Weight Loss Medication for 14 Year Olds in the UK (October 2026)

There is no Mounjaro for 14-year-olds: its UK weight-management licence covers adults only.1 A 14-year-old with concerns about weight should start with their GP, who can refer to a specialist children's weight-management service. For adults, a first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). Prices checked 10 October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults, not for 14-year-olds.
  • Any medicine for a teenager's weight is a specialist decision, made through the GP and a children's weight-management service.
  • The big adult trials, such as SURMOUNT-1, enrolled adults, so their results do not tell you what would happen at 14.
  • Online sellers offering injections to teenagers without a consultation or prescription are a safety risk and should be reported.
  • Parents who are adults themselves can see how our adult service works, from £129.99 for a first 2.5mg pen with code FIRST40.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Can a 14-year-old take weight loss medication in the UK?

Weight loss medication for a 14-year-old is not something a family can pick or buy online; it is a specialist decision made inside the NHS. It is not something we would supply for a child.

If you are worried about a 14-year-old's weight, the right first step is the GP, or the school nurse if the GP feels hard to reach. They can measure height and weight properly, look at the whole picture of health, and refer on where that is appropriate. Treatment of a growing teenager is judged on their own growth and health, not on adult rules.

The same is true of neighbouring ages. If you are comparing, our pages on whether a 14-year-old can have Mounjaro, injections at 13 and medication at 15 explain the same position in more detail.

02 · Your options

What options exist for a 14-year-old, and who decides?

The honest picture is that most routes run through a doctor, not a shop. The table sets out each option plainly.

OptionRelevant at 14?Who decides
Mounjaro (tirzepatide)No. UK weight-management licence is for adults1Not available to under-18s through us
Wegovy (semaglutide)Access runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GPNHS specialist team
OzempicNot a weight-loss route for a teenager: Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes onlyGP or specialist
Children's weight-management serviceYes, usually the first referral routeGP refers
Family-based food and activity supportYes, for almost everyoneFamily, with GP or school nurse guidance
Supplements such as berberineNot recommended: low-cost supplement, no clinical oversightNo one assesses safety for your child

Notice what is not on the list: any product you can order for a teenager from a website without a doctor looking at the child.

03 · Next steps

What should a parent do first?

Book a GP appointment and ask for a conversation about your child's weight, health and wellbeing, rather than asking for a particular medicine. The GP can ask about sleep, mood, eating patterns, family history and any symptoms. That context matters more than a number on the scales.

Go to the appointment with a few things ready: your child's recent height and weight if you have them, a short note of what they eat on a normal week, and what they do for activity. Ask what local children's weight-management services exist and how referral works. Ask also whether any blood tests or checks are needed.

Include your teenager in the conversation. At 14 they will have their own view, and support that feels like a joint plan works better than something done to them. If weight is causing distress, say so, because emotional wellbeing is part of the assessment.

If you are an adult reading this for yourself, our weight loss treatments overview shows what is available at 18 and over, and our free online consultation is where a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews suitability.

04 · Why adult data doesn't transfer

Why adult trial results don't tell you what happens at 14

The headline Mounjaro results come from adult studies, so they cannot be applied to a teenager. In SURMOUNT-1, 2,539 adults taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary.

Those numbers describe adults. A 14-year-old is still growing, and body weight, growth and development interact in ways an adult trial was never designed to measure.

This is also why a news headline about teenagers losing weight on these medicines needs care. Specialist trials in young people are run under close supervision with doctors monitoring growth and health, which is a different setting from buying a pen online. If you see such a headline, take it to the GP rather than treating it as a shopping list.

05 · Mounjaro's adult criteria

What Mounjaro's adult criteria actually say

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1 It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber assesses BMI, medical history and current medicines first.

Every part of that sentence is written for adults. Adult BMI cut-offs are not how a teenager's weight is judged, so a 14-year-old cannot be said to "meet the criteria" however high a calculator output looks.

On the NHS side, Mounjaro is available, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.46 That rollout is about adults too.

For slightly older teenagers the position is the same until 18. You can read how it applies at each age in our pages on 15-year-olds, 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds, and the question of safety at 16.

06 · Is GLP-1 safe for teens?

Are GLP-1 medicines safe for teenagers?

The answer belongs with a specialist who knows the individual child.

Tirzepatide works on two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, helping regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 Slower stomach emptying is why other medicines can be absorbed differently, so a prescriber must know everything a person takes.1

Regulators have looked specifically at whether GLP-1 medicines are linked to low mood or suicidal thoughts: the EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence and concluded in 2024 that it does not support a causal link, and the MHRA keeps this under continuous review. Any big change in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel, so tell your prescriber about any history of depression.17 If a young person is low, anxious or struggling with food, that needs a doctor's attention before any medicine.

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.

Any suspected side effect from any medicine can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, by a parent as well as a professional.19 Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

07 · Ozempic, Wegovy and others

What about Ozempic, Wegovy and a "kids version"?

There is no Ozempic for children to take for weight loss on a private order, and no "kids version" you can buy online. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply it for weight loss. Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide, a single-action GLP-1 medicine, unlike Mounjaro's dual action.1 They are different products with different jobs.

Wegovy's adult dose ladder runs 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly, stepping up after at least four weeks to reach 2.4mg from week 17.18 That is the adult schedule. For a teenager, any use of Wegovy would sit within specialist care, and NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services, so ask your GP.

Saxenda contains liraglutide and is a daily injection supplied at 6mg per millilitre, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. For what any of these means for a young person, figures vary and your prescriber can advise.

We cover the adult comparison in our overview of all weight loss treatments.

08 · Retatrutide and unlicensed drugs

Can a 12 or 14-year-old take retatrutide?

No. Retatrutide is a medicine in development and is unlicensed in the UK, so it cannot be legitimately prescribed or sold for anyone, let alone a child. Anything advertised as retatrutide online is not a regulated UK medicine.

The same goes for the "research chemical" style vials and unbranded injections that circulate on social media. Their contents are unknown, and nobody has checked them for the person receiving them. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for exactly these risks.7

If a teenager has found a seller who will supply an injection without a consultation or prescription, treat that as a warning sign, not a bargain. Keep any packaging, do not use the product, and speak to the GP or a pharmacist. A genuine UK service is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber and can be checked on the GPhC register.

09 · What helps a teenager

What helps a 14-year-old with weight, day to day?

The things that help most are family-wide and unglamorous: regular meals, fewer sugary drinks, more movement the teenager actually enjoys, decent sleep and a calm approach to food. These are habits, not clinical treatments, and they work best when the whole household shares them rather than one child being singled out.

Some practical ideas parents can try:

  • Eat together where you can, and keep regular meal times so grazing is less likely.
  • Keep water and simple snacks easy to reach, and keep sugary drinks as an occasional choice.
  • Find an activity with friends or family, such as walking, cycling, swimming or a team sport, so it feels social rather than a punishment.
  • Avoid commenting on body shape or putting a teenager on a restrictive diet; talk about energy, health and enjoyment instead.
  • Watch for signs of low mood, secrecy around food or extreme restriction, and raise them with the GP promptly. If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away.

A children's weight-management service, if the GP refers you, adds structured support from professionals who work with young people and families. It is worth asking about even if your child is not at a high weight, as the aim is health and confidence, not a particular figure.

10 · Online sellers and consent

How to spot an unsafe online seller

A legitimate UK pharmacy will never offer a prescription weight loss injection to a child on the strength of a quick form, and neither should anyone else. If a website appears to, it is not operating as a safe pharmacy.

Signs to watch for include sellers offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, prices far below what regulated services charge, no visible pharmacy registration, and dramatic weight-loss claims. Pharmacies in Great Britain should appear on the GPhC register, which anyone can search.12

11 · If you're an adult

If you are an adult looking for yourself

For adults who meet the licensed criteria, the Mounjaro pen is available with a free online consultation. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), and every later order is £25 off the standard price, applied automatically (code DOSE25). All six doses are in stock, sourced through official LillyDirect supply, and delivery is free and next-day when you order by 3pm for same-day dispatch.

Across the UK pharmacies we track, a Mounjaro pen at any dose ranges from £143.96 to £339.00 per month (checked 10 October 2026).

Ordering takes three steps: complete the free health questionnaire, have a GPhC-registered prescriber review it, then receive your dispensed pen in temperature-controlled packaging. Ongoing monthly reviews are included. Payment by Visa, Mastercard or Klarna is available, with no subscriptions.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What weight loss meds can a 14-year-old take?
There is no weight loss medicine you can buy online for a 14-year-old. Any prescription medicine for a teenager's weight is a specialist decision made through the NHS, starting with the GP and a children's weight-management service. Mounjaro is licensed for adults only, so it is not an option at 14.
Can a 14 year old take Mounjaro for weight loss?
No. Mounjaro's UK weight-management licence covers adults, with eligibility based on adult BMI thresholds and use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. It is not something we would supply for a 14-year-old. A GP can talk through suitable support and referral options for a teenager.
Can 14 year olds take Ozempic?
Ozempic is not a route to weight loss for a 14-year-old, and you cannot buy it for a child online. Semaglutide medicines are prescription-only and any use in a young person sits with specialist doctors. If you are worried about your child's weight, start by booking a GP appointment.
Is there a kids version of Ozempic?
There is no kids version of Ozempic or Mounjaro that families can order privately. Where a medicine is considered for a young person, it is decided by a specialist team after a full assessment. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services, so ask your GP what exists locally.
What helps a 14-year-old lose weight?
Family-wide habits help most: regular meals, fewer sugary drinks, enjoyable activity, good sleep and a supportive, non-judgemental approach. A GP can check overall health and refer to a children's weight-management service. Avoid strict diets or comments on body shape, and raise any worries about mood or eating with the GP.
Can a 12 year old take retatrutide?
No. Retatrutide is a medicine in development and is not licensed in the UK, so it cannot legitimately be prescribed or sold to anyone, including a 12-year-old. Products sold online under that name are not regulated UK medicines. Report them via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme and speak to a pharmacist or GP.
Is GLP-1 safe for teenagers?
Teen use belongs with a specialist who can assess the individual child, including growth and mental health. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to the back, pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. Report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, and never obtain these medicines without a prescription.
What can a 12 year old take to lose weight?
A 12-year-old should not take supplements or medicines to lose weight without a doctor. Low-cost supplements have no clinical oversight and dosing is not standardised. The safe first step is a GP appointment, where growth and health can be checked and a children's weight-management referral discussed.
Is Wegovy safe for teenagers?
Whether Wegovy is suitable for a teenager is a specialist judgement made for the individual child. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.
