A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Eli Lilly is the pharmaceutical company that makes Mounjaro, whose active ingredient is tirzepatide.
  • Mounjaro is a once-weekly KwikPen, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.
  • Semaglutide medicines such as Wegovy and Ozempic contain a different active ingredient from Mounjaro.
  • We source genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, and every order follows a prescriber-reviewed consultation.
  • NHS access is being phased in over several years, so many eligible adults choose regulated private treatment.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Eli Lilly makes Mounjaro

The manufacturer of Mounjaro is Eli Lilly, and tirzepatide is the active ingredient it developed.

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

For a patient, the question usually matters for one practical reason: is the pen in my hand genuine? A pen that traces back to Lilly's own UK distribution is the safest answer. Our guide to who makes Mounjaro stock covers how that supply chain works in more detail.

02 · What this means for you

What to do with this information

If you are weighing up treatment, the manufacturer matters less than three things: whether you meet the licensed criteria, whether the pharmacy is regulated, and whether a prescriber reviews you properly. Our weight loss clinic page explains how treatment works from consultation onwards.

Ready to look at cost? Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). You can see every dose on the Mounjaro pen page, with live stock: all six doses are in stock. Prices checked 11 October 2026.

04 · Tirzepatide and Lilly

Tirzepatide and the company behind it

Eli Lilly is the pharmaceutical company that makes Mounjaro, and the name on the product information, the pen and the licence reflects that. Tirzepatide is the generic name for the medicine, and Mounjaro is the brand. When you read a prescription, a label or a clinical guideline, you may see either name, and both mean the same product in this context.11

The brand and the generic name often confuse people. In the UK, the product people are prescribed is Mounjaro.

If you want a wider view of the industry, our guide to who makes the weight loss drugs sets Lilly alongside the other manufacturers, and what company makes GLP-1 covers the wider medicine class.

05 · How it works

What Lilly's medicine actually does

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).1 That matters when you compare products: they come from different active ingredients, so the maker's name alone does not tell you which suits you. Our comparison page, who makes Mounjaro and how it compares, looks at that in more depth.

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system — there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

06 · UK supply chain

How a Lilly pen reaches a UK patient

A genuine Mounjaro pen travels from Eli Lilly to a registered pharmacy, then to you, after a prescriber has approved your treatment. We receive stock through official LillyDirect supply, which means Mounjaro direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. Every pen we dispense is a genuine KwikPen, and we stock all six doses.

Our registered pharmacy dispenses each order. You can confirm our registration on the public GPhC register under number 9012878. Orders placed by 3pm are dispatched the same day, and delivery is free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled, discreet packaging. Saturday delivery costs £14.99.

This is why the manufacturer question matters. A seller who cannot explain where its pens come from, or who offers to supply without a consultation or prescription, is not operating the way a regulated pharmacy does. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, so a legitimate supplier always assesses you first.

07 · Price changes

Lilly's pricing and what it means for you

Eli Lilly raised the UK list price of Mounjaro in September 2025, as announced in a public statement.10 List price is what the manufacturer charges, and pharmacy sell prices can differ because of confidential discounts. That is why you will see variation between providers for the same dose.

Across the UK pharmacies we track, the cheapest and dearest Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month, checked 11 October 2026. We show our own prices live on the product page.

08 · NHS and private

NHS or private: who gets Lilly's medicine

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. The medicine itself is the same product from the same maker either way. What differs is the route to a prescription and the cost to you.

If you go private, the process is straightforward: a free online consultation, a review by a GPhC-registered prescriber, then dispensing and delivery. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.

09 · What the trials show

What Lilly's flagship trial reported

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 Trial averages do not predict your own result, and the maker's name is not itself evidence of how well a medicine will work for you. Your prescriber will help you decide what is realistic.

10 · Safety questions

Side effects, warnings and what to avoid

Read the patient information leaflet that comes with Mounjaro before your first dose.13 Common side effects are mostly digestive: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort affect more than 1 in 10 people. Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks.

Your prescriber will go through the warnings and precautions with you during the consultation.1 Be honest about your medical history and other medicines so the prescriber can judge suitability. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

If you notice a new symptom, tell your prescriber. You can also report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration support and side-effect support are part of our aftercare, and our team is available Monday–Friday 9am–5pm.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
