What Foods Have GLP-1? What the Evidence Says (October 2026)

No everyday food contains GLP-1 in a form that works like a medicine. Your gut makes its own GLP-1 hormone after eating, and protein, fibre and healthy fats are the choices most often linked with feeling full. Mounjaro acts on the GLP-1 and GIP receptors directly, which food cannot replicate.1 Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Foods do not contain GLP-1 as a drug; the hormone is made by your own gut, and no food replaces prescribed treatment.
  • Protein, vegetables and fibre are sensible choices for fullness, and no food is banned on Mounjaro.
  • Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment.
  • If you are on Mounjaro, protein at each meal, fluids and smaller, slower meals matter more than any single food.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

So, which foods have GLP-1 in them?

Strictly, none of them. GLP-1 is a hormone made inside the body, and foods are not a source of it in any useful, medicine-like sense. Pages that list "foods with GLP-1" are really listing foods that are filling, high in protein or high in fibre. That is a reasonable thing to eat, but it is a different claim.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors at once. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve how the body responds to insulin.1 If you want to compare the wider picture, our guides on foods with GLP-1 in them and what foods naturally have GLP-1 take the same honest line from different angles.

02 · Practical guide

Foods people reach for, and what they actually do

Food groupExamplesWhy it is usefulWhat it is not
Protein sourcesEggs, Greek yogurt, chicken, fish, tofuHelps you include protein at every meal and protect muscleNot a GLP-1 medicine
Fibre-rich foodsOats, lentils, beans, vegetablesBulk and fullness; supports regular digestionNot a way to copy tirzepatide
Healthy fatsOlive oil, nuts, oily fish, avocadoSatisfying in modest portionsCalorie-dense, so portions still count

"GLP-1 boosters"Supplements marketed as natural GLP-1Available cheaply without assessmentNot equivalents to prescribed treatment

03 · What to do next

Is food enough, or do you need treatment?

Food choices help anyone eating in a sustained calorie deficit. They are worth doing whatever else you decide. If you have struggled for years despite good habits, a licensed medicine may be a better fit than searching for a food hack.

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 If that sounds like you, our weight loss clinic explains how a free online consultation works, and you can see current prices on the Mounjaro pen page.

04 · Natural GLP-1 claims

Can you increase GLP-1 naturally?

You can eat in ways that support fullness, but you cannot reproduce a medicine with a shopping list. Your gut already makes GLP-1 as part of normal digestion. What changes with treatment is that the medicine activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors directly, which helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties.1

Many web pages blur the two ideas. They say a food "has" or "stimulates" GLP-1 and imply a drug-like result. Our related guides on natural GLP-1 stimulators and which foods increase GLP-1 follow the same principle.

Supplements sold as "natural GLP-1 boosters" are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment.13 They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. Be wary of any product promising dramatic weight-loss claims.

05 · Eating on Mounjaro

What to eat if you are taking Mounjaro

No food is banned on Mounjaro, including bananas, but some choices make treatment easier and more effective. Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids.13

Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food. Large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly, so smaller, slower meals work better. Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable deficit, not a perfect food list.

Here, the principle is simple: choose foods you will actually eat when your appetite is small, and make each mouthful count.

06 · Protein and muscle

Why protein matters most

Protein matters most because some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. The two levers are adequate protein, meaning a protein source at every meal, which is harder when appetite is low, and resistance exercise two or more times a week.

This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls. Eggs, Greek yogurt, fish, chicken, tofu, beans and lentils are all practical options. Eggs are a simple answer to the question "do eggs have GLP-1?": they are a convenient protein, not a GLP-1 source.

Increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra. Regular moderate activity such as brisk walking, plus resistance work for muscle, is the evidence-backed pattern. Start where you are and build. Exercise also protects against regain if you later stop treatment.

07 · Drinks and hydration

Drinks, coffee and hydration

Drinking enough matters more on Mounjaro than usual, because reduced appetite means less fluid from food. Vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class of medicine.13 Keep water within reach through the day.

If you cannot keep fluids down, get medical help straight away rather than pushing through. That is a safety issue, not a willpower one.

Coffee and tea are fine, as there is no interaction between Mounjaro and caffeine. Strong coffee on an empty, slower-emptying stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, and high-calorie coffee drinks are an easy place for the calorie deficit to leak. "Coffee rules" circulating on social media have no clinical basis.

On alcohol, there is no direct interaction, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and alcohol adds calories. Moderation is the sensible rule. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

08 · Night snacks and belly fat

Night hunger, snacks and "fat-burning" claims

No snack, drink or food burns fat while you sleep. If you are hungry at night while trying to lose weight, a protein-based option such as Greek yogurt or an egg is a sensible, filling choice, within your overall calorie target.

Likewise, no snack targets belly fat specifically. Weight loss comes from a sustained calorie deficit, alongside increased activity. Individual results vary, and rapid loss can cost muscle, which is why protein and resistance work matter.

For medicine-assisted results, the SURMOUNT-1 trial reported average weight loss over 72 weeks alongside diet and exercise, but trial averages do not predict your own result.2 Our guide to foods to stimulate GLP-1 covers the same snack questions in more detail.

09 · Supplements and vitamins

Do you need vitamins or supplements?

No supplement is required with Mounjaro. Eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight. Discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist.13

Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment. That is another reason not to stack supplements on top of your prescription without advice.

If you want to understand the biology behind the marketing, read whether we naturally have GLP-1 and what foods act as a natural GLP-1. Both separate the body's own hormone from medicines and products.

10 · NHS and private access

Getting treatment: NHS and private routes

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. With us, a free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically. Mounjaro is supplied through official LillyDirect supply, with free next-day tracked delivery.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What foods have GLP-1?
No everyday food contains GLP-1 in a medicine-like form. Your gut makes the hormone itself. Foods listed as GLP-1 foods are usually just high in protein, fibre or healthy fats, which help you feel full. They are sensible choices, but they do not replicate the action of Mounjaro.
What foods have the most GLP-1?
Practical choices for fullness are protein sources, vegetables, pulses and oats. Beware of pages that claim a food has the most GLP-1; they are rarely backed by clear, comparable evidence.
Do eggs have GLP-1?
Eggs are a convenient protein source, not a source of GLP-1 as a medicine. Including protein at every meal is useful, particularly when appetite is low and you want to protect muscle during weight loss. Eggs fit that purpose well, but they will not act like prescribed treatment.
How can I increase my GLP-1 naturally?
You can support fullness by eating protein, vegetables and fibre, drinking enough fluids and staying active. None of this is a proven way to match a medicine. Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment, so treat marketing claims cautiously.
What to eat at night when hungry and trying to lose weight?
Choose something protein-based and modest, such as Greek yogurt or an egg, and keep it within your daily calorie target. Smaller, slower eating works better than large portions late in the evening, particularly if you are on Mounjaro, where the stomach empties more slowly and heavy food sits uncomfortably.
What drink helps you lose weight?
No drink burns fat. Water, herbal tea and clear broth help you stay hydrated without adding many calories. Coffee and tea are fine on Mounjaro, but high-calorie coffee drinks can quietly undo a calorie deficit, and strong coffee on an empty stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux.
Are there foods I must avoid on Mounjaro?
No food is banned on Mounjaro. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly. Smaller, slower meals with protein, vegetables and fibre tend to work better. You can read more on our GLP-1 foods guide.
