The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years.

03 · Who qualifies privately

Who qualifies for private treatment

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1

People from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds are at higher risk of weight-related health problems at a lower BMI, so clinical thresholds are usually reduced by 2.5 kg/m² for these groups. A prescriber assesses your BMI, history and current medicines first. See the conditions that count for NHS access.

04 · Who should not take it

Who should not take Mounjaro

You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it must not be used during pregnancy; stop it at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Prescribers take extra care, or may advise against it, with a history of pancreatitis, severe digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy or gallbladder problems.1

Tell your prescriber about any personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2.13 This applies whether you are treated on the NHS or privately. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

05 · What results to expect

What results to expect

In SURMOUNT-1 (2,539 adults), people taking tirzepatide with diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. These are trial averages, and individual results vary.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
How do I qualify to get Mounjaro on the NHS?
NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions. Your GP or local service confirms whether your group has been reached.
Will my GP prescribe me Mounjaro?
Possibly, if you meet the NHS criteria for the groups the rollout has reached. Access is phased over several years, so your GP may place you in a later group. They will review your BMI, conditions and medicines before deciding.
How much is Mounjaro at Boots?
Across the Mounjaro doses we track, Boots' prices run from £179.00 to £339.00 per month, checked 12 October 2026. Our own 2.5mg pen is £169.99 per month at standard price.
Who is eligible for NHS weight loss injections in 2026?
NICE recommends tirzepatide for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. Thresholds are usually reduced by 2.5 kg/m² for some ethnic backgrounds. Because rollout is phased, the highest-need groups are treated first, so ask your GP where you fall.
How much weight can you lose on Mounjaro in 3 months?
Trial figures cover 72 weeks, not three months; three months in, most people are still on the lower doses and losses are modest. A sensible 3-month expectation on a standard titration is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation; in SURMOUNT-1 the full 15–21% averages were measured at 72 weeks, not 12. Individual results vary.
Can I get Mounjaro privately if I do not qualify for the NHS?
Possibly. The licence covers a BMI of 30 or above, or 27–30 with a weight-related condition. After a free online consultation, a GPhC-registered prescriber decides whether Mounjaro is suitable for you. Unsuitable orders are refunded automatically.
