How to check a pharmacy on the GPhC register

You check a pharmacy by searching its registration number on the GPhC public register, which lists registered pharmacies and pharmacy professionals.¹² It takes under two minutes and is the single most useful thing you can do before buying Mounjaro online.

Start by finding the registration number on the pharmacy's website. A genuine online pharmacy displays it clearly, usually in the footer or on an About page. Then enter it on the register. You are looking for three matches: the trading name, the website address and the registered premises. If any of these do not match, treat the site with caution.

Do not rely on logos alone. A badge or a padlock symbol on a website proves nothing about who is behind it. Neither do social media followers, influencer posts or polished reviews. The register is the authoritative record, which is why we link to our own entry (GPhC 9012878) rather than just asking you to trust us.

It also helps to ask a few plain questions of any provider. Who is the prescriber, and are they GPhC-registered? Will a clinician review my answers? What happens if the prescriber decides Mounjaro is not suitable for me? A reputable service answers all three without hesitation. Counterfeit and unlicensed products are a known problem with weight-loss injections. What Mounjaro is and what you are actually buying

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly.¹ In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.¹

This matters when judging a pharmacy, because a genuine product is a branded, pre-filled KwikPen from the manufacturer, not a vial, a powder or a product described only as tirzepatide with no brand or batch information. We supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, and all six doses are in stock.

When comparing prices between providers, compare the same strength like for like.

Two practical storage points are worth knowing. Unopened pens are stored in the fridge until first use and keep until the printed expiry date. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or has been frozen.¹³ For anything beyond that, such as an unopened pen that has been left out, check the patient information leaflet and ask the pharmacy rather than guessing.

05 · How it works in the body

How tirzepatide works

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.¹ Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. That is the point of the medicine: it makes a calorie-controlled eating pattern easier to follow, and it is used alongside increased physical activity, not instead of either.

This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic). Both are licensed, effective treatments, and which suits you is a prescriber decision based on your history and circumstances. For comparison, the Wegovy dose ladder is pens of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly, stepping up after 4 weeks on each of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg and 1.7mg, so the 2.4mg maintenance dose starts from week 17.

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days. After a final dose it takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. This is worth understanding before you start, because it explains why side effects, if they occur, may not stop the day you stop injecting.

Because the slowing of stomach emptying is part of how the medicine works, it can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.¹ That is one of several reasons your current medicines are reviewed before anything is prescribed. A reputable pharmacy asks about every medicine you take, including over-the-counter products, and does not skip this step.

The patient information leaflet lists the warnings and side effects, and your prescriber can answer questions specific to you. Anything unexpected can be reported through the Yellow Card scheme.¹⁹

06 · Who can be prescribed

Who can be prescribed Mounjaro privately

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition.¹ Qualifying conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you. Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. This is the clinical heart of a reputable service. If a website lets you add a pen to your basket and pay without any such assessment, it is not operating as a pharmacy should.

Eligibility is not a promise of suitability. The licence sets the outer limits, and the prescriber then considers your individual situation. Being declined is a normal part of safe prescribing, not a failure of the process. 07 · NHS versus private

NHS or private: the honest picture

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.⁴ NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁶

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Neither route is the wrong one. If you fall into an early NHS group, your GP is the place to start. If you do not, or do not want to wait, a regulated private pharmacy is a legitimate alternative.

A common question is whether people with diabetes can get Mounjaro on the NHS. Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes as well as weight management, so the answer depends on your situation and local prescribing arrangements. The practical differences between the routes are speed, cost and structure. NHS access is free at the point of use under its own criteria, but availability varies by area and priority group. Private supply is paid for, but is available to adults who meet the licensed criteria and pass the prescriber review.

Whichever route you choose, the same safety standards should apply. You should see a clinician, have your medicines reviewed, and be able to contact someone when you have a question. Mixing routes needs care. Do not obtain Mounjaro from two sources at once. If you move from private to NHS supply, or the other way, tell both prescribers what you are taking and at what dose so that the dose history is accurate.

08 · What results to expect

What the main trial showed

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.² These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.²

To make the percentages concrete, take a worked example. For someone starting at 100 kg, 15% is about 15 kg, 19.5% is about 19.5 kg, and 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is straight arithmetic on the trial averages, not a prediction for you. Trial averages do not predict your own result, and they say nothing about how quickly any individual will lose weight.

Why does this matter for choosing a pharmacy? Because a reputable provider describes results in these terms, with the trial named and the caveats attached. Be cautious of any site that promises specific results or shows dramatic before-and-after claims. Honest marketing for a prescription medicine sticks to published data and says that results vary.

Likewise, treat any dramatic weight-loss claims attached to supplements or unregulated products with scepticism. Products sold without assessment have no comparable trial evidence behind these figures, and low-cost supplements come with no clinical oversight.

If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £879.96 at standard prices. A first year of 52 weeks (13 pens) costs £2,399.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,279.88 at 15mg. These totals are before discounts: a new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.

Not everyone settles at the same dose, and the prescriber guides that decision. For other maintenance doses, use the monthly standard price: £244.99 at 7.5mg, £274.99 at 10mg and £289.99 at 12.5mg. Each of these is the price of one four-week pen before discount.

Weekly equivalents help with budgeting. At standard prices, 2.5mg works out at £42.50 per week, 5mg at £47.50, 7.5mg at £61.25, 10mg at £68.75, 12.5mg at £72.50 and 15mg at £75.00.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.¹
