01 · The core answer

Who qualifies for Mounjaro on the NHS

NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4 The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions. Full rollout is expected to take years.6

RouteBMI requirementOther conditions
NHS (NICE recommendation)35 kg/m² or aboveAt least one weight-related condition
NHS (earliest rollout group)40 kg/m² or aboveFour or more qualifying conditions
Private (licensed use)30 or above, or 27 to 3027 to 30 needs at least one weight-related condition

02 · What to do

What to do next

Ask your GP whether your area is accepting your group yet, and what your BMI and conditions would count for. If you do not yet qualify, or do not want to wait, our weight loss clinic offers a free consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and you can see the Mounjaro pen and current prices.

03 · Ethnic background adjustment

Ethnic background BMI adjustment

People from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds are at higher risk of weight-related health problems at a lower BMI, so clinical thresholds are usually reduced by 2.5 kg/m² for these groups.4 Our guide to what BMI qualifies for Mounjaro explains the thresholds further.

04 · Private eligibility

Licensed eligibility for private prescribing

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines first.

05 · Who should not take it

Who should not take Mounjaro

You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber takes extra care, or may recommend against treatment, with a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems.13 Tell them if you or a close relative have had medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2.1 If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive.

06 · Local NHS variation

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Will my GP prescribe Mounjaro?
Your GP can prescribe it on the NHS if you meet the NICE criteria and your area has reached your priority group. The rollout began with the highest-need groups first, so some people who qualify on paper may need to wait. Ask your surgery about local access.
How do I qualify for free Mounjaro on the NHS?
You need a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and your local service must be treating your priority group. The earliest group was BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions. Your GP can confirm where you sit.
Why won't my doctor prescribe me Mounjaro?
Common reasons are that you fall outside the current NHS priority group, your BMI or conditions do not meet the criteria, or a medical history point makes it unsuitable. Ask which applies and when you might become eligible.
Does ethnicity change who qualifies?
Yes. For people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds, clinical BMI thresholds are usually reduced by 2.5 kg/m² because of higher risk at a lower BMI.
What are the private criteria if I do not qualify on the NHS?
Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or between 27 and 30 with a weight-related condition. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your history before deciding if it is suitable. Our Mounjaro pen page shows current prices.
