A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
You do not need your own GP to request or sign off a Mounjaro prescription; a private prescriber can do it after an online consultation.
-
Mounjaro is prescription-only, so any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription should be avoided.
-
Your GP holds your full medical history, so telling them helps your prescriber and you stay safe, but it is your decision.
-
Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40; every later order is £25 off the standard price.
-
NHS access exists but is phased in over several years, which is why many eligible adults choose private treatment.
In this guide
01 · The short answer
Can you get Mounjaro without going through your GP?
Yes. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, but the prescription does not have to come from your own GP. A GPhC-registered prescriber working with a regulated online pharmacy can review your health questionnaire and decide whether it is suitable for you. That is how our service works.
The important distinction is between needing a GP and telling a GP. You do not need a GP referral, a GP appointment or a GP letter to start. Whether you mention treatment to your GP afterwards is up to you. Our own guides cover the route in more detail: see how the no-GP route works, or our page on starting treatment without telling your GP.
What you cannot do is skip the clinical step. Mounjaro is supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1 Anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is not following the rules for a prescription-only medicine, and you should walk away.
02 · What happens
What the prescriber actually checks
The prescriber decides on suitability from what you tell them, so accuracy matters. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. The prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding.111
That last point is why many people choose to keep their GP informed. Your GP has the full record of past conditions, test results and every medicine you take. A prescriber working only from your questionnaire sees what you give them. We do not describe it as a requirement, but it is a useful safety net.
If you want a related angle, our guide to weight loss injections without your GP knowing covers the wider category, and getting Mounjaro without contacting your GP looks at the practical side.
03 · Cost
What it costs privately
The Mounjaro pen costs £169.99 per month at the 2.5mg starting dose. A new customer's first order is £40 less with code FIRST40, which brings your first 2.5mg pen to £129.99. After that, every future order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25). The discount applies at any dose, so if you are moving to us at a higher dose, your first 15mg pen is £289.99.
For planning, if you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. These totals are before discounts; your first order is £40 less and every later order £25 less. The consultation is free, the price shown is the price paid, and there are no hidden fees. Our Buy Mounjaro page shows live prices for all six doses, which are in stock.
04 · How ordering works
How ordering works in four steps
- Free online consultation. A short health questionnaire, no charge and no obligation. Start your free consultation when you are ready.
- Prescriber review. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
- Dispensing and dispatch. Our registered pharmacy dispenses your genuine KwikPen, supplied through official LillyDirect supply. Same-day dispatch applies when you order by 3pm.
- Delivery. Free next-day tracked delivery by DPD in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.
Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and nothing ships automatically.
05 · Why tell your GP
Why telling your GP is still worth considering
You are not obliged to tell your GP, but there are practical reasons to. Your prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro is suitable.1 Your GP already holds that information, and any future treatment decisions they make will be better if they know what you take.
Medicines you take for other conditions matter. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed, so the SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion); your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines. A GP who knows about your injection can help manage those changes in step with your other care.
There is also a simple continuity point. If you are ever admitted to hospital, attend A&E or see a different clinician, a record that includes your Mounjaro treatment prevents surprises. If you would rather not involve your GP, you can still keep a list of your medicines and share it with any clinician who treats you. The guide to Mounjaro without telling your GP goes through this in more depth.
If you have questions about how your details are handled, ask during the consultation. Our support team can also help on Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, on 0333 207 0413 or at support@everydaymeds.co.uk.
06 · Who is eligible
Who can be prescribed Mounjaro privately
Eligibility is set by the licence, not by who your GP is. Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1 It is used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
The prescriber may decide it is not right for you even if your BMI qualifies. They weigh your history and your other medicines. If they decline, the order is refunded automatically in full. That is a feature, not a failure: it means the clinical step is real.

07 · NHS versus private
The NHS route versus going private
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years.
The NHS route runs through your GP or a commissioned service, so by its nature your GP is involved. That is a real advantage for some people: monitoring, records and treatment are in one place, and the cost is covered if you qualify. If you meet the NHS criteria and can wait for access, ask your GP where you stand.
Private treatment suits adults who meet the licensed criteria but not yet the NHS thresholds, or who do not want to wait. The two routes are not mutually exclusive. Some people start privately and speak to their GP later about NHS options.
| Question | NHS route | Private online route |
|---|---|---|
| Is a GP involved? | Yes, usually through your GP or a commissioned service | No GP referral needed; a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews you |
| Who qualifies? | NICE criteria, phased by need | Licensed criteria, decided by the prescriber |
| Wait | Phased in over several years | Consultation reviewed by a prescriber; delivery next day once approved |
| Cost | Covered if you qualify | Pen price per month, shown live on our product page |
08 · Spotting unsafe sellers
How to spot an unsafe seller
Wanting privacy is reasonable, but it is also what unsafe sellers exploit. A seller offering to supply Mounjaro without a consultation or prescription is breaking the rules for a prescription-only medicine. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting suspected problems.7
Check these before you pay anyone:
- The seller appears on the GPhC register as a pharmacy. You can check ours (9012878) on the GPhC public register.12
- A prescriber reviews your answers before anything is dispatched.
- The product is a genuine, sealed KwikPen, not a vial, powder or repackaged pen.
- The seller does not promise specific results or push you to buy quickly.
We supply Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. If you want a quick check of other routes, our page on buying Mounjaro without notifying your GP explains what a legitimate order looks like.
09 · After you start
What happens after you start
Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself. After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, then can step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg) to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on response and tolerance.1 Many people settle on 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better.
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages and individual results vary.2 For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg.
Weight loss is gradual by design. Think in months, not days. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.1 Our service includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments, plus side-effect support.
10 · Side effects and reporting
Side effects and who to tell
Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.13 If something new or worrying appears, discuss it with your prescriber, or with a GP or pharmacist if you prefer. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19
This is another reason some people tell their GP: if you need urgent care for any reason, a clinician who knows you take a weekly injection can act sooner. Whatever you decide, keep your pen's patient information leaflet and our support details to hand.

How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes
Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.
Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day
A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
