a medicine after launch, and it is open to patients as well as clinicians.
The takeaway is proportionate: this is a precaution you act on by being open about your history, not a reason for most people with a common thyroid condition to assume they are excluded.
05 · How GLP-1 works
What GLP-1 medicines actually do in the body
GLP-1 medicines work on appetite and digestion, not on the thyroid gland. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.
That mechanism is the whole story of how the medicine helps. There is no step in it where the thyroid is treated. When a headline says a GLP-1 "helps thyroid", the claim, where it holds any weight at all, is about something indirect: a person eats less, loses weight, and other measurements may move alongside that.
Why the question keeps coming up
Thyroid conditions and body weight are linked in many people's minds, and understandably so. Someone whose thyroid is under-treated may notice weight changes, and someone who has lost weight may wonder what happens to their thyroid blood tests.
Direct versus indirect effects
A direct effect would mean the medicine acts on thyroid tissue or thyroid hormones. An indirect effect would mean weight loss itself changes something else. In trials, weight loss on tirzepatide came with average improvements in waist size, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar measures, and most participants with prediabetes returned to normal blood-sugar levels.2 Notice that thyroid measures are not on that list. These are trial-average secondary outcomes, not promises.
What this means for you
Think of Mounjaro as a tool for weight management alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. If weight is your goal, that is what it is licensed for. If a thyroid result is your goal, the right route is your thyroid clinician. You can read more about what GLP-1 medicines can help with if you want the wider picture of the licensed uses and the claims that go beyond them.
06 · Weight loss with thyroid
Losing weight when you have a thyroid condition
Many people with thyroid conditions want to know whether weight loss is realistic for them, and trial results describe adults in general.
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2
How to read that number
It is an average across many people. Some lost more, some lost less, and the trial does not tell you where you would fall. Trial averages do not predict your own result, and that applies to everyone, with or without a thyroid condition.
Starting low and moving up
Your prescriber reviews you before each step up. That gradual approach gives you time to see how you respond and gives your clinical team time to check in with you. You do not have to reach the highest strength; the dose that suits you is the dose that is right.
What helps alongside the injection
The medicine is not a substitute for the basics. A reduced-calorie diet, regular movement and sensible sleep still do the heavy lifting around the appetite reduction. If you have a thyroid condition, your own clinician is the right person to advise on anything specific to it.
Keeping your thyroid medicine steady
If you take thyroid medicine, keep taking it as directed, at the dose your clinician set. Do not adjust it yourself because your weight is changing. Tell your prescriber about every medicine you take, including thyroid treatment, during the consultation and at each review, so that nothing is overlooked.
Realistic expectations
Weight change on treatment can matter for health as well as appearance, but the key point is simple: treat Mounjaro as a weight-management medicine, and expect your thyroid care to stay exactly where it is. Our Mounjaro thyroid issues guide goes through the common practical questions people ask once they start.
07 · Who should be careful
Who should not take Mounjaro, and who needs extra care
Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone, and your thyroid history is only one part of the picture. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.1 Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems.13 Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.
Where thyroid fits in
Notice that a standard thyroid diagnosis is not in that list. The precaution described earlier concerns medullary thyroid cancer and MEN 2. That is why we ask for your complete history, not just the items on a short list. A prescriber can weigh a thyroid condition alongside everything else you tell them.
Serious side effects to know about
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting, which could be pancreatitis. Also seek immediate medical help for pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes, which could be a gallbladder problem, and for signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.1
If you also take other medicines
If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar, which can feel like shakiness, sweating or confusion. Your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1 This matters for people who have thyroid conditions and diabetes together, because the medicine list is longer and the review needs to be thorough.
Contraception
Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows, so discuss your contraception with your prescriber.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Thyroid conditions can matter around pregnancy planning, so this is a good topic to raise openly rather than assume. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.
How we handle borderline cases
Our prescribers are GPhC-registered and review each consultation individually; it is not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. If you are on the fence, you can start the free consultation without any obligation, and the answer comes from a person who can see your whole history.
08 · Kidneys, liver and mood
Other health questions people with thyroid conditions ask
The first is about the kidneys and liver. Mounjaro is not known to damage kidneys or liver directly, and no dose adjustment is needed for mild to moderate kidney or liver impairment.1 The practical risk is indirect: severe vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration, which can strain the kidneys, so keep fluids up and contact your clinical team if you cannot keep fluids down. People with severe impairment need individual prescriber assessment.
Mood and energy
Thyroid conditions can affect how people feel, so it is reasonable to ask about mood. Regulators have looked specifically at whether GLP-1 medicines are linked to low mood or suicidal thoughts: the EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence and concluded in 2024 that it does not support a causal link, and the MHRA keeps this under continuous review.17 That said, any big change in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel. Tell your prescriber about any history of depression, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment.
If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.
Tiredness is not a thyroid verdict
If you feel tired or low once you start, resist the urge to decide what the cause is. Eating less can affect energy, and so can a thyroid that is not well controlled. We cannot tell which is responsible from a distance, and neither can a search engine. Contact your prescriber or GP, describe what is happening, and let them decide whether anything needs checking.
Gut side effects and thyroid tablets
Because tirzepatide slows how quickly the stomach empties, it is sensible to tell your prescriber about every tablet you take, including thyroid replacement. Raise it in your consultation and at monthly reviews, and follow the advice you are given.
Reporting anything unexpected
For any symptom you notice, state plainly what has happened and discuss it with your prescriber. A symptom that is not on the UK patient leaflet list is not a listed side effect, so tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom. You can still report it through the Yellow Card scheme, which exists so that regulators can spot patterns.19
Aftercare
Our team provides ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments, plus side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping, so your history is revisited whenever you reorder.
09 · NHS and private
NHS or private: how people with thyroid issues get access
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
Starting with your GP
If you have a thyroid condition and a high BMI with other health conditions, your GP is a sensible first conversation. They know your thyroid history and can tell you where you sit in the phased rollout. If you are not yet eligible, or would rather not wait, a regulated private route is a legitimate alternative.
What private treatment involves with us
EverydayMeds is a GPhC-registered UK online pharmacy (registration GPhC 9012878). The route has four steps. You complete a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Your medicine is dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm. Delivery is free next-day tracked, in discreet temperature-controlled packaging, with Saturday delivery at £14.99.
Genuine supply
We supply Mounjaro direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution through official LillyDirect supply, with genuine KwikPens and every strength from 2.5mg to 15mg in stock. Counterfeit weight-loss injections are a real risk online, and the MHRA publishes alerts about them.7 Be wary of any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, and check a pharmacy against the GPhC register.12
What it costs
The standard price of the 2.5mg starter pen is £169.99 per month (a four-week pen), checked 10 October 2026. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). Across the UK pharmacies we track, starting pens range from £143.96 to £179.99 as of 10 October 2026. The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid.
Paying
You can pay by Visa or Mastercard, use Klarna or pay-monthly options, and there are no subscriptions. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order. Our Mounjaro pen page lists current strengths and prices.
10 · Natural routes and myths
Natural thyroid questions and other medicines
Questions such as which foods or drinks affect the thyroid, what can worsen thyroid problems, or how to bring thyroid results back to normal naturally are legitimate, but they belong with your GP, endocrinologist or a dietitian. Anyone who gives you a confident list without a source is guessing.
Can thyroid-related weight gain be reversed?
Weight change has many causes. A clinician who has your blood tests can tell you whether your thyroid is likely to be a factor.
Supplements and "natural" injections
Low-cost supplements sold with dramatic weight-loss claims have no clinical oversight and dosing is not standardised. They are not a substitute for a licensed medicine, and they are certainly not a thyroid treatment. If a product promises specific results, treat that as a warning sign, and talk to a pharmacist or prescriber before combining anything with your thyroid medicine.
If you have a side effect
Report suspected side effects of any medicine, supplement or product through the Yellow Card scheme.19 It is simple, free and open to the public.
Where to find reliable answers
Start with your GP or thyroid clinician for anything about thyroid control. For weight-management questions, our prescribing team can help, and our guide to GLP-1 and lymphatic drainage and GLP-1 and skin issues pages show the same cautious approach to other claimed benefits.
11 · Before you start
A practical checklist before you start
If you have a thyroid condition and are considering Mounjaro, a short checklist helps you walk into your consultation prepared. Treat it as preparation, not a test. The aim is to give the prescriber a complete picture so the decision is well-informed.
Gather your thyroid history
Write down your diagnosis, when it was made, and what treatment you take. Note any thyroid surgery, nodules or scans you remember. Most importantly, find out whether anyone in your close family has had medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2, because that is the specific precaution in the product information.1 If you do not know, say so, and ask relatives if you can.
List every medicine
Include thyroid tablets, other prescription medicines, contraception and anything you buy over the counter. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, say so clearly, since doses may need adjusting.1
Know your goals
Be clear about why you want treatment. Mounjaro supports weight management alongside diet and activity. It is not a thyroid treatment, and it carries no promise of any particular result.2 Setting expectations early avoids disappointment.
Tell your thyroid clinician
If you have a regular thyroid review, let that clinician know you are starting treatment. They can keep monitoring as they normally would. We do not advise changing thyroid medicine because of weight change unless they tell you to.
Plan for the early weeks
Starting at 2.5mg and stepping up gradually, you will be reviewed before each increase. Keep fluids up, report anything worrying, and contact the clinical team if you cannot keep fluids down.1 Support is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through account portal chat, or by phone on 0333 207 0413.
Track your journey
Our free companion app, GLPTrackr, helps you record your progress on iOS and Android. It can be a handy way to keep notes to share with your prescriber or thyroid clinician.
When to stop and ask
If something feels wrong, such as severe stomach pain, yellowing skin or eyes, or swelling of the face or throat, get medical help straight away; for a new lump in the neck, tell your prescriber or GP. When in doubt, ask. A question to a clinician costs nothing and is always better than guessing.
