A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro supports a reduced-calorie diet and increased activity; it does not replace them, and individual results vary.
  • Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, so plan regular, sensible meals rather than waiting for hunger.
  • Keep unopened pens in the fridge; once in use, a KwikPen can stay out of the fridge for up to 30 days (not above 30°C).
  • Tell your prescriber about new symptoms or medicines, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
  • After a final dose the medicine takes about four to five weeks to clear, and nothing needs doing while it does.

01 · The core answer

What should you actually do while on Mounjaro?

Treat the injection as a tool that makes a reduced-calorie diet easier to follow, not as a replacement for it. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is licensed for weight management in adults, and it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1

The medicine activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. The practical consequence is simple: you will probably need to decide to eat well, because hunger will no longer decide for you.

02 · Where you are now

Is this relevant to where you are in treatment?

Yes, whether you are considering treatment, in the first weeks, or settled on a maintenance dose. Early on, the main questions are about eating and routine. Later they tend to shift to plateaus, maintenance and what happens if you stop. Each stage has different priorities, but the foundations stay the same: regular food, regular movement and regular contact with your prescriber.

If you are still weighing up treatment, our weight loss clinic explains how a consultation works, and the Mounjaro pen page shows live pricing, with the starting 2.5mg pen at £169.99 standard and doses currently in stock. Prices were checked 12 October 2026. Every order starts with a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and ongoing monthly reviews are included.

03 · How it works day to day

How Mounjaro changes your day-to-day appetite

Understanding the mechanism makes the practical advice make sense. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, supplied as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen).1 It comes in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg. Treatment begins at the lowest strength and steps up, which is why the early weeks feel different from later ones.

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic). Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine.

What does that feel like in an ordinary day? Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals. A plate that once felt ordinary may now feel generous. The urge to graze in the afternoon or snack late in the evening often fades. For many people that is exactly the benefit they wanted, because it makes a reduced-calorie diet more manageable.

It also brings a new responsibility. When hunger signals are quieter, you cannot rely on them to tell you when to eat. Some people drift into eating very little, then feel tired or irritable, and put it down to the medicine. A better approach is to treat meals as appointments: modest, regular and made of foods you actually want to eat.

Because the stomach empties more slowly, the timing and size of meals can matter to how comfortable you feel afterwards. Read the patient information leaflet that comes with your pen, and talk to your prescriber if something feels persistent or worrying.13

The weekly rhythm is also worth noticing. Many people find the effect on appetite is not identical every day of the week, and that is a good reason to keep notes. A simple log of meals, mood and how full you felt gives you something concrete to share at your monthly review, instead of trying to remember. Our free GLPTrackr companion app, available on iOS and Android, is designed for tracking a GLP-1 journey, if you prefer an app to a notebook.

Finally, remember that dose changes alter all of this. Each step up means a stronger effect, so it is sensible to treat the first days after an increase as a time to be a little more deliberate about food and rest. Your prescribing team handles dose titration and follow-up assessments, and they would rather hear early that something feels off than late.

None of this means the medicine is difficult to live with. It means that living well on it is mostly about replacing hunger-driven decisions with planned ones, and that is a skill you can build quickly.

04 · Eating and snacks

Eating while on Mounjaro: meals, snacks and enjoying food

You do not need to force down large meals, but you should not stop eating either. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, and that supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 The aim is a modest, balanced intake of food you enjoy, not a test of willpower in either direction. If you find you can barely eat at all, or you feel unwell when you do, speak to your prescriber rather than pushing through.

Should you force yourself to eat? Not past the point of discomfort. Eating slowly, stopping when you feel satisfied and coming back to food later is a sensible pattern. What is worth avoiding is going without food for long stretches because you simply are not hungry. Regular small meals tend to be easier to manage than rare large ones, and a prescriber can help if your intake is persistently very low.

How many meals a day? Many people settle into a rhythm of a few smaller meals with a snack if needed. Our guide to what to eat on treatment goes further into food choices, and the pattern known as eating once a day has its own page, because it raises particular questions worth reading before you try it.

What are good snacks? A good snack is one that is easy to eat when you are not hungry and does not undermine the rest of your day. Think of simple, familiar foods in small portions: yoghurt, fruit, a handful of nuts, a boiled egg, hummus with vegetables, or a slice of wholegrain toast. These are everyday suggestions rather than medical instructions, and your own preferences matter more than any list.

What is the secret to enjoying food? Make fewer, better choices. When appetite is quiet, you can afford to eat the things you really like in smaller amounts and skip the things you only ate out of habit. Sit down, slow down and notice flavour. Many people find food is more enjoyable when they are paying attention to it, and less enjoyable when they are eating on autopilot.

Foods that do not go together. No food combinations are ruled out in the Mounjaro patient leaflet. If a certain food or combination makes you feel unwell, avoid it and mention it at your next review.

What is the number one food to avoid? A more useful question is which foods you personally find hard to tolerate, or which make it harder to stay within a reduced-calorie diet. Your own experience, plus your prescriber's advice, is a better guide than a headline.

The trial data support the overall approach. In the largest trial, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost more than those using lifestyle changes alone, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 That is the reason food quality matters even when appetite is low.

Drink enough fluid through the day as part of ordinary good habits, and keep alcohol modest if you drink, noting how you feel. If you have questions about vitamins or other products, see our page on supplements during treatment.

05 · Speeding up results

How to get the most from treatment without chasing shortcuts

The honest answer to how to speed up weight loss on Mounjaro is that there is no approved shortcut. The most reliable route is to follow your dose schedule, stick to a reduced-calorie diet, and increase physical activity, because that is how the treatment is licensed and how the trial results were produced.1

It helps to know what the evidence says people can reasonably expect. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary. They are not a prediction for you.

To put the largest figure in everyday terms, for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is a worked example, not a promise, and it describes a trial average at the highest dose over a long period. Many people lose less, some lose more, and the pace is not constant.

The same trial reported that at 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2 Notice that these results come from months of consistent treatment, not a few quick weeks.

So what can you control? Consistency is the main thing. Take the injection on the same day each week, attend your monthly reviews, and give each dose a fair chance before judging it. Your prescribing team handles dose titration, and a step up is a clinical decision, not something to rush because progress feels slow.

Plateaus are a normal part of the experience for many people. When progress slows, review the basics before anything else: are meals still regular, is activity still happening, has sleep or stress changed? Small, steady adjustments tend to work better than dramatic ones. If you are worried that the medicine is not working, tell your prescriber, who can look at your whole picture.

Be cautious about products marketed as a boost. Dramatic weight-loss claims on supplements and powders are not backed by the kind of evidence behind a licensed medicine, and some can interact with treatment. Read our guide to supplements people take on treatment before adding anything.

Finally, think beyond the loss phase. A trial of continued treatment for maintenance of weight reduction exists, and your prescriber can discuss how long to continue and what maintenance looks like for you.14 Planning for that early makes the long run easier.

06 · Activity and daily life

Activity, work and daily routine on treatment

Increased physical activity is part of the licensed use of Mounjaro, so building movement into your week is part of treatment rather than an optional extra.1 The trial results were achieved alongside diet and exercise, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 That does not mean you need a gym membership. Walking, cycling, swimming, gardening and playing with children all count.

Start where you are. If you have not been active for a while, begin gently and build gradually, and speak to a healthcare professional first if you have a medical condition that affects what exercise is safe. Because appetite is lower, some people feel they have less energy for harder workouts, especially when eating very little. If you feel unusually weak or unwell, stop, eat and rest, and let your prescriber know; if you faint, have chest pain or a racing heart, get medical help straight away.

Many people ask about working while on Mounjaro. For most, ordinary working life carries on as usual, and many people take the injection at a time that suits their week, such as the evening before a quieter day. Pick the day carefully when you start and after each dose increase, so that if you feel off you are not in the middle of something demanding. Keep snacks and a drink within reach at your desk, since a quiet appetite can mean missed meals during a busy day.

Shift workers, drivers and people in safety-critical roles should pay particular attention to how they feel after each dose and talk to their prescriber if anything affects concentration.

Social life changes too. Meals out, family occasions and work lunches can feel different when you are full quickly. A practical approach is to eat slowly, choose a smaller portion at the start, and not feel obliged to finish what is on the plate. Most hosts and restaurants are happy with a smaller serving, and you can always take food home.

Sleep and stress affect appetite and decision-making for everyone, with or without medication.

Travel needs a little planning because of the storage rules. Keep pens, needles and your leaflet together, and consult the patient information leaflet for guidance on carrying and storing them.13

Finally, track what works. A simple weekly note on activity, meals and how you felt gives your monthly review something concrete to discuss. If you want more structure, the weight loss clinic pages explain how our aftercare and reviews fit around daily life.

07 · Injection routine and storage

Injection routine and storing your pen

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection, so the simplest routine is the same day each week, following the instructions that come with the pen.13 Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every order from us. Follow the pen's own instructions step by step the first time and each time after.

The pen is a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen, and each strength is a separate pen: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

Storage is straightforward. Keep unopened pens in the fridge, at 2–8°C, until first use. They keep until the printed expiry date. If you have questions about an unopened pen that has been out of the fridge, check the patient information leaflet and contact the pharmacy rather than guessing.13

Once you have started a pen, UK KwikPens are licensed for up to 30 days (not above 30°C) out of the fridge. After that, do not keep using the pen, even if some medicine seems to remain. Beyond the tested window, sterility and potency are no longer assured, and the pen should be disposed of safely in your sharps bin.

If you miss an injection, do not improvise. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day — never take two doses within 3 days of each other.13

Deliveries from us arrive in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging by free next-day tracked delivery, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm. Saturday delivery is £14.99. Put the pen in the fridge as soon as it arrives. We supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution.

Be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. Counterfeit and unregulated products are a real risk, and the MHRA publishes alerts on them.7 You can check our registration on the GPhC register: our number is 9012878.12

Repeat orders re-check your suitability, and there is no auto-shipping, so you stay in control of when your next pen arrives. Monthly reviews, dose titration and follow-up assessments are handled by the prescribing team. Standard prices, for example £218.99 for a 5mg pen, are before discounts; new customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25).

08 · Other medicines and habits

Other medicines, supplements and habits while on treatment

Tell your prescriber about every medicine and supplement you take, because Mounjaro slows how quickly the stomach empties and that can affect how other medicines are absorbed.1 Disclosure is the single most useful habit here. A prescriber can see your full picture and decide whether anything needs adjusting, which is something no general web page can do.

Oral contraception. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 The medicine can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives, because stomach emptying slows.7 If you use oral contraception, discuss it with your prescriber before starting and after any dose change.

Insulin and sulfonylureas. If you take these for diabetes, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. This is a decision for your diabetes team and prescriber, and you should not adjust them yourself.

Antidepressants and other prescriptions. Many people ask about mental health medicines. We have separate pages on taking Mounjaro with antidepressants in general, with sertraline, and with amitriptyline. Steroids have their own page too: see taking it with steroids. None of these replaces a conversation with the prescriber who knows your history.

Mood. Regulators have looked specifically at whether GLP-1 medicines are linked to low mood or suicidal thoughts: the EMA's safety committee concluded in 2024 that the evidence does not support a causal link, and the MHRA keeps this under continuous review.17 Tell your prescriber about any history of depression, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment.

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.

Smoking and alcohol. There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual. If you drink, keep it modest and notice how you feel.

Periods and breastfeeding. Questions about taking Mounjaro during your period and about breastfeeding on treatment are covered in their own guides. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Speak to a healthcare professional before using it while breastfeeding.

Supplements. Low-cost supplements are available without assessment, carry no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. Dramatic weight-loss claims around products described as natural alternatives are not equivalent to a licensed medicine. Mention anything you take at your review.

The patient information leaflet lists the interactions the manufacturer wants you to know about, so keep it somewhere you can find it.13 If you start something new, whether prescribed, bought at a pharmacy or ordered online, ask a pharmacist or prescriber first.

09 · Side effects and getting help

New symptoms: when to get help and how to report

If you notice a new or worrying symptom, speak to your prescriber rather than waiting to see if it passes. The patient information leaflet lists the side effects the manufacturer has documented, and it is the right place to check whether something is a known effect.13

A symptom that is not on the leaflet list is not a listed side effect. That does not mean you should ignore it. Tell your prescriber about any new symptom, whatever the cause, so it can be looked at properly.

You can also report a suspected side effect yourself through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Reports help regulators monitor the safety of medicines across the UK, and you do not need to be certain the medicine caused the problem. Your pharmacist or prescriber can help you submit one.

Some situations should not wait. If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away. If you feel severely unwell, or have severe or persistent abdominal pain, signs of an allergic reaction, or symptoms that frighten you, get medical help straight away through NHS 111, your GP or emergency services as appropriate. Leaflet guidance on when to stop and seek advice applies, and your prescriber can go through it with you.

Side-effect support is part of our aftercare. Our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through account portal chat, or by phone on 0333 207 0413. Outside those hours, use NHS 111 or emergency services for anything urgent.

Dose changes are the moment many people pay closest attention to how they feel. If a step up is hard to tolerate, tell your prescribing team; titration decisions belong to them, and they can discuss whether to continue, wait or change course. Do not stay on a dose you are struggling with in silence, and do not adjust it on your own.

Keep a short symptom diary if something recurs. Note the day of the injection, what you ate and how you felt. That gives your prescriber useful detail, and it often helps you spot patterns yourself.

Finally, keep perspective. Most of the questions people have in the first weeks are questions of adjustment, and a prescriber can usually reassure you or change the plan. The important thing is to ask early, using the leaflet, your prescriber and the Yellow Card scheme as your main tools.

10 · Stopping and long-term plans

Reviews, stopping treatment and the long term

Plan the long term early, because Mounjaro is a medicine you take over many months rather than a short course. Your monthly reviews are where dose, progress, side effects and goals get discussed, and they are included with our service. Repeat orders re-check suitability each time, so your prescriber stays involved throughout.

If you decide to stop, or need to, you do not have to do anything special. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 What matters more is the plan for eating and activity afterwards, because appetite may return as the medicine leaves your system.

In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average, so stopping should always be planned with your prescriber.14 Ask your prescriber what maintenance could look like for you, including whether a lower dose is appropriate.

Remember also what the main trial showed: people on tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost more than people using lifestyle changes alone, with individual results varying.2 The habits you build while treated are the part you keep. Regular meals, movement and honest self-monitoring tend to carry over, whatever happens to the dose.

Cost is part of long-term planning. At standard prices, a first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 off the standard price. For other maintenance doses, the monthly standard prices are £279.99, £290.99 and £319.99. There are no subscriptions, and payment options include Visa, Mastercard, Klarna and pay-monthly plans.

On the NHS, Mounjaro is available, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.4 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice. When you are ready, you can start with the Mounjaro pen consultation.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Should I force myself to eat while on Mounjaro?
You should not force yourself past discomfort, but you should not stop eating either. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, so it helps to plan modest, regular meals and snacks you actually enjoy. Eat slowly and stop when satisfied. If you can barely eat, or eating makes you feel unwell, speak to your prescriber rather than pushing through on your own.
What are good snacks for Mounjaro?
Simple, familiar foods that are easy to eat when appetite is quiet work well, in small portions: yoghurt, fruit, a handful of nuts, a boiled egg, hummus with vegetables or wholegrain toast. These are everyday suggestions, not medical instructions. Choose what you enjoy and tolerate, and mention any foods that make you feel unwell at your next review.
How to speed up weight loss on Mounjaro?
There is no approved shortcut. Mounjaro is licensed for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and the trial results came from consistent treatment over many months. Take your dose on schedule, attend monthly reviews and keep meals and movement regular. Never take extra doses or shorten the interval between injections, and be wary of products making dramatic weight-loss claims. Individual results vary.
What is the secret to enjoying food while on Mounjaro?
Make fewer, better choices. When appetite is quiet, you can eat the foods you really like in smaller portions and skip things you only ate out of habit. Sit down, eat slowly and pay attention to flavour. Stop when you feel satisfied rather than finishing the plate. Many people find food is more enjoyable when eaten with attention than when eaten on autopilot.
How many meals per day on Mounjaro?
There is no set number of meals on Mounjaro. Because most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, many settle into a few smaller meals, with a snack if needed. The aim is regular, balanced eating alongside a reduced-calorie diet, not skipping food altogether. If your intake becomes persistently very low, tell your prescriber, who can advise on your individual situation.
What two foods should not be eaten together on Mounjaro?
No food is banned on Mounjaro, and there are no named pairs of foods that must not be eaten together. If a particular food or combination makes you feel unwell, avoid it and mention it to your prescriber at your next review. The patient information leaflet is the place to check anything the manufacturer does advise about eating or other medicines.
What is the number one food to avoid on Mounjaro?
A more useful question is which foods you personally tolerate badly, or which make a reduced-calorie diet harder to follow. Your own experience and your prescriber's advice are better guides than a headline. If something consistently makes you feel unwell, avoid it and raise it at your monthly review.
What should I not mix with blueberries or other fruit while on Mounjaro?
No food is banned on Mounjaro, including blueberries or any combination of fruits. Fruit can be a convenient small snack when appetite is low. If a particular fruit or combination upsets you, simply leave it out and mention it to your prescriber. For anything about interactions, the patient information leaflet and your prescriber are the reliable sources.
How long does Mounjaro stay in your system after the last dose?
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. Because appetite may return as the medicine leaves, plan your meals and activity ahead and discuss maintenance with your prescriber before you stop.
Where should I keep my Mounjaro pen while on treatment?
Keep unopened pens in the fridge, at 2–8°C, until first use, and they keep until the printed expiry date. Once you have started a pen, UK KwikPens are licensed for up to 30 days (not above 30°C) out of the fridge. After that, dispose of the pen safely, because sterility and potency are no longer assured. For anything unclear, check the patient information leaflet or contact the pharmacy.
