A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Two GLP-1 tablets are licensed for weight management in the UK: Wegovy tablets and Foundayo. Both need a prescription.
  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is injection-only in the UK; there is no Mounjaro tablet.
  • Supplements marketed as "natural GLP-1" are not medicines and have no comparable trial evidence.
  • No trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet, so average results should not be set against each other.
  • A GPhC-registered prescriber decides which option suits your health, medicines and routine.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Are there GLP-1 diet pills in the UK?

Yes, but only a small and specific group. Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are GLP-1 medicines in tablet form, licensed for weight management in adults and supplied on prescription. Everything else sold as a "GLP-1 diet pill" over the counter or online without a prescription is not the same thing.2021

There is no tablet form of Mounjaro. Tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK, so any seller offering "Mounjaro tablets" is not offering the licensed medicine.1

02 · What to do next

Which route is relevant to you?

It depends on your starting point, your routine and what your prescriber judges suitable. The tablets suit people who would rather avoid injections. The weekly injection suits people who prefer a single dose each week with no daily routine.

Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.2021 A prescriber will check which option is suitable for your health, your other medicines and your routine.20

If the weekly injection sounds right, the Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 at the 2.5mg starting dose. A new customer's first order is £40 off with code FIRST40, and every later order is £25 off. You can also see our wider weight loss clinic range, and the free consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

03 · Wegovy tablets

Wegovy tablets: the oral semaglutide option

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, taken as one tablet once a day. They are made by Novo Nordisk and are prescription-only.20 You can see our current Wegovy pill listing for availability and pricing.

The routine is the main thing to understand. The tablet must be taken on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, swallowed whole with a sip of water (up to half a glass, about 120ml), and you then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other tablets.20 That suits some people well and is awkward for others.

Treatment starts at 1.5mg once daily and steps up to 4mg, 9mg and then the 25mg maintenance dose, with at least one month at each dose; the dose can stay at an earlier step if needed.20 If a dose is missed, skip it and take the next tablet the following day.20

For results, the OASIS 4 trial is the relevant evidence. In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo.22 Individual results vary.

The most common side effects are digestive: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and stomach pain, along with headache and tiredness. Gallstones and hair loss are listed as common.22

People already on the weekly Wegovy injection can move to the tablet. People on the 2.4mg weekly Wegovy injection can move to the 25mg tablet, starting one week after their last injection.20 That change should be made with a prescriber, not on your own.

04 · Foundayo

Foundayo (orforglipron): the Lilly tablet

Foundayo contains orforglipron, a once-daily GLP-1 tablet made by Eli Lilly, the maker of Mounjaro.21 It is a different medicine from Mounjaro, with its own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results. See the Foundayo product page for current details.

Its practical appeal is simplicity. Unlike Wegovy tablets it can be taken at any time of day, with or without food and without water restrictions; the tablet is swallowed whole.21

Dosing is stepped. Treatment starts at 0.8mg once daily, then steps up to 2.5mg and 5.5mg, and then to 9mg, 14.5mg or 17.2mg depending on response and tolerability, with at least 30 days at each dose; 17.2mg once daily is the maximum.21 If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible, but never more than one tablet a day.21

Contraception matters with this tablet. Foundayo may make oral contraceptive pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase.21

On results, the ATTAIN-1 trial reported that people taking the highest dose of orforglipron for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4% of their body weight, compared with 0.9% on placebo; the two lower doses gave 7.8% and 9.3%.23 The trial used capsules, and the UK 17.2mg tablet corresponds to the highest trial dose, so the tablet and capsule doses are not comparable milligram for milligram.23

The most common side effects are digestive: nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting, indigestion and stomach pain.23 In the trial, 10.3% of people on the highest dose stopped because of side effects, compared with 2.7% on placebo.23

05 · Safety of GLP-1 pills

Are weight loss GLP-1 pills safe?

Licensed GLP-1 tablets are prescription medicines that have been through UK regulatory approval, and they carry known side effects that are listed in their product information. That is a very different safety position from unregulated pills sold online.2021

For both tablets the common problems are digestive. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and stomach pain lead the list in the trial data.2223 Most people notice these around the start of treatment and after dose increases, which is one reason doses step up gradually.

Who should not take GLP-1 pills? Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.

Never run two GLP-1 medicines together. Combining a tablet with an injection, or with unlicensed "research" peptides, has no safety data behind it.1 If you notice a new symptom on treatment, tell your prescriber, and you can report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

06 · Supplements and alternatives

Is there a supplement that works like GLP-1?

No supplement has been shown to work like a GLP-1 medicine. "Natural GLP-1" products, such as berberine, are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence.

Their marketing often borrows the language of prescription treatments, including phrases like "nature's Ozempic". That is a sales line, not a clinical comparison. Such products are available cheaply without assessment, which is part of the risk: nobody checks whether they suit you or interact with your medicines. Their dosing is not standardised, and we do not suggest any amount. Dramatic weight-loss claims on supplement packaging should be treated with suspicion.

Orlistat is a different category again. It is a tablet that blocks some dietary fat absorption and produces smaller average losses than the GLP-1 medicines. It is a licensed medicine, but it is not a GLP-1 drug and does not act on appetite in the same way. For a deeper comparison of the whole category, see our blog on how diet pills work and what to check, or our page on appetite suppressant diet pills.

Other licensed options are injections: Wegovy and Saxenda (liraglutide), alongside Mounjaro. Liraglutide is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy.1

If you already use Mounjaro and wonder about adding something on top, read whether you can take diet pills with Mounjaro. In short, speak to your prescriber before combining anything, and never stack another GLP-1 product.

07 · Is GLP-1 a hormone?

Is GLP-1 a hormone, and what are GLP-1 medicines used for?

Yes, GLP-1 is a natural gut hormone, and GLP-1 medicines are designed to act on the same receptor. Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 gut-hormone receptors together, which helps regulate appetite, slows how quickly the stomach empties, and improves the way the body responds to insulin.1

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. The medicine does not replace the diet; it makes sticking to one more manageable.

Uses differ by product. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes. It is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. The licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg), plus Wegovy tablets and Foundayo.118

The question of whether a GLP-1 diet works is answered separately.

08 · Best pill for weight loss

Which tablet is right for weight loss?

There is no honest single answer, and nothing licensed in the UK is a quick fix. The right option is the one a prescriber judges suitable and that you can stay on, because these medicines work while you keep taking them alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity.

The trial figures for each product are real, but they come from different studies. In OASIS 4, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo.22 In ATTAIN-1, people on the highest dose of orforglipron for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4%, compared with 0.9% on placebo.23 These trials had different people, durations and doses, so they should not be set against each other.

No trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet. SURMOUNT-5 is the trial that compared tirzepatide directly with injected semaglutide.15 In that trial, adults on tirzepatide lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy).15 Both are effective, licensed treatments; which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice, not the headline number alone.

The practical differences matter as much as the averages. Wegovy tablets need a strict empty-stomach routine every morning, Foundayo has no food or water rules, and Mounjaro needs one injection a week.2021

Anything that promises faster results outside a licensed pathway is the warning sign. That includes unlicensed "research" peptides such as retatrutide, which has no UK licence, and compounded copies. These have no safety data and no regulated supply chain.1

09 · Where to get them

Where can I buy GLP-1 pills, and can I get them over the counter?

You cannot buy GLP-1 medicines over the counter in the UK. They are prescription-only, supplied after a consultation reviewed by a prescriber. A pharmacy or website offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is a red flag, and the products may be counterfeit.7

Check that any online pharmacy is registered. EverydayMeds is a GPhC-registered UK online pharmacy, registration 9012878, and you can verify that on the public register.12

For tablets, check current availability on the Wegovy pill and Foundayo pages. For the weekly injection, the route is simple and the same for each dose:

  • Complete the free online consultation: a short health questionnaire, no charge and no obligation.
  • A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
  • Our registered pharmacy dispenses it, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm, and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging.

Mounjaro is supplied through official LillyDirect supply, with genuine KwikPens from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, and all six doses are in stock. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order, and monthly clinical reviews are included.

Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month depending on dose and provider (checked 10 October 2026). Our own figures are shown live on the Mounjaro product page.

10 · NHS and private routes

NHS access versus private treatment

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.

Private does not have to mean unregulated. A regulated pharmacy supplies the same licensed medicines through a prescriber. An unregulated seller of "GLP-1 diet pills" does not.

11 · Alongside treatment

What matters alongside any GLP-1 medicine

Every licensed GLP-1 weight-loss medicine is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A pill does not remove that part of the plan.

No food is banned on Mounjaro, but some choices make treatment easier and more effective. Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and smaller, slower meals work better.

Muscle matters too. Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, so include a protein source at every meal and add resistance exercise regularly, with moderate activity such as brisk walking. This matters more, not less, as appetite falls.

Keep water within reach through the day. Reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly. Treat inability to keep fluids down as a contact-your-clinical-team issue, not something to push through. Coffee and tea are fine, though strong coffee on an empty stomach can aggravate nausea for some people.

12 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Are weight loss GLP-1 pills safe?
Licensed GLP-1 tablets, Wegovy tablets and Foundayo, are prescription medicines with known side effects, mainly digestive such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation. They should only be taken after a prescriber has checked they suit you. Pills sold as "GLP-1" without a prescription carry no such assurance and should be avoided.
Which tablet is right for losing weight?
No licensed medicine is best for everyone. The two licensed GLP-1 tablets, Wegovy tablets and Foundayo, have separate trial results from different studies, so they should not be ranked against each other. The right choice depends on your health, other medicines and routine, and a prescriber decides which is suitable for you.
Is GLP-1 a hormone?
Yes. GLP-1 is a natural gut hormone that helps regulate appetite, slows how quickly the stomach empties and supports the body's response to insulin. GLP-1 medicines act on the same receptor. Mounjaro goes further by activating both GIP and GLP-1 receptors together.
What are GLP-1 medications used for?
In the UK, GLP-1 based medicines are used for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, depending on the product. Mounjaro is licensed for both. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes only, and the licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro, Wegovy, Saxenda and the two GLP-1 tablets.
Tablets are checked by a prescriber in the same way. Foundayo may make oral contraceptive pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase. Never combine GLP-1 products, and read the leaflet that comes with your medicine.
Where can I buy GLP-1 pills?
Only from a registered pharmacy, after a consultation reviewed by a prescriber. You can check registration on the GPhC public register; ours is 9012878. Be wary of any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.
Can I get GLP-1 pills over the counter?
No. GLP-1 medicines are prescription-only in the UK. Products sold over the counter or online as "natural GLP-1", such as berberine, are supplements rather than medicines. They are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence, so they should not be treated as equivalents.
Is there a supplement that works like GLP-1?
No supplement has comparable trial evidence to licensed GLP-1 medicines. Berberine and similar products are not medicines and are not regulated for weight loss. They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised. If you want a GLP-1 medicine, a prescriber can assess you.
