Can I Skip a Week of Mounjaro? (October 2026)
You should not skip a week of Mounjaro on purpose without speaking to your prescriber first. If you simply forgot a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time; if more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take the next one on your normal day — never take two doses within 3 days of each other.13 Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so a gap does not stop it working instantly.
One pen. Four weekly doses.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Deliberately skipping a week is not something to do on your own; speak to your prescriber, who knows your dose and history first.
-
A forgotten dose is different from a chosen skip: the patient information leaflet sets out what to do, and we can help you apply it.
-
Tirzepatide clears slowly, so one gap does not wipe out progress, but hunger and food noise may return sooner than you expect.
-
Holidays, illness and side effects are common reasons for wanting a break, and each has a better answer than quietly skipping.
-
Never take extra medicine to catch up, and never stretch or change the schedule without clinical advice.
In this guide
01 · The core answer
Should you skip a week of Mounjaro?
No, not as a routine choice and not without clinical advice. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine, supplied as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen.1 The licensed schedule is a regular weekly injection, and the dose steps up only under prescriber supervision. A planned gap is outside that schedule, which is why the safest first move is a message to the prescriber rather than a quiet pause.
That said, real life gets in the way. You might be unwell, travelling, struggling with nausea or simply forgot the day. The right answer depends on why the dose is being missed.
| Your situation | What to do | Who to ask |
|---|---|---|
| You forgot your injection day | Take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose and take the next one on your normal day. Never take two doses within 3 days of each other. | The leaflet, then your prescriber or pharmacist |
| You want to skip for a holiday or event | Raise it before you go. Your prescriber can advise on timing so you are not left guessing mid-trip. | Your prescriber |
| Side effects are bad this week | Tell the prescribing team. A different approach to the dose may be better than a self-chosen gap. | Your prescriber |
| You are ill, vomiting or cannot eat or drink | If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away. | Your prescriber |
| You want a longer break or to stop | Discuss a plan. Stopping is your choice, but there are things to expect afterwards. | Your prescriber |
| You are running out of pen | Order early enough that supply does not force an accidental gap. | Our support team |
Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), and all six doses are in stock.
02 · What next
What to do if you have already missed it
If the week has already passed, take the dose as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day.13 If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day — never take two doses within 3 days of each other.
Do not inject extra medicine to make up the gap, and do not change the day without advice. If the leaflet leaves you unsure, message the prescriber who reviews your treatment. Our aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and side-effect support, so asking is exactly what the service is for. You can read our separate guide on skipping a single dose for the practical detail.
03 · What a gap does
What happens in your body when you skip a week
Mounjaro does not switch off the moment a dose is late, because tirzepatide stays in the body for a long time. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system — there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1
In practice this means a single missed week leaves a good amount of medicine still active. It does not mean there is no effect.
Tirzepatide works by activating two natural gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. If that signal weakens, the diet is what you feel it in first.
For a detailed look at this, our guide on what happens if you skip a week goes through appetite, side effects and restarting in more depth.
04 · Appetite and weight
Will skipping a week affect appetite and weight loss?
It can affect appetite, and that is the main practical risk. Mounjaro helps regulate appetite, so hunger may feel different if doses are missed. That is not a moral failure; it is the medicine doing less of the work.
Weight is a slower story. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design, trials measured results at 72 weeks, and the right way to judge progress is by trend rather than individual weigh-ins.2
Remember also that trial results come from people taking the medicine as prescribed, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. In SURMOUNT-1, people on tirzepatide lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages, and individual results vary.2 They do not tell you what skipping would do for you personally.
If you are asking whether skipping can help weight loss, the honest answer is that there is no clinical basis for it. Less medicine is not more effect. If you feel progress has stalled, that is a conversation about food, activity, sleep and dose with your prescriber, not a reason to change the schedule yourself.
05 · Plateaus and gaps
Skipping versus a plateau
Some people consider skipping because the scales have stopped moving. Plateaus of a few weeks are normal and expected as the body adapts to a lower weight, so a stall is not a sign the medicine has failed.4
Within the licence, the sensible responses are to review food intake honestly because portions drift back up, protect protein and activity, check the basics such as sleep and alcohol, and discuss with your prescriber whether a dose step-up is appropriate if you are not yet at maximum. A plateau is not a reason to double doses or add unlicensed products.
Skipping a week does not break a plateau and may make the picture harder to read, because you will not know whether a change came from the gap or from your habits. Our weight loss clinic page explains how ongoing reviews fit around this.
06 · Holidays and events
Can I skip a week of Mounjaro for a holiday?
You can usually plan around a holiday without skipping, and that is the better conversation to have. Tell your prescriber your dates in advance so the injection day, your supply and any travel questions are sorted before you leave. This is far safer than deciding at the airport.
Going without is tempting because holiday meals and nausea do not mix well in anyone's mind. But the medicine is not designed around a break for a trip. If nausea worries you, mention that specifically, because the commonest early effects are mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection, and they usually settle.1
For storage while travelling, an in-use pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Unopened pens should be kept in the fridge until first use and keep until the printed expiry date. For anything beyond that, such as long journeys or heat, check the patient information leaflet and ask the pharmacy.13
Our companion app GLPTrackr can help you note injection days before and after a trip so nothing gets lost in the shuffle.
07 · Every other week
Every other week, every five days, or stretching a pen
The answer is the same for all of them: the licensed schedule is once weekly, and any change belongs in a prescriber conversation rather than a home experiment.1
On pens, the in-use limit is the useful rule. Once you start a KwikPen it is licensed for up to 30 days (not above 30°C) out of the fridge, and a pen is a month's supply when used as directed. A pen kept beyond 30 days, or above 30°C in use must be thrown away.13
If cost or maintenance is the goal, the regulated options are moving to a lower licensed weekly dose or a prescriber-planned exit with diet and activity support — talk to your clinical team rather than self-adjusting. Our guide to whether a week off is acceptable covers the reasoning from another angle.
08 · Stopping and restarting
Stopping altogether, and restarting after a gap
Stopping is your decision and nobody can force you to continue, but it is worth knowing what to expect. Because tirzepatide takes four to five weeks to clear after a final dose, there is a tail of effect before it fades, and appetite may then return.1 Nothing needs doing while it clears, and you cannot speed it up.
People ask whether they can stop cold turkey or take Mounjaro for a couple of months and then stop. Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average.
If a gap has become long enough that you are restarting, do not assume you can pick up at your last strength. Whether to resume at the same dose or a lower one is a prescriber decision, because tolerance and appetite can change when treatment pauses. Repeat orders on our service re-check suitability and there is no auto-shipping, so a gap is straightforward to handle.
09 · Reviews and results
How gaps interact with reviews and expectations
Treatment response is reviewed by your prescriber. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.4 A record full of unplanned gaps makes that conversation harder, because nobody can tell whether the dose or the schedule is the problem.
Early expectations matter too. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase, losses are usually modest, and most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward. By three months a sensible expectation on a standard titration is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation, and slower early progress does not predict failure.2
Beyond the scales, trial weight loss came with average improvements in waist size, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar measures. These are trial-average secondary outcomes rather than promises, but they are part of why prescribers treat weight management as health management.2 Consistency is how you give yourself the best chance of seeing them.
10 · Getting help
How to get advice from us
If you are an EverydayMeds customer, tell the prescribing team what has happened rather than waiting for the next review. Support is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat or by phone on 0333 207 0413. Ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and side-effect support are part of the service.
Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber (GPhC 9012878). It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, individual results vary, and this page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
If you notice a new symptom or a side effect you did not expect, discuss it with your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19 If you have a nearby question about this exact topic, our short guides on skipping a single week and how skipping works in practice cover related ground.
11 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
