The right option depends on your BMI, health history and whether you are happy to inject. No single option is best for everyone. A prescriber weighs your profile, your tolerance and your goals before recommending anything.

Two GLP-1 weight-loss tablets are licensed in the UK: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide, approved by the MHRA in June 2026) and Foundayo (orforglipron, approved in August 2026). Both are prescription-only and have their own dosing and eligibility checks.²⁰²¹

What does Mounjaro cost, and what does the price include?

Mounjaro costs £169.99 per month at the 2.5mg starting dose, rising to £299.99 at 15mg, as of October 2026. Those are standard prices for one pen, which lasts four weeks. How to decide in practice

Start with the question you can answer today: would you prefer a daily tablet or a weekly injection? If you prefer injections and meet the licensed criteria, Mounjaro, Wegovy and Saxenda (liraglutide) are licensed injectable options.¹¹⁸ If you want a tablet, ask your prescriber whether Wegovy tablets, Foundayo or orlistat fit your health profile.

In a head-to-head trial (SURMOUNT-5), tirzepatide produced greater average weight loss than Wegovy injections. Both are effective licensed treatments, and the headline number alone should not decide it.¹⁵ Tablets are different medicines with their own trial programmes, so their results should not be set against Mounjaro's as if head to head.

04 · How online ordering works

How buying weight loss medication online works

Buying weight loss medication online in the UK follows a clear four-step route when the pharmacy is regulated. Each step exists so that a prescriber, not an algorithm, decides whether a medicine is right for you. Prescription-only medicines cannot lawfully be supplied without that decision, whatever a website's homepage suggests.

Step 1: a free online consultation. You complete a short health questionnaire. It costs nothing and carries no obligation. It covers your weight, medical history, current medicines and any plans such as pregnancy.

Step 2: prescriber review. Your answers are reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. This is the point at which a prescriber can recommend a different option, ask follow-up questions or decline.

05 · Licensed weight loss tablets

Which weight loss tablets are licensed in the UK?

The licensed weight loss tablets in the UK are Wegovy tablets and Foundayo. Wegovy tablets are oral semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk and approved by the MHRA in June 2026. Foundayo is orforglipron, made by Eli Lilly and approved in August 2026. Both are prescription-only, and both come with their own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results.²⁰²¹

They are different medicines from Mounjaro. A tablet and an injection differ in how they are taken, the dosing schedule, the evidence base and the prescriber's checks. Because each has its own trial programme, their results should not be set against one another as if head to head. Only SURMOUNT-5 supports a direct tirzepatide-versus-semaglutide comparison, and that trial used Wegovy injections.¹⁵

If you are asking how much the Wegovy pill costs, check the current price with the provider you are considering, and ask what the consultation, follow-up and dose changes include. Treat any site that quotes a price without a prescriber review with caution.

Orlistat is the long-standing tablet option. It blocks some dietary fat absorption and produces smaller average losses than the GLP-1 medicines. Your prescriber can advise on figures and suitability.

Other licensed options include Wegovy and Saxenda (liraglutide) injections. Wegovy is once weekly. Saxenda is a daily injection supplied at 6mg per millilitre.

Supplements are not on this list. 'Natural GLP-1' products such as berberine are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. Dosing is not standardised, and a low-cost supplement comes with no clinical oversight. The name 'nature's Ozempic' is marketing, not a description of a licensed product, and dramatic weight-loss claims attached to these products should be treated as a warning sign.

Mounjaro tablets do not exist. Tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK, so a listing for 'Mounjaro pills' or 'tirzepatide capsules' is not a genuine licensed product.¹

06 · Why Mounjaro is an injection

What Mounjaro is and how it works

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.¹

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.¹¹¹

This dual action distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic). It is a design difference, not a promise of a particular result for you.

Dose steps and pen strength. Each pen holds four weekly doses at one strength. Your prescriber decides how fast to move up the strengths, based on tolerance and progress.¹

How long it stays in your system. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days. After a final dose it takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.¹

Storage. Store unopened pens in the fridge until first use, and they keep until the printed expiry date. Once in use, a KwikPen is licensed for up to 30 days (not above 30°C) out of the fridge. For anything beyond that, such as an unopened pen left out, check the patient information leaflet and ask the pharmacy rather than guessing.¹³

The medicine is well known, but it is a weekly pen, not a pill. If injecting puts you off, say so in your consultation. A prescriber can discuss licensed alternatives, including tablets, rather than pushing a single product.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary.

07 · Eligibility and NHS access

Who is eligible, and what about the NHS?

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.¹¹¹

A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable. That assessment is the whole point of a regulated online service. Honest answers matter, because they decide whether a medicine is safe for you.

Tablets carry their own eligibility checks. Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are separate medicines with separate prescribing information, so do not assume the Mounjaro criteria transfer. Your prescriber will apply the criteria that belong to whichever medicine is being considered.²⁰²¹

NHS availability. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40 and above with four or more qualifying conditions.⁴⁶ Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP. The NHS prescription charge in England is £9.90 per item where it applies, which is a separate matter from private supply.

Choosing between routes. If you fit the NHS groups being prioritised, ask your GP what is available locally. If you do not, or you would rather not wait, a private prescription from a regulated pharmacy is a lawful alternative. You can also do both: check your NHS position while exploring options, as nothing stops you asking.

If you do not meet the criteria. A prescriber may decline an order if your BMI and health history fall outside the licence. That is not a failure of the process. It is the safeguard working. If the medicine is declined at consultation, you are refunded automatically in full.

PCOS. Mounjaro is not licensed specifically for PCOS, but many women with PCOS meet the licensed weight-management criteria. Weight loss itself is a first-line recommendation that can improve insulin resistance, cycles and symptoms. Eligibility is assessed on the standard BMI criteria. Mention PCOS and any fertility plans in your consultation, because improving weight can restore ovulation.

08 · What the trials show

What do the trials say about weight loss results?

The published figures for injectable weight loss medicines come from large trials, and they are averages, not predictions. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. Individual results vary, and trial averages do not predict your own result.

Mounjaro (SURMOUNT-1). In SURMOUNT-1, a trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks. Lifestyle changes alone produced 3.1%.²

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.²

To make the percentage concrete: for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg.

Wegovy injections (STEP 1). In STEP 1, adults on semaglutide 2.4mg lost on average 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo. Of those on semaglutide, 86.4% lost at least 5% of body weight (31.5% on placebo), 69.1% lost at least 10% (12.0%) and 50.5% lost at least 15% (4.9%).⁹

Gastrointestinal side effects were reported by 74.2% of people on semaglutide 2.4mg, compared with 47.9% on placebo. Of those on semaglutide, 7.0% stopped treatment because of side effects, compared with 3.1% on placebo.⁹ These figures are STEP 1 results for semaglutide, and they should not be lined up against other trials as a ranking.

The head-to-head trial (SURMOUNT-5). SURMOUNT-5 was the first large head-to-head trial of tirzepatide and semaglutide for weight loss. In SURMOUNT-5, adults on tirzepatide lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy).¹⁵ Of 751 adults, at least 10% of body weight was lost by 81.6% on tirzepatide versus 60.5% on semaglutide. At least 15% was lost by 64.6% versus 40.1%, at least 20% by 48.4% versus 27.3%, and at least 25% by 31.6% versus 16.1%. Average loss was 22.8 kg versus 15.0 kg.¹⁵

Both are effective, licensed treatments. Which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice, not the headline number alone.

Supplements such as berberine have no comparable trial evidence, so no figure can honestly be attached to them.

09 · Safety, pregnancy and interactions

Safety checks before you start

Safety checks are a core part of any prescription weight loss medicine, and your prescriber will ask about them. Three areas come up most often with Mounjaro: pregnancy, contraception and other medicines.

Pregnancy and conception. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.¹

Oral contraceptives. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. This applies to the pill only. Implants, coils and injections are unaffected.¹⁷

Breastfeeding. Current prescribing information indicates minimal transfer of tirzepatide into breast milk. Discuss breastfeeding with your prescriber so the decision reflects your circumstances.¹

Other medicines. Because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, it can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly when you start treatment or increase the dose. Tell your prescriber about everything you take. This matters especially for warfarin or other narrow-margin medicines, insulin, and sulfonylureas, where doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar. No adjustment is needed for paracetamol.¹¹¹

Side effects. Like all medicines, Mounjaro can cause side effects, and most are digestive. The most common, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. The full list for Mounjaro is in the patient information leaflet. Read it before your first dose, and keep it to hand.¹³

If something new happens. Discuss any new symptom with your prescriber. You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.¹⁹

Which is safer, Wegovy or Mounjaro? Both are licensed, with their own side-effect profiles in their SmPCs.¹¹⁸ Suitability depends on your health history, other medicines and tolerance, which is why a prescriber decides.

10 · Avoiding unsafe sources

How to avoid counterfeit and unregulated products

Unsafe weight loss products tend to look convincing, so the checks need to be specific. Genuine prescription medicines come from a regulated pharmacy after a prescriber has assessed you. Anything outside that route carries risks you cannot see on the product page.

Check the pharmacy. Look up the pharmacy on the GPhC public register and confirm the registration number matches the website.¹² Ours is 9012878. If a site cannot give you a number, or the number does not match, do not buy.

Check the supply. We supply Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. Pens are genuine KwikPens, and all six doses from 2.5mg to 15mg are stocked. Ask any provider where their pens come from and whether they can explain it clearly.

Know the warning signs. Be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. Be wary of 'research' products, of compounded copies, and of sellers who promise specific results or dramatic weight-loss claims. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting problems.⁷

No stacking. Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed 'research' peptides (such as retatrutide, which has no UK licence), or compounded copies. These combinations have no safety data and no regulated supply chain. If something promises faster results outside a licensed pathway, that is the warning sign. Never run two GLP-1 medicines together.¹

Ozempic. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes. It is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. The licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg). So a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss, and anyone offering it without seeing a doctor is not following the proper route.¹¹⁸

Supplements. Berberine and similar 'natural GLP-1' products are available cheaply without assessment, but they are not medicines and are not regulated for this use. They have no comparable trial evidence. A cheap price is not a safety record.

Reviews and brands. People ask whether a given programme, such as Voy, works for weight loss. Judge any provider on checkable points: a licensed medicine, a prescriber review, a GPhC-registered pharmacy and clear aftercare.

If you have already received a product you doubt, do not use it. Speak to a pharmacist, and report concerns through the Yellow Card scheme.

11 · Switching and planning costs

Switching medicines and planning costs over a year

Planning a year of treatment helps you see the real cost before you commit. If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £879.96 at standard prices. A first year (13 pens) costs £2,399.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,279.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg.

These are standard prices, before discounts. A new customer's first order is £40 less with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). If you settle at another dose, work from that dose's monthly price: £244.99 at 7.5mg, £274.99 at 10mg or £289.99 at 12.5mg.

Switching from Wegovy or Ozempic. There is no licensed direct conversion between semaglutide and tirzepatide. Switching is done under prescriber supervision. Typically the previous medicine is stopped, a washout interval observed, and Mounjaro started at a dose your prescriber judges appropriate. That is often the 2.5mg starting dose, sometimes adjusted based on your history. Never run two GLP-1 medicines together.¹

Moving to a tablet. If you are considering Wegovy tablets or Foundayo instead, the prescriber decides on any transition, because each medicine has its own dosing. Do not stop or restart anything on your own.

Stopping. After a final Mounjaro dose it takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear the system, with nothing to do while it does.¹ Discuss stopping with your prescriber first. Treatment sits alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and those habits are what you carry forward.

12 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.¹
