A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Tirzepatide was tested in adults with obesity and obstructive sleep apnoea in the SURMOUNT-OSA trials, where severity fell substantially on average.
  • Sleep apnoea is named as a weight-related condition in Mounjaro's licensed eligibility, which can widen access at a BMI between 27 and 30.
  • If you use CPAP, continue it and keep your sleep clinic informed; the medicine does not replace your sleep care.
  • NHS access is phased over several years, so many people who meet the licence consider regulated private treatment.
  • Individual results vary, and every order is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber who checks suitability.

01

Does sleep apnoea qualify you for weight loss medication?

Sleep apnoea can help you qualify, but it is never the only test. The licence is built around your BMI, and sleep apnoea matters mainly because it is recognised as a weight-related condition.

In plain terms, if your BMI is 30 or above, you may already be eligible without needing a sleep apnoea diagnosis at all. If your BMI sits between 27 and 30, a confirmed diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea can be the weight-related condition that brings you within the licence.

Your situationWhat it means for eligibility
BMI of 30 or above, with or without sleep apnoeaWithin the licensed criteria for weight management, subject to prescriber review of your history and medicines.
BMI between 27 and 30, with diagnosed obstructive sleep apnoeaSleep apnoea can serve as the weight-related condition the licence asks for.
BMI between 27 and 30, no weight-related conditionOutside the licence at that BMI; a prescriber can discuss other options.
South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgroundClinical thresholds are usually reduced by 2.5 kg/m², so you may qualify at a lower BMI.11

A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.1 Our page on getting Mounjaro with sleep apnoea goes through the practical questions in more detail.

02

What the trial evidence actually says

The evidence is real but specific. In the SURMOUNT-OSA trials, tirzepatide substantially reduced the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea in adults with obesity — on average, breathing interruptions fell by around half or more over a year, and some participants improved enough to no longer need the same level of treatment.16 Those are averages. Trial averages do not predict your own result, and individual results vary.

Two limits are worth stating. First, the trials enrolled adults with obesity, so the findings describe that group. Second, the medicine is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. If you use CPAP, continue it and keep your sleep clinic informed.16 Never stop or reduce a sleep device on your own because you have started a weight loss injection.

Our guide to weight loss drugs and sleep apnoea sets out how the wider group of medicines is discussed.

03

What to do next

Your next step is to check whether you meet the licence and speak to a prescriber. Gather your BMI, your sleep apnoea diagnosis letter if you have one, and a list of everything you take. If you are ready, the Mounjaro pen page has current prices and the free online consultation. A starting pen has a standard price of £169.99 per month, and your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40. Every later order is £25 off the standard price.

If you would rather read more before deciding, our weight loss clinic hub explains how treatment, reviews and follow-up fit together. Your prescriber, not a web page, decides whether the medicine is suitable, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically.

04 · How tirzepatide works

How tirzepatide works and why it matters for sleep apnoea

Tirzepatide works by activating two natural gut-hormone receptors at once. It is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

That mechanism explains why the medicine is classed as a weight management treatment. The route to benefit in obstructive sleep apnoea runs through the trial setting: adults with obesity who took tirzepatide saw substantial reductions in severity on average.16

The medicine is a once-weekly injection, supplied as a pre-filled multi-dose pen called a KwikPen. It comes in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 Treatment starts at the lowest strength and your prescriber steps up through the strengths over time.

It also helps to know what the dual action is compared with. Tirzepatide is distinguished from single-action medicines such as semaglutide, which are sold as Wegovy and Ozempic. If you want to compare the broader field, our page on weight loss drugs and sleep apnoea outcomes sets out what each medicine has been tested for.

Finally, remember the medicine is a support, not a substitute. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 The people in the trials were not simply handed an injection; they were part of a structured programme. Expect your own plan to include the same elements, with your prescriber reviewing progress as you go.

05 · Reading the SURMOUNT-OSA results

Reading the SURMOUNT-OSA results honestly

The SURMOUNT-OSA results are strongly positive, but they are averages from a trial population. In the SURMOUNT-OSA trials, tirzepatide substantially reduced the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea in adults with obesity — on average, breathing interruptions fell by around half or more over a year, and some participants improved enough to no longer need the same level of treatment.16

The headline measure in sleep apnoea research is how many times breathing is interrupted during sleep. The trial reported that this fell, on average, by around half or more. That is a large effect, and it is why clinicians have taken notice. But an average hides a spread: some people improved a great deal, some less, and individual results vary.

The phrase about participants who no longer needed the same level of treatment deserves care. It means some people improved enough that their treatment needs changed. It does not mean sleep apnoea was cured, and it does not mean you should change your own equipment. Any change to CPAP or other sleep treatment is a decision for your sleep clinic after reassessment. If you use CPAP, continue it and keep your sleep clinic informed.16

Weight management with this medicine is ongoing, and your prescriber reviews it regularly. If you stop, the medicine takes roughly four to five weeks to clear your system, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

You should also be wary of comparisons across trials. A result from a sleep apnoea trial cannot be set beside a result from a general obesity trial or a different medicine's trial as if they were head to head. They enrolled different people and measured different things. If you read a claim that one injection beats another for sleep apnoea, ask which trial compared them directly.

Finally, think about what you want from treatment. For many people the goals are better sleep, less daytime tiredness and a healthier weight. The trials speak most clearly to the severity of breathing interruptions. If you want to see how other pages frame the question, our guide to weight loss injections for sleep apnoea is a good companion read. Treat all of this as information to discuss with your prescriber and sleep clinic, not as a promise of a specific outcome.

06 · CPAP and your sleep clinic

CPAP, sleep clinics and weight loss medication

Keep using CPAP and keep your sleep clinic in the loop. If you use CPAP, continue it and keep your sleep clinic informed.16 A weight loss medicine is an addition to your care, not a replacement for a device that is currently protecting your breathing at night.

Why does this deserve its own section? Because people sometimes read a headline about reduced severity and conclude they can put the mask away. Please do not. Whether your treatment needs change is a clinical judgement that depends on a formal reassessment of your sleep, usually through the clinic that diagnosed you. Some trial participants improved enough to no longer need the same level of treatment, but that was assessed in a trial setting.

Here is a practical way to handle it. Tell your sleep clinic that you are considering or starting a weight loss medicine. Ask how and when they would like to review you, and whether any change in your weight would prompt a reassessment. Tell your prescriber about your sleep apnoea diagnosis and any equipment you use. Both teams then have the full picture.

If you do not have a diagnosis, think about whether you should. Loud snoring, pauses in breathing noticed by a partner, and heavy daytime sleepiness are reasons to speak to your GP. A diagnosis also matters for eligibility at a BMI between 27 and 30, where sleep apnoea can be the weight-related condition the licence requires.1

Finally, new symptoms deserve attention. If anything changes in your breathing, sleep or general health once you start treatment, tell your prescriber. You can also report suspected side effects to the MHRA through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Our related page asking whether Mounjaro is prescribed for sleep apnoea covers how prescribers think about this, and your own sleep specialist remains the best guide for equipment questions.

07 · NHS and private routes

NHS access versus private treatment

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.4 The honest answer is that it depends on where you fall in the phased rollout, and your GP or local service can tell you.

NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

Notice the difference between the NHS criteria and the licence. The NHS criteria start at a higher BMI and prioritise people in order of need. The licence, which governs private prescribing, starts at a BMI of 30 or above, or between 27 and 30 with a weight-related condition. So you may meet the licence but not yet be reached by the NHS rollout. Sleep apnoea counts as a weight-related condition in the eligibility criteria, which can matter in both settings.

How should you decide? Start by speaking to your GP. Ask whether you are likely to be offered NHS treatment, and roughly when. If you are, that may suit you. If you are not, or if the wait does not suit your circumstances, regulated private treatment is a legitimate route. The key word is regulated: choose a pharmacy on the GPhC register, where a prescriber reviews your suitability. Our registration number is GPhC 9012878, and you can check any pharmacy on the public register.12

There is no need to treat this as either-or forever. Some people begin privately and later move to NHS care when their turn comes, taking their records with them. Tell your GP what you are taking so your records stay accurate and so that your sleep clinic and GP are working from the same information.

Costs deserve an honest look as well. Private treatment involves paying for the medicine, and prices differ between providers. Our live prices appear on the product page, and a new customer's first order has a discount applied with code FIRST40, while every later order is £25 off the standard price. Our guide to gut-hormone medicines for sleep apnoea compares the wider options.

08 · Who should not take it

Who should not take Mounjaro

Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone, and having sleep apnoea does not change that. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.113 Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation. This is why the consultation is a genuine clinical review rather than a formality. People with sleep apnoea often have other conditions, such as high blood pressure or prediabetes, and your prescriber will weigh all of them together.

Thyroid safety is a standard part of the assessment. In rodent studies tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumours; it is not known whether this applies to humans, and no increase has been shown in human trials. As a precaution, tell your prescriber if you or a close relative have had medullary thyroid cancer or the inherited condition MEN 2 — they will weigh this in your assessment. Routine thyroid monitoring is not required for most people.1

There is also the matter of contraception. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Ask your prescriber what that means for the method you use.

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you notice anything new or concerning, tell your prescriber. You can also report it yourself via the Yellow Card scheme.19

Regulators have looked specifically at whether GLP-1 medicines are linked to low mood or suicidal thoughts: the EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence and concluded in 2024 that it does not support a causal link, and the MHRA keeps this under continuous review. That said, any big change in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel — tell your prescriber about any history of depression, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment.17

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.

09 · Other medicines you take

Other medicines, including diabetes and sleep treatments

Tell your prescriber about everything you take, because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying and that can change how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed. Because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, it can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly when you start treatment or increase the dose.113

Tell your prescriber especially about warfarin or other narrow-margin medicines, insulin, or sulfonylureas, where doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar. This does not mean these medicines cannot be used alongside Mounjaro; your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines. No adjustment is needed for paracetamol.

People with sleep apnoea are often managing several conditions. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes are all common companions, and each may come with its own tablets or injections. Make a written list before your consultation: names, strengths, how often you take them, and anything you buy over the counter. Include supplements. A complete list lets the prescriber spot a problem before it happens.

The moments of greatest change are the start of treatment and each dose increase. Absorption effects are most likely then, so those are the times to stay alert and to check in with your prescriber if something feels different. If you use insulin or a sulfonylurea, ask in advance what to watch for and who to call.

What about sleep treatments? CPAP is a device, not a medicine, so it does not interact in this sense. Still, keep your sleep clinic informed of any change in your weight or your treatment. If you also take prescribed sleeping tablets or other medicines that affect alertness, mention them at your consultation.

Finally, repeat orders matter. We re-check suitability each time you reorder, with no auto-shipping, so changes in your medicines or health come to light. Our diabetes-focused article, diabetes medication and weight loss, goes deeper into how treatment fits with other diabetes drugs. If you start any new medicine after your consultation, tell your prescriber before your next order.

10 · Starting treatment with us

Starting treatment: ordering, delivery and storage

Ordering starts with a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Your answers are reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. The price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees.

Once approved, your medicine is dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm. Delivery is free, next-day and tracked through DPD, in temperature-controlled, discreet packaging. Saturday delivery costs £14.99. All six strengths, from 2.5mg to 15mg, are in stock, and we supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order.

On cost, a first-year picture helps you plan. If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,599.88 at 15mg. For other maintenance doses, the monthly standard prices are £279.99 at 7.5mg, £290.99 at 10mg and £319.99 at 12.5mg. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less. Payment is by Visa, Mastercard or Klarna, with pay-monthly options and no subscriptions.

Storage is straightforward. Keep unopened pens in the fridge at 2–8°C until first use, and they keep until the printed expiry date. For anything beyond that, check the patient information leaflet.13 Once you start a pen, it can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or has been frozen.1 Follow the pen's own instructions when you inject.

Aftercare is part of the service. Ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and follow-up assessments are carried out by the prescribing team, with support for side effects. Repeat orders re-check suitability. Our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through your account portal chat, or by phone on 0333 207 0413. The free GLPTrackr companion app, on iOS and Android, helps you track your journey.

If you are ready to begin, the Mounjaro pen page shows today's prices and starts your consultation.

11 · Safe buying and what to avoid

Buying safely and avoiding unregulated sellers

Buy only from a pharmacy that is registered and that requires a prescriber review. The MHRA issues counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting suspected problems.719 A weight loss injection is a prescription-only medicine, so anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is a red flag.

Treat any seller who promises specific results with suspicion. Trial averages do not predict your own result, and no reputable provider can tell you what yours will be.

Here is a short checklist. First, look the pharmacy up on the GPhC register; ours is GPhC 9012878, and you can verify it directly.12 Second, expect a health questionnaire reviewed by a prescriber before anything is dispensed. Third, expect the medicine to arrive in genuine, branded packaging, with injection guidance. Fourth, be wary of prices that seem too good to be true, since low prices on a prescription medicine are a common sign of counterfeit supply.

Be equally careful with over-the-counter products that borrow the language of prescription medicines. Low-cost supplements marketed as natural alternatives have no clinical oversight and are not the same as the licensed medicine. Their dosing is not standardised, and they have no trial evidence comparable to the SURMOUNT-OSA trials.

If something goes wrong, act. Tell your prescriber or GP about any new or lasting symptom, and report suspected side effects or suspect products through Yellow Card. For severe, persistent stomach pain, chest pain, swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing, get medical help straight away. If you have received a product that looks wrong, damaged or different, contact the supplier at once; our policy is that faulty, damaged or wrong items should be reported within three days of receipt.

Treat your sleep care the same way. Use a clinic you can verify, keep records of your treatment and appointments, and make sure both your prescriber and your sleep clinic know what you are taking. Our consultation is free and carries no obligation, so there is no risk in asking a prescriber to review whether treatment is right for you. If the prescriber decides treatment is not suitable, your order is refunded automatically in full.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What weight loss drug helps with sleep apnea?
Tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro, has trial evidence in obstructive sleep apnoea. In the SURMOUNT-OSA trials, it substantially reduced severity in adults with obesity, with breathing interruptions falling by around half or more over a year on average. Results are averages and individual results vary.
How can I lose weight if I have sleep apnea?
Weight management usually combines a reduced-calorie diet, increased physical activity and, where you qualify, a licensed medicine. Mounjaro is used alongside diet and activity rather than instead of them, and a prescriber reviews your BMI, history and medicines first. Keep using CPAP if you have it and keep your sleep clinic informed. Your GP can also refer you to NHS weight management support, so it is worth asking what is available locally.
Does sleep apnea qualify for Ozempic?
No. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. The licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg).
Can Mounjaro cure sleep apnea?
In the SURMOUNT-OSA trials, tirzepatide substantially reduced severity in adults with obesity, and some participants improved enough to no longer need the same level of treatment. That is an average trial finding and individual results vary. If you use CPAP, continue it and keep your sleep clinic informed, because any change to your sleep treatment is a clinical decision made after reassessment.
What is the Japanese trick for sleep apnea?
Tricks, exercises and devices vary in quality and none replaces a proper diagnosis. Speak to your GP or sleep clinic about options suited to your type and severity of sleep apnoea, and keep using any prescribed treatment such as CPAP in the meantime.
Is Mounjaro covered for sleep apnea?
Mounjaro is licensed for weight management, not specifically as a sleep apnoea treatment, but sleep apnoea counts as a weight-related condition in the eligibility criteria. At a BMI between 27 and 30, a diagnosis can bring you within the licence. Whether a prescription is funded depends on the route: the NHS is phasing in access over several years, while private treatment is paid for by you. Our page on whether Mounjaro is prescribed for sleep apnoea explains more.
Can I get Mounjaro on the NHS if I have sleep apnea?
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and sleep apnoea is a weight-related condition in the eligibility criteria. The rollout began with the highest-need groups first, so ask your GP where you fall. Many people who meet the licence choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
What is the pillow trick against sleep apnea?
Pillow and positioning tricks are matters for your sleep clinic, who can judge them for the type and severity of your sleep apnoea. Whether a position or accessory could help depends on the type and severity of your sleep apnoea, which only your sleep clinic can judge. Do not use any trick in place of prescribed treatment such as CPAP, and tell your clinic if symptoms change.
What are the long-term effects of Mounjaro?
Weight management with Mounjaro is ongoing, with regular reviews, and side effects are listed in the patient information leaflet. Serious side effects are uncommon: for severe, persistent stomach pain, pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, or swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing, get medical help straight away. If you stop, the medicine takes roughly four to five weeks to clear your system. Tell your prescriber about any new symptom, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme. Our monthly reviews include side-effect support.
