01 · The verdict
Which prescription appetite suppressant suits you?
In SURMOUNT-1, 2,539 adults on tirzepatide plus diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, against 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary.
Mounjaro works differently from single-action medicines. Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. This helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties, so most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 Wegovy (semaglutide) is the other main weekly injection. It is an effective licensed treatment, and which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice.
| Option | How it is taken | What is known |
|---|---|---|
| Mounjaro (tirzepatide) | Once-weekly pen, six strengths from 2.5mg to 15mg | Dual GIP/GLP-1 action; SURMOUNT-1 averages up to 20.9% at 15mg over 72 weeks |
| Wegovy (semaglutide) | Once-weekly pen, 0.25mg up to 2.4mg | Single-action GLP-1; reaches 2.4mg maintenance from week 17 |
| Liraglutide (Saxenda, Erly) | Daily injection, 6mg per ml | Daily rather than weekly; figures vary, so ask your prescriber |
| Supplements and 'natural' products | Various | Low-cost supplement, no clinical oversight; dosing is not standardised |
02 · Cost and access
What it costs and how to get it
A Mounjaro pen costs £169.99 per month at the 2.5mg starting dose, £218.99 at 5mg, £279.99 at 7.5mg, £290.99 at 10mg, £319.99 at 12.5mg and £329.99 at 15mg. These are standard prices for one 4-week pen. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40, and every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25). Start with the Mounjaro pen prices and consultation.
Planning beyond one pen helps. If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year of 13 pens costs £2,711.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,599.88 at 15mg. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order £25 less. If you settle at 7.5mg, 10mg or 12.5mg, the monthly price is £279.99, £290.99 or £319.99.
Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens ranged from £143.96 to £339.00 per month as of 10 October 2026, so comparing the same dose between providers is worthwhile.
03 · Ordering
How ordering works
Ordering takes three steps. First, complete a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Second, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your order. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Third, our registered pharmacy dispenses and dispatches, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.
Supply is official LillyDirect stock, sourced directly from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, so you receive genuine KwikPens. All six doses are in stock. You can start your free consultation now, or see all weight loss treatments if you want to compare routes first.

04 · Mechanism: how they suppress appetite
How prescription appetite suppressants work
Prescription appetite suppressants today include GLP-1-based injections, and Mounjaro acts on two targets. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1
In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals. That is useful because it makes a reduced-calorie diet easier to follow. It is not a substitute for that diet.
This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic). It means the medicine has two routes to the same goal, and the published trial averages show what happened across a large group of adults, not what will happen to you.
Wegovy, by comparison, is a once-weekly semaglutide pen with a dose ladder of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg. It steps up after at least 4 weeks and reaches the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.18 Liraglutide (Saxenda, and products such as Erly) is supplied at 6mg per millilitre and is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. For liraglutide's expected results, figures vary and your prescriber can advise.
Why the weekly schedule matters is also practical. A once-weekly pen is one injection to remember in seven days, rather than seven. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1
Dramatic weight-loss claims on supplement packaging are not the same as published trial evidence.
05 · Trial results explained
What the SURMOUNT-1 results show
SURMOUNT-1 was a trial of 2,539 adults. People taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2
These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. A trial average does not predict your own result; some people lose more and some lose less.2
The trial also reported how many people crossed particular thresholds. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2
A worked example makes percentages tangible. For someone starting at 100 kg, 15% is about 15 kg, 19.5% is about 19.5 kg and 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is simple arithmetic on the trial averages, not a forecast for any individual, and it says nothing about how many weeks any particular loss will take.
| Dose | Average weight loss at 72 weeks | Lost at least 5% |
|---|---|---|
| 5mg | 15% | 85% |
| 10mg | 19.5% | 89% |
| 15mg | 20.9% | 91% |
| Lifestyle changes alone | 3.1% | — |
The takeaway is simple: higher doses produced higher average losses in this trial, but dose is decided with your prescriber, and many people stay on a lower dose that suits them.
06 · Dosing and titration
Dose ladders: how you build up
Both main weekly injections are started low and built up. Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1
Each pen covers four weeks of weekly doses, which is why pricing is quoted per month. If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices, before the new-customer discount of £40 on the first order and the £25 reorder discount on every later order. Your prescriber agrees each step with you through ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments.
Wegovy follows its own ladder: 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly, with steps after at least 4 weeks and the 2.4mg maintenance dose reached from week 17. The 2.4mg dose is the licensed maintenance dose for weight management.18
Liraglutide is a different pattern altogether: a daily injection supplied at 6mg per millilitre. For people who prefer fewer injections, a weekly pen is the simpler routine.
You do not need to reach the top dose to benefit. In SURMOUNT-1, 5mg produced an average loss of 15% over 72 weeks.2 For cost planning, that means a first year at 5mg is £2,711.88 at standard prices, whereas a first year at 15mg is up to £3,599.88. For other maintenance doses, use the monthly prices (£279.99, £290.99 and £319.99).
Please follow the dosing your prescriber sets and the instructions in the patient information leaflet. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every order.
Switching from another provider at a higher dose? A new customer gets £40 off their first order at any dose with code FIRST40, and a first 15mg order is £289.99. Your prescriber will still review whether the dose is suitable.
07 · Who is eligible
Who can be prescribed Mounjaro
Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1
A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you. That assessment is the point of the consultation: our orders are reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
A medicine is only the right one if it is safe for you. A prescriber may decide a different treatment, or no medicine at all, is more appropriate. If you use an oral contraceptive pill, Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well it is absorbed. Switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. Raise any other medicines, including diabetes treatment, in the consultation.
Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping. You decide when to reorder, and the prescribing team can review how treatment is going.
If you are not eligible for Mounjaro, other routes may exist. Our page on whether there are prescription appetite suppressants sets out the wider picture, and buying prescription appetite suppressants online explains what a legitimate online route looks like.
Be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. Prescription-only medicines should only be supplied after a clinical assessment. You can check any pharmacy on the GPhC register; ours is GPhC registration 9012878.7
08 · NHS versus private
NHS or private: the honest picture
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46
Full rollout is expected to take years. That is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. The licensed criteria are broader than the first NHS groups, so someone with a BMI of 30 or above may be eligible privately before the NHS reaches them.
The two routes are not rivals. If you may qualify on the NHS, it is worth asking your GP. If you do not yet, or you prefer not to wait, private treatment through a regulated pharmacy is a legitimate option. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.
What does private treatment include here? A free consultation, review by a GPhC-registered prescriber, dispensing by our registered pharmacy, free next-day tracked delivery, and ongoing monthly clinical reviews. You also get the free GLPTrackr companion app for tracking a GLP-1 journey on iOS and Android. Support is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, account portal chat or phone on 0333 207 0413.
Cost differences between private providers are real. Across the UK pharmacies we track, the smallest gap between providers for the same dose was £27 and the largest was £41 as of 10 October 2026. The cheapest 2.5mg starting pen across that group was £143.96 and the dearest £179.99. Boots' Mounjaro dose prices ran from £179.00 to £339.00. Always compare the same dose, and check what the price includes.
Payment options include Visa, Mastercard, Klarna and pay-monthly plans, with no subscriptions. The price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees. Our Mounjaro ordering guide walks through the full process.
09 · Cost over a year
Planning the cost over a year
The cost of a prescription appetite suppressant is not one price but a plan, so it helps to see it in phases. Year totals and monthly prices are standard prices before discounts. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.
| Phase | Pens | Cost at standard prices |
|---|---|---|
| First year if you settle at 5mg | 13 | £2,711.88 |
| First year if you settle at 15mg | 13 | £3,599.88 |
| Ongoing at 7.5mg | 1 per 4 weeks | £279.99 per month |
| Ongoing at 10mg | 1 per 4 weeks | £290.99 per month |
| Ongoing at 12.5mg | 1 per 4 weeks | £319.99 per month |
The weekly equivalent can make budgeting easier: £42.50 per week at 2.5mg, £54.75 at 5mg, £70.00 at 7.5mg, £72.75 at 10mg, £80.00 at 12.5mg and £82.50 at 15mg.
Why has the cost changed? Eli Lilly announced a UK list-price increase for Mounjaro on 14 August 2025, effective 1 September 2025.
Market comparisons should be made with care. The Wegovy first pen is £99.99, a first-order price. For Wegovy tablets, see current Wegovy tablet prices on the product page.
What makes sense to compare is what the price includes. Ours includes the free consultation, prescriber review, free next-day tracked delivery and ongoing monthly reviews. Klarna and pay-monthly options spread the cost, and there is no subscription lock-in. Prices are checked and dated, last on 10 October 2026.
10 · Safety and counterfeits
Safety, counterfeits and side effects
Safety starts with where the medicine comes from. Counterfeit weight-loss pens have been the subject of MHRA alerts, and pens bought from social media, marketplaces or anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription carry real risk.7 Only buy from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, and check that the supplier is a registered pharmacy.
Our Mounjaro comes via official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. These are genuine KwikPens across all six doses (2.5–15mg), delivered in temperature-controlled, discreet packaging.
Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary, and this page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
Like all medicines, Mounjaro can cause side effects, and most are digestive. The most common, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. They are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people ease within days to a few weeks. Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom. You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19
Our aftercare is built around that. Ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, plus side-effect support, mean you are not left to manage treatment alone. Repeat orders re-check suitability, so a change in your health or medicines is picked up.
Tirzepatide takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear after a final dose; there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. Discuss stopping, surgery or pregnancy plans with your prescriber first. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Never pass pens to another person; they were prescribed for you.
11 · Choosing between options
How to choose between prescription options
Choosing comes down to five practical questions. The first is eligibility: are you within the licensed BMI range, and is the medicine suitable given your history? Only a prescriber can decide that after reviewing your questionnaire.
The second is evidence. For Mounjaro, SURMOUNT-1 reports average losses of 15%, 19.5% and 20.9% at 5mg, 10mg and 15mg over 72 weeks, with individual results varying.2 Wegovy is also an effective licensed treatment.
The third is routine. Mounjaro and Wegovy are once-weekly pens, whereas liraglutide is a daily injection supplied at 6mg per millilitre.18 If remembering a daily injection would be hard, weekly dosing may suit you better.
The fourth is the dose ladder. Wegovy has five strengths, reaching 2.4mg from week 17. Ask your prescriber how each step would work for you.
The fifth is cost. A Mounjaro pen is £169.99 per month at 2.5mg and £329.99 at 15mg, standard price, with a first-order discount of £40 and a reorder discount of £25 on every future order. Over a first year, you would spend £2,711.88 at 5mg and up to £3,599.88 at 15mg before discounts.
What should you avoid? Anything described as an instant or dramatic fix, any product sold without assessment, and any plan that suggests stretching, splitting or adding doses. These are not part of licensed use.
When you are ready, the consultation is free and carries no obligation. A prescriber will tell you whether Mounjaro, or something else, is right for you.
12 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
