A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Pack pens in hand luggage, never the hold, because hold luggage can fall below freezing.
  • An in-use pen tolerates up to 30 days not above 30°C, so most trips need only a simple cool bag.
  • Carry the prescription label or a copy, and check destination rules for prescription injectables before you fly.
  • For hot climates use an insulated pouch, and never let a pen freeze.
  • Plan your injection day around travel rather than skipping; the missed-dose and day-change rules are the same abroad.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can you take a Mounjaro pen on holiday?

Yes, you can fly with Mounjaro, and most people travel with it without any difficulty.1 The rules are simple: hand luggage only, keep it cool, keep the label with it, and check the rules at your destination.

The pen is a once-weekly KwikPen containing four weekly doses, so a pen you have started will often cover a whole trip. If your trip is longer, you may carry the next pen too, which should stay refrigerated until first use.

02 · Before you go

Holiday packing checklist for your weight loss pen

ItemWhy it matters
Pen in hand luggageHold luggage can fall below freezing, and a frozen pen must never be used.1
Cool bag or insulated pouchKeeps the pen cool, especially in hot climates. Keep the pen away from direct contact with ice packs, because freezing damages it.
Prescription label or a copyShows the medicine is yours if staff ask at security.
Original box and pen capThe cap protects the pen from light.1
Needles and a way to dispose of them safelySharps guidance is included with every order; plan how you will dispose of needles abroad.
Destination rules checkedCountries differ on prescription injectables, so check before you fly.

03 · The decision

Should you take a break from Mounjaro on holiday?

Most people keep injecting on holiday, because the weekly schedule is simple to maintain away from home. A pause is a decision for your prescriber, not something to improvise. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system.1 A short gap therefore does not mean the medicine disappears overnight, but speak to the prescribing team before changing your plan.

If you are a current customer, our team can talk it through at your monthly review. If you are still weighing up treatment, you can see how the Mounjaro pen and consultation work, or read about our weight loss clinic.

04 · Flying with a pen

Flying with your Mounjaro pen

You can fly with Mounjaro, and the pen belongs in your carry-on bag, never the hold.1 Hold luggage can fall below freezing, and a pen that has been frozen must not be used.13

Pack it in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of your prescription. Keep the medicine together in one place so it is easy to show if asked. Because rules for carrying prescription injectables differ between countries, check the destination's requirements, and your airline's, before you travel.

If you want a refresher on handling the pen itself before you pack, our guide on how to prepare a Mounjaro pen walks through it.

05 · Heat and storage

Keeping the pen cool in hot weather

An in-use pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, after which it should be discarded.1 For hot climates, use an insulated pouch.

Unopened pens belong in the fridge at 2–8°C and keep until the expiry date printed on the box.1 Never freeze a pen, and keep the cap on to protect it from light.

  • Do not leave the pen in a parked car, on a beach or in direct sun.
  • Use the hotel fridge for spare unopened pens, away from the freezer compartment.
  • If an unopened pen has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before using it rather than relying on a remembered day limit. Figures circulating online often come from other countries' labels.

A pen is also not safe to use if it looks cloudy or discoloured, has particles in it, is past its expiry, or has been out of the fridge for more than 30 days, or above 30°C in use.1

06 · Injection day and time zones

Injection day, time zones and missed doses

If your injection day falls on a travel day, you have two clean options: inject as normal, or move the day. You can change your weekly injection day if needed, as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.13 Mounjaro can be injected at any time of day, with or without food, so a time-zone shift is not a problem. What matters is keeping to the same day each week.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day — never take two doses within 3 days of each other.13

We cover the early-dose question in taking Mounjaro early before a holiday.

07 · Planning supply

Planning your supply before you travel

Work out when your next pen is due before you leave, so you are not reordering from abroad. If you are a customer, repeat orders re-check suitability and nothing ships automatically, so build in time for that.

We offer free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm. Deliveries need someone home to receive them, so arrange this around your departure date.

Always check that your supply is genuine. Our supply is official LillyDirect, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. A genuine pen comes from a registered pharmacy with a batch number and expiry date and arrives cold-chain packaged. If anything seems wrong, check the pharmacy on the GPhC register and contact it before injecting.12

08 · Insurance and next steps

Travel insurance, symptoms abroad and disposal

Tell your travel insurer about your treatment if their forms ask about medicines or health conditions.

If you feel unwell abroad, the commonest early effects are mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection, and they usually settle.1 Anything new or worrying should be discussed with a clinician, and you can report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

Keep used pens and needles safely until you can dispose of them properly; see our guide to Mounjaro pen recycling. For a wider overview of injectables, read about the weight loss pen.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can I take my Mounjaro pen on holiday?
Yes. Carry the pen in hand luggage, ideally in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of your prescription, and check destination rules for prescription injectables before you fly. An in-use pen tolerates up to 30 days not above 30°C, so most holidays need no special arrangements.
How long can Mounjaro be out of the fridge in the UK?
Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, then it should be discarded. For an unopened pen that has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before using it rather than relying on a day limit you have seen online.
Do I need to declare Mounjaro on my travel insurance?
That depends on your insurer, so ask them directly and keep their answer in writing. Many forms ask about medicines or health conditions. Carrying your prescription label or a copy will help if you need to explain your medicine.
Can you take a break from Mounjaro while on holiday?
Speak to your prescriber before pausing treatment. Tirzepatide takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system after a final dose, and nothing needs doing while it clears. Most people simply keep their weekly injection going, using the pen in a cool bag, rather than stopping for a trip.
Can I change my injection day for travel?
Yes. You can change your weekly injection day if needed, as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose. Mounjaro can be injected at any time of day, with or without food, so crossing time zones is not a problem as long as you keep a consistent weekly day.
Can I put my Mounjaro pen in my suitcase?
No. Keep it in hand luggage, because hold luggage can fall below freezing and a pen that has been frozen must never be used. Pack it in a cool bag with your prescription label, keep the cap on to protect it from light, and keep it away from direct contact with ice packs.
