Mounjaro vs Natural Weight Loss: What the Evidence Shows (October 2026)

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, adults on Mounjaro lost on average 20.9% of body weight on 15mg versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone over 72 weeks; individual results vary.2 Mounjaro works alongside diet and exercise, not instead of them. "Natural" supplements have no comparable trial evidence. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • In SURMOUNT-1, tirzepatide plus lifestyle changes averaged 15% to 20.9% loss over 72 weeks, versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.
  • Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity, so the real choice is lifestyle alone or lifestyle with medicine.
  • "Natural GLP-1" supplements such as berberine are not medicines and have no comparable trial evidence.
  • Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is phased, so many people consider regulated private treatment.
  • Never combine Mounjaro with other GLP-1 products, research peptides or compounded copies.
In this guide

01 · The verdict

Which suits you: Mounjaro or natural weight loss?

Lifestyle change suits people who want to start now, have a modest amount to lose or prefer no medication. Mounjaro suits adults who meet the licensed criteria and have found diet and exercise alone are not enough.

Note that Mounjaro is not a replacement for healthy habits. It is prescribed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.2

03 · Decision factors

What to weigh up

Consider your starting point, health conditions, past attempts, budget and tolerance of side effects. The licensed route needs a consultation; ours is free and reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. For a related comparison, see Mounjaro vs exercise.

04 · What the trials show

What the trial evidence shows

In SURMOUNT-1, 2,539 adults on tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages; individual results vary.2

At 72 weeks, 85% on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of body weight.2 For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. See Mounjaro predicted weight loss.

05 · Is there a natural equivalent?

Is there a natural equivalent to Mounjaro?

No. "Natural GLP-1" supplements such as berberine are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. Dosing is not standardised, and they carry no clinical oversight.

Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, helping regulate appetite and slow stomach emptying.1 Nothing sold as a "natural Mounjaro" or "poor man's Ozempic" replicates that. Compare natural alternatives to weight loss injections.

06 · Other licensed options

Other licensed options

Mounjaro and Wegovy are the licensed weight-management injections. In the SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head trial, tirzepatide averaged 20.2% weight loss over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg.15 Both are effective; which suits you depends on your health profile and prescriber advice.

Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are now licensed GLP-1 tablets; orlistat is a tablet that blocks some dietary fat absorption and produces smaller average losses. There is no tablet form of Mounjaro. See the Wegovy pen, Duromine vs Mounjaro and Mounjaro vs Rybelsus.

07 · Safety and access

Safety and NHS access

Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed research peptides such as retatrutide, or compounded copies; these have no safety data and no regulated supply chain.

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.4 Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is there a natural equivalent to Mounjaro?
No. Supplements such as berberine are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a licensed injection that activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Anything marketed as a natural version should be treated with caution.
Is anything better than Mounjaro for weight loss?
In the SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head trial, tirzepatide averaged 20.2% weight loss versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy) over 72 weeks. Both are effective licensed treatments, and the right one depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice.
What is known as the "poor man's Ozempic"?
The phrase is a marketing label for low-cost supplements such as berberine. They are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. Ozempic itself is licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss.
Who should not take Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly; it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive.
What should I avoid while taking Mounjaro?
Avoid running it alongside other GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed research peptides such as retatrutide, or compounded copies, as these have no safety data. It works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased activity. Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptoms. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.
How long do people typically take Mounjaro?
It varies, and your prescriber reviews this with you. Trials ran for 72 weeks, and the SURMOUNT-4 study looked at continued treatment for maintenance. After a final dose, tirzepatide takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system.
What else is Mounjaro good for besides weight loss?
In the UK, Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. Ask your prescriber what is appropriate for you.
Can I combine Mounjaro with natural supplements?
Tell your prescriber about any supplement you take before starting. Supplements are not a substitute for treatment, and dosing is not standardised. Never combine Mounjaro with other GLP-1 products or unlicensed peptides.
