A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Weight loss injections are prescription-only medicines: nobody can sell them to you without a prescriber assessing you first.
  • NHS access to Mounjaro is being phased in over several years, with the highest-need groups first.
  • Private prescribing follows the licence: BMI 30+, or BMI 27–30 with at least one weight-related condition.
  • Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40; the standard price is £169.99.
  • Whether a particular professional can prescribe depends on their registration and prescribing qualification, so ask them directly.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Who can prescribe weight loss injections in the UK?

Only a registered healthcare professional with the right prescribing qualification can prescribe a weight loss injection, and they must judge it suitable for you first. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1

In practice, three kinds of service handle these prescriptions:

  • Your GP practice, under NHS rules for Mounjaro.
  • NHS specialist weight-management services. NHS access to Wegovy runs through these services; ask your GP.
  • A regulated private service with a GPhC-registered prescriber, such as an online pharmacy.

Job title alone does not settle it. What matters is that the person is registered, holds a prescribing qualification and is working within their competence. We have separate guides on who can prescribe weight loss drugs and on whether a diabetic nurse can prescribe these injections.

02 · NHS or private

NHS or private: which route fits you?

The NHS route suits people who meet its stricter criteria and are happy to wait; the private route suits people who meet the licensed criteria and want to start sooner.

03 · Getting started

How to get a prescription from us

Ordering from us takes three steps, and the consultation itself is free with no obligation.

  • Free online consultation. Complete a short health questionnaire through our free consultation.
  • Prescriber review. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
  • Dispensing and delivery. Our registered pharmacy dispenses the order, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery.

New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). All six doses are in stock. You can also see our guide to registering online for weight loss injections.

04 · NHS prescribing today

What is the NHS position on prescribing Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4 The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.6

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. If you think you may qualify on the NHS, start by asking your GP practice what is currently offered locally.

For Wegovy, NHS access runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP. Our guide to who can prescribe GLP-1 for weight loss covers the wider picture across these medicines.

05 · Who is eligible privately

Who is eligible for a private prescription?

A private prescriber follows the licence: Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition.1 Qualifying conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.

It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.11 That assessment is the real gatekeeper: meeting a BMI number does not oblige a prescriber to prescribe, and a prescriber can decline if the medicine is not right for you.

If your order is unsuitable, we refund it automatically in full. A declined consultation costs you nothing.

06 · Other professionals

Can other clinicians prescribe weight loss injections?

It depends on the individual's registration, prescribing qualification and scope of practice, not on their specialty label. A doctor, nurse or pharmacist might hold a prescribing qualification, but each must stay within their own competence and the medicine's licence.

You can also read whether a neurologist can prescribe weight loss medication, whether a PMHNP can prescribe weight loss medication, and who actually gives weight loss injections. The practical test is simple: ask the clinician whether they are able to prescribe this medicine, and check their registration.

You can check a pharmacy's registration on the GPhC public register. Ours is GPhC 9012878.

07 · What the prescriber checks

What does a prescriber consider before prescribing?

A prescriber weighs your BMI, medical history and current medicines against the licence before deciding.1 They also set realistic expectations. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages. Individual results vary.

For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. Your own result may be different, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

Treatment is also reviewed. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.1

08 · After the prescription

What happens after you are prescribed?

Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself.1 After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, and can then step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.

Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber guides the pace.11 Each KwikPen contains four weekly doses.

Our aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, plus side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order. Our free GLPTrackr app can help you track your progress.

09 · Cost of private treatment

What does private prescribing cost?

The consultation is free and the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees. The cost is the pen itself. A 2.5mg pen has a standard price of £169.99, and a new customer's first order is £40 less. Every later order is £25 off the standard price.

If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg, again before discounts.

For context, across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month depending on dose and provider (checked 12 October 2026). You can buy Mounjaro through our hub page, or compare all weight loss treatments. Payment options include Visa, Mastercard, Klarna and pay-monthly, with no subscriptions.

10 · Avoiding unsafe sellers

How do you avoid unsafe sellers?

Anyone offering to supply a weight loss injection without a consultation or prescription is not operating as a regulated pharmacy. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting problems.7

Before you order, look for a GPhC registration number you can verify on the public register. Ours is 9012878, and we supply Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens.

A legitimate service will always make a prescriber assess you first, and will be able to refund you if it decides the medicine is unsuitable.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Are weight loss injections prescribed?
Yes. Weight loss injections such as Mounjaro are prescription-only medicines, so a registered prescriber must assess you and decide they are suitable. That can happen through the NHS or through a regulated private service, where a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your consultation. Without that assessment, no legitimate pharmacy can supply them.
Who can prescribe Ozempic for weight loss?
Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. In general, any weight loss injection needs a registered prescriber who judges it suitable and stays within the product's licence. The licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg), and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss. Ask your GP or a registered pharmacy prescriber what is appropriate for you.
What are the common side effects of Mounjaro?
Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects, and they usually settle. Very common effects (more than 1 in 10 people) include feeling sick, diarrhoea, being sick, stomach pain, constipation, feeling tired and reduced appetite. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. Tell your prescriber about new symptoms, and report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
What are GLP-1 medications used for?
GLP-1 medicines act on gut-hormone pathways that help regulate appetite and blood sugar. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, and is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.
What disqualifies you from getting Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation. If your order is unsuitable we refund it automatically in full.
How much does a 2 month supply cost?
We supply Mounjaro, not Ozempic. A Mounjaro pen is one four-week supply, so two months is two pens. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), and every later order is £25 off the standard price. Prices checked 12 October 2026.
Why do people stop weight loss injections?
Reasons are individual. Some people stop because side effects are troublesome, and your prescriber can adjust or hold a dose. Others stop after a review: if you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss continuing, adjusting or stopping.
