Tirzepatide Prescription Status in the UK (October 2026)

Tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro, is a prescription-only medicine in the UK: you cannot legally buy it over the counter, and it is supplied only after a prescriber has reviewed your health. It is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years, so many adults use regulated private treatment. A first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). Prices checked 11 October 2026.

01 · The short answer

Is tirzepatide prescription-only in the UK?

Yes. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, and it is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 Prescription-only means a prescriber must decide it is suitable for you before any pharmacy can dispense it.

In practice that applies whether the prescriber is your GP, an NHS specialist service or a private online prescriber. Our own route works the same way: Mounjaro is supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1 If you want the legal detail, our guide on whether Mounjaro is prescription only goes through it, and the prescription-only medicine classification page covers what POM status means.

The same rule explains why a pharmacy that says no prescription is needed should not be trusted. A legitimate service will always ask about your health, your current medicines and your weight history first. Our page on whether a tirzepatide prescription is required covers this from the buyer's side.

02 · Your two routes

NHS or private: which route fits you?

Both routes lead to the same medicine, but they differ in who qualifies and how long you may wait. On the NHS, Mounjaro is available, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4 The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.6

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.6 Local availability can differ, so your GP practice is the right place to ask where you sit in the NHS queue.

If you qualify privately, the Mounjaro pen costs £169.99 at the 2.5mg starting dose, and all six doses are in stock. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). For the wider picture see our Mounjaro prescription cost guide.

03 · Getting a prescription

How to get a tirzepatide prescription privately

The process takes three steps, and the consultation is free. The price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees.

  • Free online consultation: a short health questionnaire, no charge and no obligation.
  • Prescriber review: a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
  • Dispensing and delivery: our registered pharmacy dispenses it, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging.

You can start your free consultation at any time. Our weight loss prescription page explains the wider options, and you can compare them in all weight loss treatments.

04 · Who is eligible

Who can be prescribed tirzepatide?

For private weight-management prescribing, Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1

It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.1 Meeting the BMI threshold does not mean you will automatically be approved, and a prescriber can decline if the medicine is not right for you.

NHS criteria are narrower because of the phased rollout. NICE recommends tirzepatide for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the first NHS groups were those with the highest need.46 Our guide to tirzepatide availability and prescription requirements covers this in more detail.

05 · What tirzepatide is

What tirzepatide is and how it differs from Ozempic

Tirzepatide is not Ozempic. Ozempic contains semaglutide, whereas tirzepatide is the active ingredient in Mounjaro. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes. It is not a UK weight-loss medicine, prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss. Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1, which together help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1

That dual action is what distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic). Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

Which medicine suits you is not a question a single number answers. SURMOUNT-5 is the first large head-to-head trial comparing tirzepatide with semaglutide for obesity,15 and your prescriber can discuss which medicine suits your health. Our treatment comparison sets the options out side by side.

Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

06 · What trials show

What the main trial showed, and how to read it

In SURMOUNT-1, a trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg, but trial averages do not predict your own result.

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2

Your prescriber will review your progress at each monthly check-in.

07 · Safety and side effects

Safety, side effects and long-term questions

Like all medicines, Mounjaro can cause side effects, and most are digestive. The most common, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts.13 Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. Read the patient leaflet before your first injection.

Questions such as "is it bad for your organs" or "what are the long-term effects" are exactly why a prescription is required. A prescriber reviews your medical history and current medicines before approving treatment, and ongoing reviews check that it remains suitable. If you notice a new symptom, tell your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

08 · Avoiding unsafe supply

Spotting unsafe or unregulated supply

Because tirzepatide is prescription-only, any seller offering to supply it without a consultation or prescription is operating outside the rules. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting problems.7

Check that the pharmacy appears on the GPhC register. Ours is registration 9012878.12 We supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, sourced directly from Eli Lilly's UK distribution.

Be wary of products marketed as a "poor man's Ozempic" or "nature's Ozempic". These are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and they are not the same as a prescribed medicine. Their dosing is not standardised, and claims of dramatic weight loss should be treated with caution.

09 · After you are prescribed

What happens after your prescription

A prescription is the start of ongoing care, not a one-off. With us, ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and follow-up assessments are carried out by the prescribing team, with side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping.

Treatment usually starts at 2.5mg and moves through the six strengths as your prescriber advises. If you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, a first year costs £2,711.88 at standard prices, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.

Support runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, account portal chat or phone on 0333 207 0413. The free GLPTrackr app helps you track your journey. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order, and you can compare the best price for a tirzepatide prescription before you start. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary, and this page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is tirzepatide a prescription-only medicine in the UK?
Yes. Tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro, is prescription-only in the UK. It is supplied only after a consultation reviewed by a prescriber, who checks your BMI, medical history and current medicines. It is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. Anyone offering it without a consultation or prescription is not operating legitimately.
Is tirzepatide available on the NHS?
Yes, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions. Ask your GP where you sit.
Is Ozempic a tirzepatide?
No. Ozempic contains semaglutide, a single-action GLP-1 medicine. Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss, so a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply it for weight loss; a prescriber decides which licensed medicine, if any, suits you.
Is tirzepatide different from Ozempic in how it works?
They are different medicines, so there is no simple answer. Tirzepatide acts on two receptors (GIP and GLP-1), while semaglutide acts on one. SURMOUNT-5 is the first large head-to-head trial comparing tirzepatide with semaglutide for obesity. Your prescriber can explain which suits your health and goals.
Is 10 mg of tirzepatide a lot?
10mg is the fourth of six Mounjaro strengths (2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5 and 15mg). In SURMOUNT-1, average weight loss on 10mg was 19.5% over 72 weeks. Individual results vary, and your prescriber sets your dose.
How soon will I notice tirzepatide working?
Experiences differ widely: some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one, others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal. Weight loss is gradual, with most measurable progress building from 5mg onward, month by month; trials such as SURMOUNT-1 measured results at 72 weeks. Your prescriber reviews your progress monthly, so raise any concerns at those reviews.
What are the long-term effects of tirzepatide?
The most common side effects, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain, pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. A prescriber reviews your history before approving treatment and checks suitability at each repeat order. Report any new symptom to your prescriber and through the Yellow Card scheme.
What is known as the poor man's Ozempic?
The phrase is marketing for low-cost supplements such as berberine, sometimes called nature's Ozempic. They are available cheaply without assessment, with no clinical oversight and non-standardised dosing. They are not the same as prescribed tirzepatide or semaglutide, and dramatic weight-loss claims should be treated with caution.
