A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
There is no exact hour when appetite suppression starts. Most people notice a change within the first few weeks, and some notice it sooner.
-
Mounjaro acts on two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, so most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.
-
A quiet start on the lowest strength is common and is not a reliable sign that treatment will fail. Your prescriber reviews progress as the dose changes.
-
Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

01 · The core answer
When does Mounjaro start curbing appetite?
Mounjaro usually starts to curb appetite within the first few weeks of treatment, and some people notice a change after the first injection or two. What the medicine does is well described: tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1
Because the medicine is injected once a week and stays in the body for days, the effect is not a switch. It builds and settles over the early weeks, and for most people it is clearest once a steady routine of weekly doses is in place.
| Stage | What many people notice | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The first day or two after the first injection | Often little. Some people feel slightly fuller at meals or snack less. Others notice nothing yet. | Take the dose as directed and eat normally in sensible portions. Do not judge the medicine yet. |
| The first couple of weeks | Appetite changes become more noticeable for many people. They may feel full sooner and think about food less between meals. | Notice your pattern across the week and keep a simple note of hunger and fullness. The GLPTrackr app can help. |
| The first few weeks | The effect is usually more consistent, though it can still vary from day to day. | Keep taking your weekly dose on the same day. Tell your prescriber at your review how you are getting on. |
| As the dose is stepped up | Each increase may bring a further change in appetite for some people. Others find the effect stays similar. | Follow your prescriber's plan. Dose increases are their decision, not something to bring forward yourself. |
| Later maintenance | Appetite is often steadier. The aim is to support eating less without feeling constantly deprived. | Continue with a reduced-calorie diet and regular activity, and keep your reviews. |
These stages are a guide to what is common, not a promise. Response differs between people, and your own experience may come earlier or later.
02 · Is this relevant to you?
Feeling nothing yet: should you worry?
Feeling little or nothing in the first days is common enough that it should not alarm you, and it is not a reliable sign the medicine will not work for you. The starting strength, 2.5mg, is the lowest of the six available strengths (2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg).1 Your prescriber raises the dose gradually, typically after at least four weeks, depending on how you are doing.
What matters is the pattern over several weeks, not a single day. If after a reasonable period you notice no change at all, speak to your prescriber rather than changing anything yourself. They can review your dose, your routine and your symptoms. Our guide to how soon suppression begins covers the same question from a general angle.

03 · How it works
How Mounjaro reduces appetite
Mounjaro reduces appetite by acting on two natural gut-hormone receptors at once. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1
In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 That wording matters. The medicine does not remove food from your life or force you to stop eating. It changes how strong the pull of hunger feels, and how quickly you feel satisfied once you start a meal.
This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).1 It does not mean you will feel the effect on any particular day, only that the mechanism is different.
Slower stomach emptying is one reason people describe feeling full for longer. It is also why some people notice a change in how they feel after larger or richer meals. Both effects come from the same action on the gut and are part of the medicine's design.
04 · Why timing differs
Why appetite suppression starts at different times
Appetite suppression starts at different times because people differ in how they respond, and because the dose changes over the early weeks.
Several things plausibly shape what you notice.
- Your dose. You begin at the lowest strength and move up. A change in strength is a natural point at which your appetite may shift.
- Your baseline hunger. Someone who rarely snacks may find the effect harder to spot than someone who grazes all day.
- Your routine. Sleep, stress, busy days and eating habits all colour how hungry you feel, which can mask or exaggerate a medicine effect.
- Your expectations. If you expect a dramatic shift, a subtle one is easy to miss. Look for smaller signs, such as leaving food on the plate or forgetting a snack.
None of this replaces advice from your own prescriber. For any question about how the pen is used, follow the pen's instructions and the patient information leaflet.13
05 · Still hungry
Why am I still hungry on Mounjaro?
You may still feel hungry on Mounjaro because the effect is gradual, varies by person, and often depends on dose. Feeling hungry in the first days is normal enough that it is not, by itself, a reason to worry.
Things worth checking before you decide it is not working:
- Time. Have you had enough weekly doses for the effect to build? The early weeks are a settling-in period.
- Your dose. You may still be on the lowest strength. Your prescriber decides when and whether to move up.
- Your injection routine. Are you taking the dose on the same day each week, as directed? Follow the pen's instructions and the leaflet.13
- What you are eating. Highly palatable, easy-to-eat foods can still be tempting even when physical hunger is reduced. The medicine works alongside a reduced-calorie diet, not instead of it.
- Habit hunger. Evening snacking or eating when bored is partly a habit. Medicine can soften hunger, but cues like TV or boredom may remain.
Reducing hunger is not the same as removing cravings, and most people still enjoy food on treatment. If you are concerned, contact the prescribing team. If you notice a new symptom you are unsure about, tell your prescriber and consider reporting it through the Yellow Card scheme.19
06 · Too little appetite
What if I have almost no appetite?
If you have almost no appetite, do not ignore it, and talk to your prescriber. Reduced hunger is the intended effect of treatment, but eating far too little is not the goal. The medicine is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not as a reason to skip meals.
Should you force yourself to eat? We would not advise forcing large meals, and we would not advise going without food either. A sensible middle ground is to keep to regular, modest meals and snacks that include protein and fibre-rich foods, even when you are not particularly hungry. For personal advice, speak to your prescriber or a dietitian, because the right amount depends on your size, health conditions and other medicines.
If you feel unwell, struggle to eat or drink at all, or cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away. Our ongoing monthly reviews exist for this kind of conversation, and you do not need to wait for a review to get in touch.
Also tell your prescriber about other medicines you take. For example, insulin or sulfonylureas may need dose adjustments because of the risk of low blood sugar, and your prescriber is the person to manage that.
07 · Eating too much
What happens if you eat too much on Mounjaro?
If you eat too much on Mounjaro, you may simply feel uncomfortably full, because the medicine slows how quickly the stomach empties. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.
Practical habits that many people find helpful, offered as general lifestyle advice rather than clinical instruction:
- Eat slowly and stop when you feel satisfied, not stuffed.
- Choose smaller portions and let your appetite guide when you stop.
- Notice how richer or larger meals sit, and adjust.
- Keep a note of foods that leave you feeling unwell and discuss them with your prescriber.
What foods should you avoid? No food is banned on Mounjaro, but many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly. In general, the aim is a reduced-calorie diet that you can sustain, with increased physical activity.
08 · Weight loss timing
How long until I lose weight?
Appetite changes usually come before visible weight change, and the large trial results were measured over many months rather than weeks.
What the evidence does say: In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2
Trial averages do not predict your own result. A modest start is normal, and the early weeks are about establishing the routine and finding your dose. Our weight loss clinic page explains how the wider programme fits together.
09 · Other approaches
Other appetite-suppression approaches
Mounjaro is a prescription treatment, and it is a different thing from non-prescription tactics. Prescription appetite suppression explains how licensed medicines differ.
You may also see interest in methods such as acupuncture and acupressure points.
Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 If you are exploring options, a prescriber can explain which is appropriate for you.
10 · Access and safety
Getting Mounjaro safely and when to get help
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
On the NHS: Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.4 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Same-day dispatch applies when you order by 3pm. We supply Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, so you receive genuine KwikPens. Be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. Counterfeit medicines are a real risk, and the MHRA publishes alerts.7
Contact your prescriber if you have new or worrying symptoms. You can also report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19
11 · Stopping and clearance
What happens to appetite if you stop?
If you stop Mounjaro, the appetite effect does not vanish at once, because the medicine leaves the body slowly. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system — there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average.14 Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.
For anything about stopping, pausing or changing dose, talk to your prescriber first, rather than adjusting treatment yourself.
