Are GLP-1 Pills Effective? What the Evidence Shows (October 2026)

Yes, licensed GLP-1 pills work, though results vary between people and between medicines. In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo.22 Foundayo is the other licensed tablet. No trial has compared either tablet directly with Mounjaro.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Licensed GLP-1 tablets produce clinically meaningful average weight loss in trials, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. Individual results vary.
  • Two GLP-1 weight-loss tablets are licensed in the UK: Wegovy tablets and Foundayo. Both are prescription-only.
  • No trial has compared Mounjaro with either tablet, so separate trial averages should not be set against each other.
  • Practical differences matter: Wegovy tablets need a strict empty-stomach routine, Foundayo has no food or water rules, and Mounjaro is a weekly injection.
  • 'Natural GLP-1' supplements are not medicines and have no comparable trial evidence.

01 · The short answer

Are GLP-1 pills effective? The honest verdict

Yes, the licensed GLP-1 tablets are effective weight-management medicines, but they are not magic and they are not identical to each other. In large trials, people taking them alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity lost clearly more weight than people taking placebo. Averages hide a wide spread, though: some people lose far more than the trial figure and some far less.

Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) are supported by the OASIS 4 trial. In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo.22 76.3% lost at least 5% of their body weight (vs 30.5% on placebo) and 59.8% lost at least 10% (vs 14.1%).22

The newer tablet, Foundayo (orforglipron), also has trial evidence. In the ATTAIN-1 trial of 3,127 adults without type 2 diabetes, people taking the highest dose of orforglipron for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4% of their body weight, compared with 0.9% on placebo; the two lower doses gave 7.8% and 9.3%.23

For someone starting at 100 kg, 13.6% is about 14 kg. Treat that as a worked example of arithmetic, not a forecast: trial averages do not predict your own result.

MedicineHow it is takenFood and water rulesTrial behind the result
Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide)Once daily, tabletStrict: empty stomach, sip of water, then wait before eatingOASIS 4 against placebo

Mounjaro (tirzepatide)Once weekly, injectionNone: with or without food, any time of dayCompared directly with injected semaglutide in SURMOUNT-5

That table lists each medicine against its own trial. Only SURMOUNT-5 compared tirzepatide with another medicine head to head, and that medicine was injected semaglutide, not a tablet.15

02 · What to do next

The decision you are actually facing

Most readers are really asking whether a tablet or an injection suits them. A tablet appeals if you dislike needles or want a daily habit. An injection appeals if you prefer to deal with treatment once a week. Neither is automatically stronger for you personally, and a prescriber will check which is suitable for your health, your other medicines and your routine.20

Eligibility matters first. Both tablets are licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.2021 Mounjaro, being a different licence, is assessed separately. If you are weighing options, our weight loss clinic explains how a free online consultation works, and the Mounjaro pen page shows live availability: all six strengths are in stock, with the 2.5mg starting pen at a standard £169.99 per month (a new customer's first 2.5mg pen is £129.99 with code FIRST40).

Our guide to GLP-1 pills explained covers the range of tablets.

03 · A note on 'best'

What 'best GLP-1 pill' really means

There is no universal best tablet. The right choice is the licensed medicine you can take consistently, tolerate, and use under prescriber review. A strict morning routine suits some people and defeats others. Needle-free dosing with no food rules suits a different person. Our comparison page on the best weight loss pills sets these trade-offs out, and prescribers make the final call after reviewing your health questionnaire.

Anything sold as a 'natural GLP-1' is a different matter. Those supplements are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence.7 We cover that in our guide to GLP-1 supplements.

04 · What the trials show

What the trials show for GLP-1 tablets

The evidence for GLP-1 tablets comes from large placebo-controlled trials, one for each licensed tablet. They tell you something real: the medicines work better than placebo for weight loss when combined with lifestyle changes. They do not tell you exactly what will happen to you.

Wegovy tablets are supported by OASIS 4. In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo.22 The trial also reported thresholds: 76.3% lost at least 5% of their body weight (vs 30.5% on placebo) and 59.8% lost at least 10% (vs 14.1%).22 The gap between tablet and placebo groups on every measure is the point: it shows the effect is not just people trying harder.

Foundayo is supported by ATTAIN-1. In the ATTAIN-1 trial of 3,127 adults without type 2 diabetes, people taking the highest dose of orforglipron for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4% of their body weight, compared with 0.9% on placebo; the two lower doses gave 7.8% and 9.3%.23 Results were higher on the higher doses, and your prescriber chooses each person's dose depending on response and tolerability.

The trial used capsules, and the UK 17.2mg tablet corresponds to the highest trial dose, so the tablet and capsule doses are not comparable milligram for milligram.23 If you see a trial dose quoted online, do not assume it maps directly onto a UK tablet strength.

How should you read these numbers? First, they are averages across many people. Some lost far less and some far more, so treat the average as the middle of a wide range. Second, the trials had different durations, different populations and different doses. Third, the trial figures describe weight loss alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity, which is exactly how the medicines are licensed.

It is also worth remembering what a trial of this kind cannot show. It cannot show how you personally will respond, and it cannot tell you whether the weight will stay off if you stop. Real-world results depend on how consistently the tablet is taken, your diet, your activity and whether side effects force a pause.

For a worked example, someone starting at 100 kg who matched the OASIS 4 average would lose about 14 kg. That is simply the percentage applied to a starting weight. It says nothing about how quickly, and it says nothing about whether you will match the average. Judge your own progress by trend over months, reviewed with your prescriber, and see our broader guide to effective GLP-1 treatment for context.

05 · Pills versus injections

Are GLP-1 pills or injections more effective?

The honest answer is that nobody can say tablets are better or worse than injections from the evidence available, because the trials were not designed to compare them. Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection; Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are once-daily tablets. No trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet, so results from separate trials, with different people, durations and doses, should not be set against each other as if they were head to head.15

A number from one trial is only meaningful inside that trial's design.

So where do real differences lie? In the practical experience. Wegovy tablets need a strict empty-stomach routine every morning, Foundayo has no food or water rules, and Mounjaro needs a single injection a week.2021 Those differences decide whether you will actually stick with treatment, and consistent use is a large part of whether any medicine works for you.

Consider the mechanism too. Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide.1

If you take the injection route, you will be using a prefilled pen. Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. Each KwikPen contains four weekly doses.1 Some people find a weekly pen easier to remember than a daily tablet; others dislike needles and prefer tablets. There is no wrong preference.

The sensible way to choose is to ask which routine you can sustain for months, whether there are medicines or conditions a prescriber needs to account for, and what you are eligible for. A prescriber will check which option is suitable for your health, your other medicines and your routine.20 Our Wegovy pen and Mounjaro pages cover the injectable choices.

06 · Wegovy tablets routine

Wegovy tablets: how they are taken

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, taken as a tablet once a day.20 Because semaglutide is a long-established active ingredient, many people find the idea familiar, but the tablet has its own rules and its own dose ladder, so do not assume it behaves like the pen.

Eligibility comes first. They are licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.20 The prescriber reviews your questionnaire before anything is supplied.

The dose ladder is gradual. Treatment starts at 1.5mg once daily and steps up to 4mg, 9mg and then the 25mg maintenance dose, with at least one month at each dose; the dose can stay at an earlier step if needed.20 That last clause is important: you are not obliged to rush up the ladder, and a prescriber can hold you at a dose that works and is comfortable.

The daily routine is the part people underestimate. The tablet must be taken on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, swallowed whole with a sip of water (up to half a glass, about 120ml), and you then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other tablets.20 In practice that means taking it first thing, before breakfast, before coffee and before other morning medicines. If your mornings are chaotic, this will matter more than any trial percentage.

If a dose is missed, skip it and take the next tablet the following day.20 Do not double up to catch up.

For people already using the injection, there is a defined switch. People on the 2.4mg weekly Wegovy injection can move to the 25mg tablet, starting one week after their last injection.20 That is a prescriber-led change, not something to improvise.

How effective is this tablet? In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo.22 Whether that suits you depends partly on whether you can keep to the fasting routine reliably.

07 · Foundayo routine

Foundayo (orforglipron): how it is taken

Foundayo contains orforglipron, a once-daily GLP-1 tablet made by Eli Lilly, the maker of Mounjaro.21 It is a different medicine from Mounjaro with its own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results, and it is prescription-only.21

The headline practical difference from Wegovy tablets is simplicity. Unlike Wegovy tablets it can be taken at any time of day, with or without food and without water restrictions; the tablet is swallowed whole.21 For people who cannot manage a fasting morning routine, that flexibility is a genuine advantage, though it says nothing about relative efficacy.

Eligibility mirrors the other tablet. It is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.21

The dose ladder is more flexible at the top. Treatment starts at 0.8mg once daily, then steps up to 2.5mg and 5.5mg, and then to 9mg, 14.5mg or 17.2mg depending on response and tolerability, with at least 30 days at each dose; 17.2mg once daily is the maximum.21 The phrase 'depending on response and tolerability' is the key one: your prescriber chooses the destination dose with you, not a script.

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible, but never more than one tablet a day.21

There is an important contraception point. Foundayo may make oral contraceptive pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase.21 Tell the prescriber about any contraception you use during the consultation, and see MHRA guidance on GLP-1 medicines and contraception.7

How effective is it? In the ATTAIN-1 trial of 3,127 adults without type 2 diabetes, people taking the highest dose of orforglipron for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4% of their body weight, compared with 0.9% on placebo; the two lower doses gave 7.8% and 9.3%.23 The trial used capsules, and the UK 17.2mg tablet corresponds to the highest trial dose, so the tablet and capsule doses are not comparable milligram for milligram.23

Because the trials differ in design and duration, these figures should not be lined up against the Wegovy tablet results as a ranking. The Foundayo (orforglipron) page shows current availability and prices.

08 · Side effects and safety

Side effects and safety of GLP-1 tablets

The side effects of GLP-1 tablets are mainly digestive, and they are a major reason some people stop treatment. Knowing that in advance is part of deciding honestly whether the benefit is worth it for you.

For Wegovy tablets, the most common side effects are digestive — nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and stomach pain — along with headache and tiredness; gallstones and hair loss are listed as common.22 If you notice severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting, stop treatment and get medical help straight away.

For Foundayo, the most common side effects are digestive — nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting, indigestion and stomach pain.23 In the trial, 10.3% of people on the highest dose stopped because of side effects, compared with 2.7% on placebo.23 That figure is a useful reality check: most people stay on treatment, but a meaningful minority do not.

The same pattern is described for Mounjaro. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.1

Reporting matters. If you notice a side effect, or a symptom you did not expect, tell your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme, which is how regulators learn about real-world effects.19

Medicine interactions need a prescriber's eye. Foundayo may make oral contraceptive pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase. If you take other tablets, remember that the Wegovy tablet routine specifically asks you to wait before taking other tablets after your dose.20 If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, tell your prescriber, as doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar.

Finally, be careful where you buy. Prescription-only medicines are supplied only after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Anyone offering to supply a GLP-1 medicine without a consultation or prescription is a red flag, and the MHRA publishes counterfeit alerts.7 You can check any pharmacy on the GPhC register; ours is GPhC 9012878.12

None of this is a reason to avoid treatment. It is a reason to take it with oversight, to start low, and to treat a persistent problem as information rather than something to tolerate silently.

09 · Choosing the right option

How to choose between GLP-1 options

Choosing well means matching a licensed medicine to your eligibility, health and daily routine, not chasing the biggest percentage. A prescriber does this after a consultation, but you can arrive better prepared.

Start with eligibility. The two tablets are licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition.2021 If your BMI is below those thresholds, tablets are not licensed for you. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1

Then think about routine. Ask yourself honestly:

  • Can I take a tablet first thing, fasting, and then wait before eating, drinking or taking other tablets? If so, Wegovy tablets may fit.
  • Do I want no food or water rules at all? Foundayo has none.
  • Would I rather deal with treatment once a week? That favours an injection such as Mounjaro.
  • Do I take oral contraception? That is relevant to Foundayo (switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase) and to Mounjaro (switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase).

Next, think about what you will realistically sustain. A medicine you take consistently for months beats a theoretically stronger option you abandon in weeks. This is also why we avoid declaring a winner from separate trials.

It is also worth knowing what else exists. There is no tablet form of Mounjaro, since tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK.1 Other licensed options work differently: orlistat (tablet) blocks some dietary fat absorption and produces smaller average losses, and Wegovy and Saxenda (liraglutide) are other licensed injectables. Saxenda is a daily injection supplied at 6mg/ml, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy.

Natural supplements are not substitutes. 'Natural GLP-1' supplements such as berberine are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. They may be available cheaply without any assessment, but low cost is part of the problem rather than a benefit: there is no clinical oversight and dosing is not standardised. Our page on GLP-1 supplements goes into detail.

Finally, remember the process. Our consultation is free and reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. If a prescriber decides an order is unsuitable, it is refunded automatically. That safety net exists so you can ask the question honestly, including which option is genuinely appropriate. For a wider view, the best weight loss pills guide compares the options side by side.

10 · Cost, NHS and ordering

Cost, NHS access and how to order

Cost is a legitimate part of the decision, so here is the honest picture. Our cost-effective GLP-1 treatment guide explains how to think about value.

For the injection, prices are shown live. A 2.5mg starter Mounjaro pen has a standard price of £169.99 per month. After that, every later order is £25 off the standard price, with code DOSE25. Across the UK pharmacies we track, the cheapest starting pen was £143.96 and the dearest £179.99, checked 12 October 2026. Prices checked 12 October 2026.

What about the NHS? Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began with the highest-need groups first.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Your GP can tell you where you stand locally.

If you decide to go private, ordering is straightforward and the steps are the same whichever medicine is suitable:

  • Free online consultation: a short health questionnaire, no charge and no obligation.
  • Prescriber review: reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
  • Dispensing and dispatch: dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.
  • Delivery: free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled, discreet packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.

The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid with no hidden fees. You can pay by Visa or Mastercard, Klarna, or pay-monthly options, and there are no subscriptions. Repeat orders re-check suitability, with no auto-shipping, and ongoing monthly reviews are part of aftercare. Mounjaro is supplied through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution.

Planning a longer horizon helps too. At standard prices, if you step up after 4 weeks on each of 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg and 10mg, your first four pens cost £959.96. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. A new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order £25 less. Sums like these are why many people compare total cost of a year, not just the starter pen.

If you are ready to explore, the Mounjaro pen prices and consultation page shows live availability, and our weight loss clinic hub explains the wider service.

11 · Realistic expectations

Realistic expectations and what happens if you stop

Effective does not mean fast, and it does not mean permanent. Weight loss on these medicines is gradual by design, and honest expectations are the best protection against giving up too early.

The Mounjaro guidance illustrates the principle well, and the same patience applies to tablets. The first weeks on the starting dose are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest; most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend, not individual weigh-ins.1 The tablet ladders are similarly gradual, with at least a month at each Wegovy tablet dose and at least 30 days at each Foundayo dose.2021

Early experiences differ widely. Some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one, others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal. Early loss includes water weight, so the trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in.1

Treatment is reviewed. For Mounjaro, if you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.1 A responsible prescriber will have a similar conversation with any tablet user who is not responding, because staying on a medicine that is not helping is not good care.

What if you stop? In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average. Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber. For Mounjaro, tirzepatide has a long half-life, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system; there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 If you are thinking of stopping any GLP-1 medicine, speak to your prescriber first about a plan.

Why might weight rise during treatment? Fluid shifts, changes in eating patterns, missed doses, and simply the natural variability of weighing yourself can all matter. If your weight is going up while you are on treatment, raise it at your review rather than quietly stopping.

The takeaway is simple: effective GLP-1 treatment is a months-long process, reviewed regularly, combined with diet and activity, and worth starting only when you are ready to commit to that.

12 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Are GLP-1 pills effective for weight loss?
Yes, the licensed GLP-1 tablets produce clinically meaningful average weight loss in trials, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. In OASIS 4, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo. Individual results vary, and averages do not predict your own outcome. A prescriber checks suitability before supplying any tablet.
Are GLP-1 injections more effective than pills?
No one can say from the evidence, because no trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either licensed tablet. Results from separate trials, with different people, durations and doses, should not be set against each other as if they were head to head. SURMOUNT-5 compared tirzepatide with injected semaglutide, not tablets. The practical differences, such as routine and food rules, often matter as much as the averages.
What are the best GLP-1 pills?
Two GLP-1 weight-loss tablets are licensed in the UK: Wegovy tablets and Foundayo. Neither is universally best. Wegovy tablets need a strict empty-stomach routine every morning, while Foundayo has no food or water rules. The right one depends on your eligibility, health, other medicines and routine, and a prescriber will check which is suitable. Avoid 'natural GLP-1' supplements, which are not medicines and lack comparable trial evidence.
How effective is Foundayo compared with Wegovy tablets?
Each has its own placebo-controlled trial, but they should not be ranked against each other. Foundayo was tested in ATTAIN-1 over 72 weeks and Wegovy tablets in OASIS 4 over 64 weeks, with different people, durations and doses. The ATTAIN-1 trial also used capsules, so milligram doses are not directly comparable with the UK tablet. Choose on suitability and routine, with a prescriber's advice.
What are the side effects of GLP-1 pills?
The most common side effects are digestive. For Wegovy tablets these include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and stomach pain, plus headache and tiredness; gallstones and hair loss are listed as common. Foundayo's most common effects are also digestive. In ATTAIN-1, 10.3% of people on the highest dose stopped because of side effects, compared with 2.7% on placebo. Report any effects to your prescriber and via Yellow Card.
Do GLP-1 weight loss drugs work in the long term?
They work while you take them, alongside diet and activity, and trials measured results over many months rather than days. The tablet trials ran for 64 weeks and 72 weeks. If you are considering stopping, speak to your prescriber about a plan rather than stopping abruptly on your own.
Can I take GLP-1 pills with the contraceptive pill?
It depends on the medicine, so tell your prescriber about your contraception. Foundayo may make oral contraceptive pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase. For Mounjaro, switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
Are GLP-1 supplements as effective as GLP-1 pills?
No. 'Natural GLP-1' supplements such as berberine are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. They are available cheaply without any assessment, and dosing is not standardised, so there is no clinical oversight. Licensed GLP-1 tablets are prescription-only medicines with their own trials, dosing and eligibility checks, reviewed by a prescriber.
Is there a GLP-1 pill version of Mounjaro?
No. There is no tablet form of Mounjaro, because tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK. Two different GLP-1 tablets are licensed: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) and Foundayo (orforglipron, made by Eli Lilly). They are different medicines with their own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results, and both are prescription-only. Mounjaro remains a once-weekly KwikPen injection in six strengths from 2.5mg to 15mg.
