What Naturally Stimulates GLP-1? Foods and Habits That Help (October 2026)

Your gut releases GLP-1 on its own after you eat, and fibre-rich foods, protein, healthy fats and fermented foods are the usual natural triggers: oats, beans, lentils, eggs, Greek yogurt, fish, nuts, olive oil and kefir. The effect is real but modest, and far smaller than the licensed medicines produce. No food or supplement replicates a prescription.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Eating fibre, protein, healthy fats and fermented foods regularly gives your gut the best natural prompt to release GLP-1.
  • Greek yogurt is a sensible protein choice, but no single food is a proven GLP-1 booster.
  • Natural approaches support appetite control; they do not mimic the effect of Mounjaro or Wegovy.
  • Supplements and 'homemade Mounjaro' drinks are not equivalent to a licensed medicine and have no clinical oversight.
  • If you meet the BMI criteria and diet alone is not enough, a prescriber can assess whether treatment is suitable.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

What naturally stimulates GLP-1?

Eating meals built around fibre, protein and healthy fats is the most reliable way to stimulate GLP-1 release naturally. So the stimulus is the food itself, ideally eaten regularly and unhurried. For more on the foods involved, see our guide to what foods release GLP-1.

Food groupExamplesWhy it is discussedRealistic expectation
Soluble and fermentable fibreOats, barley, beans, lentils, chickpeasCommonly discussed in relation to gut-hormone releaseHelps fullness and gut health; modest effect
ProteinEggs, Greek yogurt, fish, chicken, tofuCommonly discussed in relation to gut-hormone releaseHelps you feel satisfied after meals
Unsaturated fatsAvocado, olive oil, nuts, oily fishCommonly discussed in relation to fullnessSupports fullness; energy-dense, so portions matter
Fermented foodsLive yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkrautSupport a varied gut microbiomeIndirect and hard to measure
Supplements and drinksBerberine, 'nature's Ozempic' productsHeavily marketedLow-cost supplement, no clinical oversight, dosing is not standardised

None of these rows is a treatment. They are ordinary dietary habits that support appetite regulation alongside a sensible calorie intake.

02 · Your next step

Is this relevant to you, and what next?

If you want better appetite control and general health, these food habits are worth adopting whatever else you do. If you have been eating this way and still struggle with weight, that is not a personal failing. Natural GLP-1 release works within normal limits, and for many people with obesity it is not enough on its own.

Adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition, may be assessed for treatment. Our weight loss clinic explains the options. If you decide to explore medicine, the Mounjaro pen starts with a 2.5mg dose. A free consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and food habits still matter alongside it.

03 · How GLP-1 release works

How GLP-1 release works in your body

GLP-1 is a gut hormone that your body releases in response to eating. It is one of the signals that tells you a meal is doing its job. Our explainer on GLP-1 release covers the process in more depth.

The hormone is part of a wider system that helps regulate appetite, slows how quickly the stomach empties, and improves the way the body responds to insulin.1 That is why food composition matters: what reaches your gut shapes the signals it sends.

Release is linked to meals, so it rises and falls through the day. You cannot hold it at a high level with a clever food choice. Regular, balanced meals give the system regular prompts, which is the practical meaning of 'boosting' it.

04 · Foods people commonly cite

Foods that stimulate GLP-1 release

The foods most often linked to natural GLP-1 release fall into a few groups, and the same ones recur in almost every reputable nutrition guide. Our pages on what boosts GLP-1 naturally and what stimulates GLP-1 production go further on each.

Fibre. Oats, barley, beans, lentils and chickpeas are the staples. Build fibre up gradually, as a sudden jump can cause bloating.

Protein. Eggs, fish, chicken, tofu and dairy are all useful. Greek yogurt is a popular choice because it is high in protein and easy to eat. It fits well in a balanced diet, but it is a convenient food, not a proven GLP-1 trigger. Choose plain versions over sweetened ones.

Healthy fats. Olive oil, avocado, nuts and oily fish such as salmon add satisfaction to meals. They are energy-dense, so small portions go a long way.

Fermented foods. Kefir, live yogurt, kimchi and sauerkraut support a varied gut microbiome. The link to GLP-1 is indirect, and it is better described as general gut health than as a hormone switch.

05 · Habits beyond food

Habits that support healthy GLP-1 signalling

Meal structure matters as much as the foods themselves. These habits are sensible, low-risk ways to support appetite control.

  • Start meals with protein and vegetables. It makes the plate more filling and keeps portions steadier.
  • Eat slowly. Fullness signals take time to arrive, and rushing means you can overshoot before they do.
  • Limit ultra-processed snacks. They are easy to overeat and rarely deliver the fibre or protein your gut responds to.
  • Stay active. Regular movement supports weight management and metabolic health generally.
  • Prioritise sleep. Poor sleep tends to make appetite harder to manage, although it is not a direct GLP-1 switch.

For a broader checklist, see how to improve GLP-1 naturally and our overview of GLP-1 naturally.

A simple 'natural GLP-1' plate is not a recipe so much as a pattern: oats or eggs at breakfast, a bean or lentil based lunch with vegetables, and fish or chicken with olive oil and salad in the evening. Plain Greek yogurt with nuts makes a reasonable snack.

06 · Supplements and homemade drinks

Supplements, 'poor man's Ozempic' and homemade Mounjaro drinks

Supplements and viral drinks do not work like a GLP-1 medicine, whatever the label claims. Berberine, 'nature's Ozempic' products and homemade 'Mounjaro' recipes are sold as natural alternatives. They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised.

Natural products can still cause side effects or interact with medicines you already take. If you notice a new symptom, speak to a pharmacist or prescriber, and you can report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19

Be wary of any seller offering to supply weight-loss injections without a consultation or prescription. Counterfeit medicines are a real risk, and the MHRA publishes alerts about them.7 Prescription treatment should come from a registered pharmacy; ours is GPhC 9012878.

There is also no natural appetite suppressant that stands comparison with a licensed treatment. Fibre and protein come closest in everyday terms, because they make meals more filling.

07 · Natural versus medicine

How natural GLP-1 compares with Mounjaro

Food nudges your own hormone release, whereas Mounjaro acts directly on the receptors. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1, which together help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 That is a different mechanism from eating more fibre.

The size of the difference shows in the trial data. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary. The treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

That is also why diet quality still matters on treatment. Food habits support the medicine, not the other way round.

On access, Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
How can I increase my GLP-1 hormone naturally?
Eat regular meals built around fibre, protein and healthy fats: oats, beans, lentils, eggs, fish, yogurt, nuts and olive oil. Add fermented foods, eat slowly and stay active. This supports your own gut-hormone release and appetite control, but the effect is modest and does not match a licensed medicine.
Which foods naturally trigger GLP-1?
Foods most often linked to GLP-1 release are fibre-rich (oats, barley, beans, lentils, chickpeas), protein-rich (eggs, fish, chicken, Greek yogurt), and sources of unsaturated fat (avocado, olive oil, nuts). Fermented foods such as kefir and kimchi support gut health. No single food is a proven booster.
Does Greek yogurt stimulate GLP-1 secretion?
Greek yogurt is high in protein, and protein is one of the nutrients your gut responds to after a meal, so it is a sensible choice for fullness. However, it is not a proven GLP-1 trigger on its own. Choose plain, unsweetened versions and treat it as part of a balanced diet.
How can I mimic Ozempic naturally?
You cannot truly mimic it. Ozempic and similar medicines act directly on GLP-1 receptors, which food cannot replicate. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss. You can support appetite control with fibre, protein, slower eating and activity. If you want a medicine-level effect, speak to a prescriber about whether licensed treatment is suitable for you.
Does the homemade Mounjaro drink work?
No. Homemade 'Mounjaro' drinks do not contain tirzepatide and have no evidence of producing similar results. They are low-cost, unregulated preparations with no clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised. Real Mounjaro is a prescription-only injection supplied after a prescriber consultation.
Are there natural alternatives to Mounjaro?
There are natural habits that support weight management, such as a high-fibre, high-protein diet, regular activity and good sleep. There is no natural product that works the way Mounjaro does. Supplements marketed as alternatives carry no comparable evidence, so treat them as unproven and discuss them with a pharmacist.
Is there a natural GLP-1 booster that works?
No single food or supplement is proven to be a booster. A varied diet rich in fibre, protein and healthy fats, eaten at regular meals, is the most sensible approach. Fibre from beans, lentils and oats is a good starting point. Be sceptical of any supplement presented as a powerful booster.
When should I consider a GLP-1 medicine instead?
Consider it if you meet the licensed BMI criteria and diet and activity have not been enough. Our weight loss clinic page explains how a free consultation works, and a GPhC-registered prescriber decides whether treatment is suitable.
