What to Eat on Mounjaro: UK Food Guide (October 2026)

On Mounjaro, eat protein at every meal, plus vegetables, fibre and regular fluids, in smaller and slower portions. No food is banned, but very fatty, fried or very sugary food and large portions tend to sit badly because the stomach empties more slowly.1 Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so aim for a sustainable routine, not a perfect food list.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • No food is banned on Mounjaro. Choices that suit a slower-emptying stomach make treatment easier and more effective.
  • Include a protein source at every meal. It protects muscle, and matters more as appetite falls on higher doses.
  • Smaller, slower meals work better than large plates. Stop when comfortably full, not when the plate is empty.
  • Keep fluids close at hand all day. If you cannot keep fluids down, get medical help straight away.
  • Coffee and tea are fine. Watch high-calorie coffee drinks and strong coffee on an empty stomach.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

What should you eat on Mounjaro?

Build meals around protein, vegetables and fibre-rich carbohydrates, keep portions modest, and drink regularly through the day. There is no official "Mounjaro diet" and no approved food list, and the medicine is licensed for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1

The reason is the way the medicine works. Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties.1 In practice most people feel fuller sooner. That makes a big plate of rich food uncomfortable, and it makes skipped protein easy.

02 · A simple structure

A practical plate for Mounjaro

A useful way to plan a meal is by proportion, not by counting. Let vegetables take up the largest share of the plate. Give protein a clear, visible portion. Add a smaller portion of fibre-rich carbohydrate such as oats, brown rice, potatoes with the skin on, beans or lentils. Finish with a modest amount of healthy fat, such as olive oil or a small handful of nuts.

Part of the mealExamplesWhy it helps on Mounjaro
ProteinEggs, fish, chicken, lean cuts of meat, tofu, lentils, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheeseSupports muscle during weight loss and is easy to skip when appetite is low
Vegetables and fruitBroccoli, spinach, peppers, salad, berriesAdd volume and fibre without large calorie loads
Fibre-rich carbohydrateOats, brown rice, wholegrain bread, sweet potato, beansProvides steady energy in smaller portions
FatsOlive oil, avocado, nutsUseful in small amounts; very fatty or fried food is what many people tolerate worst
FluidsWater, tea, coffee without heavy syrupsAppetite is lower, so less fluid comes from food

This is a way of organising ordinary UK food, not a clinical protocol. Your prescriber can adapt it if you have a medical condition, allergies or specific dietary needs.

03 · What to do next

Is this relevant to you?

If you are still deciding whether treatment suits you, our weight loss clinic explains the options, and you can start a free consultation for the Mounjaro pen, reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99).

04 · Protein and muscle

Protein at every meal

Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue. Protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance.1

The two levers are adequate protein — aim to include a protein source at every meal, which is harder when appetite is low — and resistance exercise two or more times a week.1 This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.1

When appetite is small, eat the protein on your plate before the rest. Soft, easy options help on low-appetite days: scrambled eggs, yoghurt, flaked fish, soup with lentils or beans, or a milky drink.

05 · Foods to limit

Foods to limit or take slowly

Nothing is banned, but some foods make treatment harder. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly.1 Smaller, slower meals work better.1

In practice, that means being cautious with:

  • Takeaway-style fried food, rich creamy sauces and greasy pastries
  • Sugary drinks, sweets and large desserts
  • Very large portions, especially in the evening
  • Eating quickly or while distracted, which makes it harder to notice fullness

This is about comfort and calories, not moral rules. The aim is a sustainable calorie deficit. You can read about specific foods in our guides on eating cereal, eating sushi, eating dates, eating strawberries and eating lamb. In every case the principle is the same: no food is banned, including bananas.1

06 · A day of meals

What to eat in a day on Mounjaro

A good day is built from regular, modest meals with protein in each. These are ideas, not prescriptions, and portions should follow your appetite and your prescriber's advice.

Breakfast: Greek yoghurt with berries and a spoonful of oats, or eggs on wholegrain toast, or porridge made with milk and topped with nuts. If mornings are your low-appetite point, a protein-rich yoghurt or a boiled egg is easier than a large plate.

Lunch: A big salad with tuna, chicken or chickpeas, or a lentil soup with a slice of wholegrain bread, or an omelette with vegetables.

Dinner: Baked fish or lean meat with plenty of vegetables and a modest portion of potatoes or brown rice. A stir-fry with tofu and vegetables works well too, as long as the sauce is not heavy on oil.

Snacks, if you need them: Cottage cheese, a piece of fruit with nuts, or hummus with vegetable sticks. Many people find that they snack far less, so treat snacks as optional.

If you want a calorie target to go with these meals, see our guide on how many calories to eat on Mounjaro.

07 · Fluids and drinks

Fluids, coffee and alcohol

Drinking enough matters more on Mounjaro than usual. Reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class.1 Keep water within reach through the day. Treat an inability to keep fluids down as a contact-your-clinical-team issue, not something to push through.1

Coffee and tea: There is no interaction between Mounjaro and caffeine, so coffee and tea are fine. Strong coffee on an empty, slower-emptying stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, and high-calorie coffee drinks are an easy place for the calorie deficit to leak. The "coffee rules" circulating on social media have no clinical basis.1

Alcohol: There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol. However, drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and alcohol adds calories that work against your goals. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Moderation is the sensible rule, and many people find their desire for alcohol drops on treatment.1

08 · Injection day and side effects

Eating around injection day and dose changes

Mounjaro is injected once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food.1 There is no "best" time of day: it works the same morning or evening. What matters is the same day each week. Many people choose a weekend morning so early side effects fall on days off.1

Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.13 On those days, keep meals small and plain, sip fluids, and avoid very fatty, fried or very sugary food. Lighter food, such as soup, yoghurt, eggs or toast, is often easier. You do not need to avoid food altogether.

Appetite changes again at each step up in dose. The ladder starts at 2.5mg and rises after at least 4 weeks on each dose, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.1 When you move up, expect to eat a little less and plan protein accordingly.

09 · When you cannot eat

What to do when you struggle to eat

If appetite is very low, aim for small, nourishing portions and prioritise protein and fluids over everything else. Eat slowly, stop when comfortably full, and have a protein source at each meal even if the rest of the plate is tiny.1

Eating very little is not a goal, and it can make the muscle-preservation problem worse. If you are persistently unable to eat, or cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away. Our guides on when you can't eat, the safety side of eating too little and practical tips for low appetite go further. For other medicines in this class, see what to eat on GLP-1 treatment, and for a shorter injection-focused view, what to eat around the injection.

10 · Exercise and pace

Exercise, pace and realistic results

Increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra. The evidence-backed pattern is regular moderate activity, such as brisk walking, plus resistance work for muscle. Start where you are and build. On injection days with early side effects, lighter movement still counts. Exercise also protects against regain if you later stop treatment.1

Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The early weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase, and losses are usually modest. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend, not individual weigh-ins.4 Your prescriber reviews your response, and our ongoing monthly clinical reviews are part of the service.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

12 · NHS and private support

Dietary support on the NHS and privately

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment.

Either way, the food advice is the same.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What is the best diet while on Mounjaro?
There is no official Mounjaro diet. Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the best approach is one you can sustain: protein at every meal, plenty of vegetables and fibre, regular fluids, and smaller, slower portions. Limit very fatty, fried or very sugary food, which many people tolerate poorly.
What do I eat in a day on Mounjaro?
Aim for regular, modest meals with protein in each. For example, yoghurt with berries or eggs on wholegrain toast at breakfast, a large salad with fish or chicken at lunch, and lean protein with vegetables and a small portion of carbohydrate at dinner. Snack only if you need to, and keep drinking water.
What should I have for breakfast on Mounjaro?
Choose something with protein that is easy to eat on a low appetite: eggs, Greek yoghurt with berries, or porridge made with milk and topped with nuts. A protein source at every meal helps protect muscle. If mornings feel too queasy for a full plate, start small and eat slowly.
Is there anything you should avoid while on Mounjaro?
No food is banned. However, very fatty, fried or very sugary food and large portions often sit badly because the stomach empties more slowly. Take care with alcohol, which can hit harder on an emptier stomach and adds calories. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol raises the risk of low blood sugar.
What is the best time of day to take Mounjaro?
There is no best time of day. Mounjaro works the same in the morning or evening, with or without food. What matters is injecting on the same day each week. Many people choose a weekend morning so that early side effects fall on days off.
How can I maximise weight loss on Mounjaro?
Combine the medicine with a reduced-calorie diet, protein at every meal, regular fluids and increased physical activity, including resistance exercise to protect muscle. Be patient: weight loss is gradual by design, most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, and the trend matters more than any single weigh-in. Trial averages do not predict your own result.
Can I drink coffee on Mounjaro?
Yes. There is no interaction between Mounjaro and caffeine, so coffee and tea are fine. Strong coffee on an empty stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, and sugary or creamy coffee drinks can quietly add calories. Social media "coffee rules" have no clinical basis.
What should I do if I cannot eat much on Mounjaro?
Eat small portions slowly, put protein and fluids first, and keep meals simple on the days after your injection. If you are persistently unable to eat, or cannot keep fluids down, get medical help straight away rather than pushing through. Dehydration is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class.
