Non Prescription Diet Pills and Appetite Suppressants: What Actually Works in the UK (October 2026)
No non-prescription diet pill or supplement is a licensed equivalent of a prescription GLP-1 treatment, and none has comparable trial evidence to Mounjaro's SURMOUNT-1 result of 20.9% average weight loss at 15mg over 72 weeks (individual results vary).2 Orlistat blocks some fat absorption rather than suppressing appetite. Supplements are not regulated for this use. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Over-the-counter diet pills and "natural" appetite suppressants are not medicines with comparable trial evidence.
-
Orlistat is the licensed tablet option, but it blocks some dietary fat absorption instead of reducing appetite.
-
There is no tablet form of Mounjaro, but two licensed GLP-1 weight-loss tablets now exist, both prescription-only.
-
Anything promising prescription-strength results without a consultation or prescription is a warning sign.
-
Mounjaro is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber; your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99).
In this guide
01 · The short answer
Do non-prescription appetite suppressants work?
The honest answer is that over-the-counter products are a very different category from prescription weight-loss treatment. They are mostly supplements or fibre products, sold without a consultation, and none has the large, published, licensed-medicine trial record that Mounjaro or Wegovy has.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injection licensed in the UK for weight management in adults. It activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties.1 Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.
02 · Side by side
Non-prescription products compared with licensed treatment
| Option | What it is | How it works | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fibre supplements (glucomannan, psyllium) | Supplement, no consultation | Bulk in the stomach; not an appetite medicine | Ask a pharmacist |
| Protein powders | Food product | Supports fullness within a calorie-controlled diet | Not a treatment |
| Berberine and "natural GLP-1" products | Supplement, not a medicine | Not regulated for this use | No comparable trial evidence20 |
| Orlistat (sold as alli) | Licensed tablet | Blocks some dietary fat absorption | Smaller average losses than GLP-1 injections |
| Mounjaro | Prescription injection, weekly | Dual GIP and GLP-1 action | 20.9% average loss at 15mg over 72 weeks (SURMOUNT-1); results vary2 |
Supplements are low-cost products with no clinical oversight; cheapness is a reason for caution, not a selling point.
03 · If you want a proper treatment
What prescription treatment costs
If you meet the licensed criteria, the Mounjaro pen is the alternative to guesswork with supplements. The standard price of a 2.5mg starter pen is £169.99 per month, and your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40. Every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25). All six doses are in stock. Prices checked 11 October 2026.
Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month depending on dose and provider (checked 11 October 2026). The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
04 · Why OTC pills disappoint
Why over-the-counter appetite suppressants fall short
The phrase "appetite suppressant" implies a medicine that acts on the hunger signals between your gut and brain. The products on UK shelves mostly do not do that. Fibre products add bulk. Protein products give you a food that fills you up. Neither changes the hormone signalling that GLP-1 treatments target.
When judging non-prescription appetite suppressants, including appetite suppressant diet pills, focus on what to check on a label rather than on promised results. Look for a clear ingredient list, a regulated product type and a seller that does not promise dramatic weight-loss claims. If a product claims to match a prescription medicine, treat that as a red flag.
05 · Orlistat explained
Orlistat: the licensed tablet that is not an appetite suppressant
Orlistat is a tablet that blocks some dietary fat absorption and produces smaller average losses than the GLP-1 injections. It does not reduce appetite. That distinction matters if your real problem is constant hunger, because a fat blocker will not change how hungry you feel.
Your pharmacist or prescriber can explain the figures and whether it suits you.
06 · Poor man's Ozempic
"Natural Ozempic" and the "poor man's Ozempic"
Supplements marketed as natural GLP-1 boosters, including berberine, are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence.20 They are not equivalents of prescribed treatment and are not substitutes for it. Dosing is not standardised.
It also helps to know that Ozempic itself is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes. It is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. The licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg), so a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss.1
There is no shortcut that copies a GLP-1 medicine. If you see a product claiming to mimic one, our page on diet pills and GLP-1 explains the difference.
07 · Is there a GLP-1 tablet?
Is there a weight-loss pill that works like Mounjaro?
There is no tablet form of Mounjaro; tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK.1 However, two GLP-1 weight-loss tablets are now licensed. Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide, from Novo Nordisk) were approved by the MHRA in June 2026, and Foundayo (orforglipron, from Eli Lilly) was approved in August 2026.2021
These are different medicines from Mounjaro, with their own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results, and both are prescription-only. They are not available over the counter. For current Wegovy tablet prices, see all weight loss treatments. Our guide to GLP-1 pills without a prescription covers why buying them without one is unsafe.
08 · Evidence for licensed options
What the licensed treatments achieved in trials
In SURMOUNT-1, 2,539 adults on tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages; individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased activity.
For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. Trial averages do not predict your own result.
In the head-to-head SURMOUNT-5 trial, adults on tirzepatide lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy).15 In STEP 1, adults on semaglutide 2.4mg lost on average 14.9% over 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo.9 Both are effective, licensed treatments, and which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice.
09 · Eligibility and NHS
Who can have prescription treatment, and the NHS route
Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines first.1
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.46 Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. If you are asking whether it can be bought without a prescription, see Mounjaro without a prescription.
10 · Stacking and safety
Mixing diet pills with Mounjaro
Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed research peptides (such as retatrutide, which has no UK licence) or compounded copies. These combinations have no safety data and no regulated supply chain.
No supplement is required with Mounjaro, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net. Discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist. Oral supplements may also be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment. Our page on taking diet pills with Mounjaro goes through this in more detail.
Report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.7
11 · Spotting unsafe sellers
Spotting unsafe sellers
Counterfeit and unregulated weight-loss products circulate online, so check who is supplying you. A legitimate UK pharmacy appears on the GPhC register; ours is GPhC 9012878. Be wary of anyone offering to supply a prescription medicine without a consultation or prescription, or promising specific results.7
We supply Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens. Orders are reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically.
