Medicines You Can Not Take With Mounjaro: UK Guide (October 2026)
The medicines that need the most care with Mounjaro are insulin, sulfonylureas and warfarin or other narrow-margin medicines, plus oral contraceptives, which can be absorbed less well. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, so it can change how quickly some tablets are absorbed.1 Always give your prescriber your full medicine list.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Insulin and sulfonylureas may need lower doses alongside Mounjaro, to avoid low blood sugar. Your prescriber makes that call, not you.
-
Warfarin and other narrow-margin medicines need a specific mention, because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying and can change absorption.
-
Oral contraceptives can be absorbed less well, because stomach emptying slows. Switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
-
No adjustment is needed for paracetamol, according to the product information.
-
Tell your prescriber about everything you take, including over-the-counter products, supplements and any other weight-loss or diabetes injection.

01 · The short answer
What medicines can you not take with Mounjaro?
The honest answer is that the product information focuses on medicines that need adjusting or monitoring, rather than a long list of banned drugs. The main groups are insulin, sulfonylureas, warfarin and other narrow-margin medicines, and oral contraceptives.113 Mounjaro slows how quickly the stomach empties, so it can affect how fast some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly when you start treatment or increase the dose.1
| Medicine type | Why it matters with Mounjaro | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Insulin | Doses may need adjusting to avoid low blood sugar1 | Tell your prescriber before starting; do not change doses yourself |
| Sulfonylureas | Doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar1 | Tell your prescriber before starting |
| Warfarin and other narrow-margin medicines | Absorption can change as stomach emptying slows1 | Raise it specifically; extra monitoring may be needed |
| Oral contraceptives | Can be absorbed less well because stomach emptying slows7 | Switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase |
| Paracetamol | No adjustment is needed1 | Use as directed on the pack |
| Supplements and over-the-counter products | Not standardised, with no clinical oversight | Mention them so the prescriber has the full picture |
Your own list of medicines, conditions and allergies is what the prescriber reviews. For a wider look at the same question, see our guide to which meds you can not take with Mounjaro.
02 · Your next step
Is this relevant to you, and what should you do next?
It is relevant if you take any regular prescription medicine, especially for diabetes, blood thinning or contraception. If you take none of these, the practical advice is still to disclose everything, including products you buy without a prescription.
The questionnaire asks about your current medicines so this check happens before supply, not after. If you want to see whether treatment suits you, read more about our weight loss clinic first.
If you are on treatment already and have started something new, contact the prescriber who looks after your Mounjaro, or your pharmacist, before the next dose. Our related guide on what medication you can not take with Mounjaro covers the same ground from a different angle.
03 · Stomach emptying and tablets
Why Mounjaro affects other medicines
Mounjaro affects other medicines mainly by slowing how quickly food and tablets leave the stomach. Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.2
That slower emptying is the reason the product information says Mounjaro can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly when you start treatment or increase the dose.1 So the moments to be most alert are the first doses and each step up in strength. The strengths run 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1
This is not a reason to avoid treatment. It is a reason to be open with the prescriber, who can decide whether any medicine needs extra attention. Our guide to medications you can not take with tirzepatide uses the generic name and covers the same interaction principles.
04 · Insulin and sulfonylureas
Insulin and sulfonylureas
Insulin and sulfonylureas are the best-known medicines to flag, because their doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar.1 Tell your prescriber about both, and about any other diabetes medicine you use.
Insulin and sulfonylureas can be used with Mounjaro, but their doses may need adjusting. Many people with type 2 diabetes use Mounjaro under clinical supervision, because it is also licensed for type 2 diabetes.1 The safe route is a prescriber-led plan, not stopping or changing a diabetes medicine yourself.
Sulfonylureas include medicines such as gliclazide and glipizide. If you are unsure which group your tablet belongs to, ask your pharmacist or check the leaflet. If you feel shaky, sweaty or confused, these can be signs of low blood sugar; your prescriber may need to adjust your diabetes medicines, so contact them.
05 · Warfarin and narrow-margin drugs
Warfarin and other narrow-margin medicines
Warfarin and other narrow-margin medicines deserve a specific mention to your prescriber. The product information names them because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying and can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed.1
A narrow-margin medicine is one where small changes in the amount in your body matter. That is why the advice is to tell your prescriber about everything you take, especially medicines of this type.1 The practical step is to make sure whoever monitors your warfarin knows you are starting Mounjaro or changing dose, so any extra checks are planned rather than reactive.
Your anticoagulant service or prescriber decides what monitoring you need.
06 · The pill and contraception
Oral contraceptives
Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives, because stomach emptying slows.7 If you rely on the pill, switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. This applies to the pill only; implants, coils and injections are unaffected.1
The MHRA has published guidance on contraception with GLP-1 and GIP medicines, and the prescriber can talk you through which precautions suit your situation.7 Ask for advice specific to the contraceptive you use.
07 · Other weight-loss injections
Other GLP-1 and weight-loss medicines
Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines. Semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) is a single-action GLP-1 medicine, whereas tirzepatide acts on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors.2 They are alternatives, not add-ons.
Liraglutide (Saxenda and similar products) is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. If you are switching from any of these, tell the prescriber exactly which product and strength you used last and when, so the starting dose is chosen safely. Do not run an old pen alongside a new one.
Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are oral GLP-1 products with their own product information.
08 · Painkillers, supplements, OTC
Paracetamol, supplements and over-the-counter products
Paracetamol needs no adjustment with Mounjaro.1 For other over-the-counter products, ask a pharmacist, who can check your exact products.
Supplements deserve a special note. Berberine, so-called natural alternatives and similar products are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. Marketing for them often makes dramatic weight-loss claims. They are not equivalent to a licensed medicine, and it is sensible to tell your prescriber about any you take. Our guide on which vitamins not to take with Mounjaro goes into that in more depth.
If you notice a new symptom after adding any product, discuss it with your prescriber and consider reporting it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19
09 · Alcohol, timing and food
Alcohol, timing and what else to avoid
There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar.
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 Follow the instructions supplied with the pen. Keep unopened pens in the fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away.1
10 · Conditions, not just medicines
Conditions and medicines together
Medicines are only part of suitability. Your health conditions matter too, and the prescriber considers them together with what you take. Our page on conditions you can not take Mounjaro with covers that side.
If you are weighing NHS against private care, NHS access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.4 Whichever route you use, the medicine review is the same: full disclosure, then a prescriber decision.
11 · How we check your medicines
How the check works with us
Our free online consultation asks about your current medicines, and a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers, not a scoring script. We are a GPhC-registered pharmacy, registration 9012878, and we supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply.
After you start, ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and follow-up assessments continue, and repeat orders re-check suitability, with no auto-shipping. That matters here, because a new medicine started halfway through treatment is exactly what the review should catch. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. You can read the combined picture in our overview of medicines you can't take with Mounjaro in the UK, or the related page on what medicine you should not take with Mounjaro.
